A 10-year-old child remains hospitalized after a boat fire in Fox Lake that injured three other family members Sunday. The fire occurred just before 3 p.m. on Pistakee Lake in Fox Lake. Officials said when first responders arrived, the boat was engulfed in flames. A mother, father, and two children jumped into the water when the fire broke out. The adults and one child were treated for minor burns there at the scene. A child under the age of 10 was taken to the hospital with serious burns. The fire department put out the fire on the boat as it sank, from taking on so much water. Crews dragged the charred wreckage to shore. Firefighters said the conditions on the lake created many challenges. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO The Chicago Fire Department Foundation is teaming up with local food pantries to get working smoke detectors to people who need them. The National Fire Protection Association found the risk of dying in a home fire is significantly higher when there are no smoke alarms or they don't work. "The working smoke alarm is absolutely critical," Chris Hasbrook, the co-founder of the Chicago Fire Department Foundation, said. The program launched two years ago and is now working with eight local food pantries to get more smoke detectors in homes. "Part of our mission is to educate and help serve the needs of fire safety in Chicago and we've bene working to find partners to donate smoke alarms," Hasbrook said. "They know the need of the people who need smoke alarms and need that kind of help." WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO VIDEO: The DeKalb Fire Department invited the community to the dedication of the newest City of DeKalb fire engine. The new engine is a 2022 Rosenbauer and will replace Engine 2 at Station 2. Fire Chief Mike Thomas addressed the crowd at the event, saying, "So there's a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes to get this engine in service. We're able to uplift this engine with new battery operated extrication equipment, and a large port a tank to prepare us for Rural Fire Operations and among many other upgrades and tools and equipment. So I'd like to acknowledge the spec committee for all their hard work and planning the mechanics team for putting this together once we received it. WREX-TV NBC 13 ROCKFORD |

An explosion and fire at a Sherwin-Williams paint factory in Garland injured one employee and shut the facility down Monday morning, company officials said in a statement. The explosion happened around 1:15 a.m. Monday at the company's plant at South Shiloh Road and Forest Lane in Garland, according to the statement. The plant produces industrial coatings and resins for Sherwin-Williams. One employee suffered a minor injury and was taken to a hospital for treatment, according to Sherwin-Williams. The employee has since been released. No other injuries were reported and all employees were accounted for, the company said. Fire crews responded and put the fire out after battling large flames and heavy smoke for several hours. Garland police closed multiple roadways around the plant while officials worked to put out the fire. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS VIDEO: In an emergency, we expect our first responders to be prepared for anything, but that comes with practice, which is exactly what Collier EMS is getting at Naples Community Hospital. Training in NCH's new state of the art simulation center helps crews prepare for the unexpected. "Yes, this high intensity, low frequency occurrences, high intensity meaning catastrophic results if you don't figure out what's going on and low frequency meaning, I may not see one of these my whole career," said Dr. Robert Tober, medical director, Collier EMS. Tober is medical director for Collier's EMS. Working on ultra-life-like models gives crews a hands-on experience they wouldn't get anywhere else in Southwest Florida. "It gives them a chance to practice something like opening up somebody's neck to create an airway, sort of like a tracheostomy," Tober said. WINK-TV CBS 11 FORT MYERS Just over one year after a 7-year-old girl died in an Albertville house fire, one volunteer fire chief's mission sparked by her death has put life-saving equipment in the hands of firefighters. Now, Alder Springs Volunteer Fire Department Chief James Edwards said his mission, Project Charlie, has been accomplished. On July 13, 2022, Edwards said the department was called out to a house fire at the intersection of Campbell Road and Todd Ridge Road around 11 p.m. Charlie's twin sister, Willa, had been rescued by a teenager, Edwards recalled, and firefighters were able to find her grandfather Leon in a bedroom before pulling him out to safety. They couldn't find Charlie, however, until one of the firefighters found her in a bathroom by herself. Despite first responders giving everything they had, Edwards said, it was too late. WHNT-TV CBS 19 HUNTSVILLE VIDEO: The City and Borough of Juneau issued a declaration of emergency on Sunday following a glacial lake outburst flooding event that swelled waters to record levels. At least two structures were swept up into rushing waters and other structures were evacuated on Saturday after the flooding event filled Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall River to dangerously high levels. According to CBJ, the Mendenhall River banks "remain highly unstable." "At this time, the Mendenhall River banks remain highly unstable. All members of the public are strongly advised to stay away from the river to ensure safety and avoid obstructing response efforts," CBJ wrote in a release. According to the National Weather Service, river waters reached a record-high of 14.97 feet on Saturday night, much higher than the previous high water mark of 11.99 feet from 2016.
