Fire damages Quincy apartments A fire broke out in a Quincy apartment complex at 901 Lind St. Friday morning. Quincy Fire Chief Bernie Vahlkamp said crews were called to the Frederick Ball Apartments, operated by the Quincy Housing Authority, around 9 a.m. and had the fire knocked down by 9:30 a.m. Vahlkamp said two families will be displaced due to the heavy damage to the apartments and the Quincy Housing Authority is looking to find them a place to stay. Vahlkamp said the apartments would be salvageable. Investigators reported Friday afternoon the fire was caused by children playing with a lighter. No injuries were reported. WGEM-TV NBC/CW+/FOX 10 QUINCY Cause of Mattoon fire under investigation The cause of a structure fire Saturday is under investigation. Mattoon Fire Chief Jeff Hilligoss said in a news release that firefighters were dispatched at 8:11 p.m. to the area of 33rd Street and Marshall Avenue to a report of smoke and flames coming from a structure. Crews arrived at 607 S. 33rd St. to find smoke coming from the home and immediately deployed a hose line and began an aggressive interior attack while another crew began searching the residence for any occupants, Hilligoss said. The fire was quickly knocked down and under control within 10 minutes. The search of the residence found no occupants inside. There were no injuries reported. Hilligoss said the home sustained significant heat, smoke, and water damage, and is considered uninhabitable. MATTOON JOURNAL GAZETTE & TIMES-COURIER - METERED SITE Nine Illinois fire departments get state equipment grant The Illinois State Fire Marshal has awarded nine Tri-State fire departments grants to help them cover certain costs. Worth up to $26,000, the grants are meant to help departments purchase small firefighting and ambulance equipment. Two of the departments to get grants were the Ursa and Loraine Fire Protection Districts. Loraine volunteer firefighter Brent Clair said grants are a vital source of funding for their department. He said their budget can range between $25,000 to $30,000, much of which goes to cover fuel, equipment and insurance costs. He said the extra $26,000 they are getting will help make sure their 18 firefighters have the equipment they need. "They are specifically for small equipment, which can be anywhere from turnout gear to radios to SCBAs," he said. WGEM-TV NBC/CW+/FOX 10 QUINCY PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Heavy flames engulf resort hotel in Texas A resort at Possum Kingdom Lake in the western area of North Texas was engulfed in heavy flames in the overnight hours. The fire happened at The Cliffs Resort in Palo Pinto County. The Lake Palo Pinto Volunteer Fire Department posted pictures of crews working the early Sunday fire on Facebook. The volunteer department said crews from throughout Palo Pinto County helped put out the flames. Pictures from the volunteer department showed crews using water from the lake to help with the blaze. Lita Giddings, a witness who captured video of the flames, told WFAA that at around 2:20 a.m. a hotel worker "ran the halls banging on everyone's door shouting 'fire' in all 3 buildings and got everyone out safely." The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Arizona researchers believe changes in how firefighters' genes work may increase their risk for cancer VIDEO: Cancer is the leading cause of death among firefighters, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, a team of Arizona researchers believes it might be because each fire they fight is changing how their genes work, making them more susceptible to cancer and other diseases. While in the community, firefighters fight fires every day, it's alongside one another they're fighting something much harder. "Each fire station in the State of Arizona, someone knows someone who just got diagnosed with cancer," Bryan Jeffries, President of the Professional Firefighters of Arizona said. Jeffries was one of those diagnosed in 2019. "Not long ago I was in chemotherapy, I was fighting for my life because I came down with the number one cancer firefighters get, which is seminoma," Jeffries said. KPNX-TV NBC 12 PHOENIX Sunday marked 3 years since deadly gas explosion in North Carolina VIDEO/PHOTOS: Sunday marked three years since a deadly natural gas explosion killed two people and injured two dozen others west of downtown Durham. A contractor installing underground cables struck a gas line outside the Kaffeinate coffee shop on North Duke Street on April 10, 2019. The Durham Fire Department made an Instagram post Sunday about the explosion: "What started out as a typical sunny spring day quickly turned into the day this community would never forget. Courageous efforts were displayed by all of the emergency service and utility company personnel on scene. Tragically lives were lost and life changing physical and psychological injuries were had. But in true Bull City fashion we grew stronger, closer, and more prideful of this great community. Pour one out for this day and say a prayer for those who perished, may they continue to Rest In Peace." WRAL-TV NBC 5 RALEIGH Crowd runs from manhole explosion in New York City's Times Square Video from Times Square's EarthCam showed panicked people running away from a loud bang Sunday night. Con Edison confirmed later that the sound was a manhole explosion. The explosion was due to cable failure. FDNY officials told PIX11 News there were three manholes on fire after the incident. The fires started about 6:47 p.m. Elevated carbon monoxide levels were found at 229 West 43rd Street, and firefighters mitigated the location's basement and sub-basement. Fire operations officially stopped about 8:55 p.m., officials said. One Twitter user took footage of people running away after the initial bang and shared it with PIX11 News. No injuries were reported. "At this time, there have been no customer outages, and no reports of injuries or property damage," Con Edison said. "Our crews remain on location." WPIX-TV CW 11 NEW YORK California firefighter leads mission to help search and rescue efforts in Ukraine VIDEO: Right now a team of first responders is on their way to help with the search and rescue efforts in Ukraine. One of them is a firefighter from San Diego County who helped make the mission possible. "It's to help our fellow firefighters over there. That's what this is all about," said Eric Hille, an engineer with San Miguel Fire Rescue. Since the war began, the House of Ukraine has received tons of donations from medical equipment and military gear to clothes and diapers, but not much has been for Ukrainian firefighters. That's where Hille saw a chance to help. "These are people that are on the frontlines that could have fled and they didn't. They still stayed and kept their oath to protect their cities but nobody was sending them anything so that's how this mission got started," he said. KGTV ABC 10 SAN DIEGO PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
