Grain elevator collapses after catching fire in Sangamon County PHOTO: A grain elevator has collapsed after catching fire in Sangamon County, firefighters said. The Springfield Firefighters Local 37 union said on Facebook the fire happened in the 4400 block of W. Jefferson St. in Bradfordton, which is just west of Springfield. A caller reported a fire on the top floor of a grain elevator. Crews reported the structure was collapsing at about 3:45 p.m. Friday. Multiple power lines were down in the area. Responders wanted multiple tankers to be dispatched. At about 3:50 p.m., the union said an engine would start to attack a building next door that was about to ignite. At 4 p.m., crews said the building was fully involved and multiple hand lines and ladder trucks were in use. Crews were establishing a water shuttle at that time. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR 2 Chicago firefighters injured while battling flames in Morgan Park VIDEO: Two Chicago firefighters suffered minor back injuries at the scene of a garage fire in the Morgan Park neighborhood. Officials said debris fell on them while fighting a fire on South Peoria Street early Monday morning. However, both firefighters are hospitalized in fair conditions at Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park. The fire on the South Side does not appear to be arson, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Chicago Fire Department said. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Largest firehouse in Chicago history opens for service on Far South Side The largest firehouse in Chicago history — and the first new multi-apparatus facility in decades on the Far South Side — opened for service Wednesday despite Mayor Lori Lightfoot's once-bitter feud with the local alderman. The $30 million, 27,000-square-foot firehouse at 1024 W. 119th St. that will serve as the new headquarters for Engine Co. 115 is a personal and very emotional triumph for Ald. Carrie Austin (34th). She has campaigned for a new firehouse for 16 years and feared that Lightfoot's election might bring that crusade to a dead-end. After all, Lightfoot dumped Austin as chairman of the City Council's Budget Committee in retaliation for Austin's decision to support Toni Preckwinkle in the 2019 mayoral runoff. "When our mayor came into office, I was the first one [to start begging], ‘Ma'am, please don't let my fire station go to waste.' She did not. She had just as much compassion … for this station to be a reality," Austin said. CHICAGO SUN-TIMES Chicago: More arsons reported in Hegewisch neighborhood after fires destroy several garages over weekend VIDEO: Chicago firefighters were called out to more burning garages in the Hegewisch neighborhood Monday morning and police said arson is to blame. Neighbors said they feel like they are being terrorized after several apparent arsons occurred on Saturday and an additional string of fires Monday morning. Firefighters chased the latest fires at 13512 S. Buffalo Ave. at about 12:06 a.m., destroying a garage, damaging multiple others along with electrical and cable supply lines. This adds to the list of fires from over the weekend in the same area. The entire back alley near 133rd Street between Burley and Buffalo avenues was engulfed in flames on Saturday night. The fire spread to at least five garages, destroying a lot of property in its path. Police said someone intentionally set fire to these the cans in the back alleyway. "Fires set in 45 minutes. They just drove through and set all the trash cans on fire," said resident Torence Ake. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Fires temporarily close two Champaign restaurants Two Champaign barbecue restaurants were both forced to close this weekend after fires in the flues of their equipment. Just before 6 a.m. Saturday, Champaign firefighters were called to Li'l Porgy's, 1917 W. Springfield Ave., after passersby reported seeing flames both inside the restaurant and coming from the flue of the smoker pit. Fire department spokesman Randy Smith said firefighters found a fire in the commercial cooking pit that extended to the roof from the exhaust flue. He said even though they got the flames out quickly, there was smoke and fire damage in the kitchen and moderate smoke throughout the business. That meant the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District had to be notified and will have to inspect the business before it can reopen. Smith was unable to estimate how long cleanup and repair would take. Firefighters broke out the front windows to vent smoke. CHAMPAIGN NEWS-GAZETTE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

2 Firefighters Trapped, Seriously Hurt in Destructive New York Business Fire VIDEO: A destructive four-alarm fire left a row of Queens businesses badly damaged and two firefighters with serious injuries by the time officials got the blaze under control. The commercial fire started on Springfield Boulevard in Queens Village early Saturday morning, prompting the response of dozens and then eventually hundreds of firefighters. FDNY Assistant Chief of Department Joseph Jardin said investigators believe the fire started around 2 a.m. in the center structure of three commercial businesses. The fire had quickly moved into the roof of the structure and extended to the cockloft, the space in the building between the ceiling and the underside of the roof level, causing the fire to easily spread between the businesses. "They were operating about ten foot inside the rear of the building when a portion of the root collapsed, trapping two of our members initially," Jardin said. One of the firefighters was briefly trapped under a 20x20 foot section of roof, he said. The next few days are a blank for a Green Township firefighter who was poisoned with cyanide while fighting a fire in Alpena County two weeks ago. Matt Cohoon, the 37-year-old chief of the Green Township Fire Department, was a mystery to doctors when he showed up at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena on March 16. A blood test revealed he had cyanide poisoning — a complication sometimes faced by firefighters as they work in the black smoke produced by burning plastics and other household products. His health future is uncertain, and the poisonous gas has taken pieces of his memory. Still, Cohoon said, it's all just part of the job of a firefighter. His colleagues knew something was wrong as Cohoon slumped outside the burned home on M-32. "It went from bad to worse real fast," said Assistant Chief Tim Wade, who was at the fire. THE ALPENA NEWS Idaho first responders reflect on their involvement in rescue that garnered worldwide attention VIDEO: In March, a truck carrying two people crashed on Interstate 84 near Malad Gorge State Park. The truck would up going over the edge of the interstate, where it was left suspended over the interstate's rail, kept above the gorge floor by only the chain connecting its trailer and the car's right front axle, which was perched on the interstate's ledge. KMVT was the only station on the scene as Southern Idaho's first responders sprung into action. The Magic Valley Special Operations Rescue Team successfully saved a couple and their two dogs from the vehicle. They were one of over 20 operations that responded. "We've dealt with multiple vehicles in the canyon," said Magic Valley Paramedics Special Operations Supervisor Chad Smith. "The car hanging off the bridge was a definite first for us, though." They stressed every second counted, so being quick to act was a priority. KMVT-TV CBS 11 TWIN FALLS When the next flood emergency happens in Louisiana, this new boat will come to the rescue PHOTOS: For an hour midday Thursday, the pond behind Bass Pro Shops was the safest body of water in Denham Springs. Anyone who might have been unlucky enough to find themselves in distress in the water would have quickly been pulled aboard a brand new, bright red rescue boat Livingston Parish Fire Protection District No. 5 was testing on the lake. The polymer boat, filled with foam and fitted with a 50 horsepower engine, will soon patrol the Amite River and conduct water rescues on the popular tubing destination. "This boat is pretty much unsinkable," Chief Joe Koczrowski said. "You can lay this boat almost on its side in the water. Plus, if we get, God forbid, another flood, we can use it during the flood." Koczrowski said his department made six rescues on the Amite River during the summer months last year, including a baby that wasn't breathing on the river and a woman who broke her leg. Lacking a dedicated boat, the department had to rely on the city of Central's rescue boat when responding to calls, he said. THE ADVOCATE - METERED SITE Alabama firefighter starts new business to connect with children, honor late mother VIDEO: A firefighter with the Birmingham Fire Department has started a new business with the hope of connecting with more kids in the community, a mission that was partly inspired by his late mother. James Patton's new business, Gamez on Fire, is a mobile gaming trailer that started a few months ago. It has just about every gaming system, including the new PlayStation. Up to 24 people can play in the trailer at once. Patton said that as a firefighter, he often sees kids on their worst days. Through Gamez on Fire, Patton has a chance to see them at their best. "Being able to see kids, and see kids at their best, it was like ‘This is it,'" Patton said. "I just have fun with them." Patton said he wants to use Gamez on Fire to talk with young people in the community about the work he does, all while having interactions outside of moments of crisis.
