| Chicago firefighter critically injured at house fire recovering at hospital VIDEO: A Chicago firefighter who was seriously injured in a house fire Friday near O'Hare Airport continues to recover at a hospital. The Chicago Fire Department provided an update Sunday on social media. CFD spokesman Larry Langford said Friday that one firefighter was transported to a hospital in critical condition and two others were in fair condition. Two of the firefighters were in the basement of the home, including the most seriously injured, but it was not clear if they went down there or fell through the floor. Langford said the more seriously injured firefighter was transferred to Loyola Medical Center for further treatment where he is listed in serious condition. CFD has not identified him by name, but said he's a longtime firefighter who has been with the department since the 1990s. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Peoria apartment complex fire displaces one One person is displaced after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Peoria around 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Battalion Chief Tom Sander said the Peoria Fire Department responded to 4233 N. Knollridge Road after a call of smoke in the building. As crews arrived on the scene, firefighters saw heavy smoke showing on all floors of the three-story building and called it a working fire. Crews then began to search the building and assisted in evacuating five residents who were found inside their apartments. Sander said two residents on the third floor were assisted down by a ladder and another resident, whose unit was on fire, had escaped out of a window. | VIDEO: 5 dead, several hurt in Pennsylvania house explosion Five people were killed and several others injured in a house explosion Saturday in Plum, a suburb of Pittsburgh. The explosion destroyed three structures and damaged at least a dozen others, authorities said. A person who was initially unaccounted for after the explosion was among the five dead, officials said Sunday. Police have not yet publicly identified the victims, but officials said one of the victims was an adolescent. A little before 10:30 a.m. Eastern time Saturday, 911 dispatchers received a call that multiple houses were on fire due to an explosion. Responding officers and firefighters arrived to find "people trapped under the debris," Allegheny County officials reported. Four people were initially confirmed dead in the incident, Allegheny County officials reported on social media. The fifth fatality was confirmed during a Sunday press conference. CBS NEWS Former Massachusetts fire chief's invention changed firefighting in early 1900s PHOTOS: New Bedford Fire Chief Edward F. Dahill changed the way firefighters fight fires. Dahill dedicated 59 years of service to the department from 1888 to 1947, and left behind an invention that made an extremely difficult job less difficult for all firefighters. He invented the first aerial ladder hoist, called the Dahill hoist, in 1902. Larry Roy, director of the New Bedford Fire Museum, said Dahill's invention really made a difference when it came to firefighting and helped save time and save lives. Before Dahill's invention, firefighters had to manually raise the ladder out of the bed of the fire truck. Born in New Bedford in 1862, Edward F. Dahill joined the New Bedford Fire Department in 1888 when he was 26 years old. He served as chief of the department from 1904 to 1947. He left his job as chief at age 85 due to mandatory retirement. NEW BEDFORD STANDARD-TIMES (SOUTH COAST TIMES) - METERED SITE Driver of stolen truck switches to stolen ambulance, hitting multiple cars on chase from Virginia to DC, police say VIDEOS: A Maryland man led police on a wild chase from behind the wheel of two different trucks and then a stolen ambulance Saturday afternoon, striking multiple vehicles across three different highways, police said. The suspect caused a multi-car crash on I-395 in a stolen truck before stealing an ambulance that was responding to the scene. While in the stolen ambulance, he struck at least 13 other vehicles, and rammed a state trooper's cruiser, authorities say. The chase zipped from I-66 to I-395 to the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Virginia and then back onto I-395 and into the District, where the driver was arrested after a final head-on crash. Virginia state police identified the suspect as Darell T. Caldwell, 30, of Brandywine, Maryland.
