Man killed, woman flown to burn center after house explosion in Wabash County On Friday evening, two people were flown to a Louisville burn center after a home just north of Allendale was destroyed in a possible explosion. According to law enforcement, the two injured people were the only occupants. Wabash County Sheriff Derek Morgan identified the two as Kevin and Sue Murphy. He said Kevin has died, and Sue is in the ICU. He said when he arrived on scene, the home was engulfed in flames. "The structure itself was still standing, but [the fire] was rapidly increasing," Sheriff Morgan said. He said they quickly learned that the two people were rescued before they arrived on scene. "Some neighbors helped out and got both occupants out of the house," Sheriff Morgan said. "And we got EMS here, and they've both been flown out of here tonight." He said the two victims were talking and alert as they were being transported. Dominic J. Saviano, Jr. (aka Sam), was born July 3, 1933 in Chicago to Dominick and Lucile Saviano. He died Monday, Aug. 8 at home surrounded by family. Saviano, Jr. served as a corporal in the United States Army from 1953-55 and was stationed in Germany. Following his return to the United States, he worked as a bricklayer. He landed a job with the Buffalo Grove Fire Dept., where he remained for over 30 years, retiring as the department's deputy fire marshal in 1995. Saviano, Jr. was one of the original five volunteer members of the fire department. When he moved to Buffalo Grove in 1958, there were only 708 residents in the village. On Dec. 1, 1972, he became one of the first 107 trained paramedics in the United States. At 8:15 a.m. that same day, he and other Buffalo Grove paramedics saved the life of someone who went into cardiac arrest. Set to meet Monday, the city council will learn more about three options — defined as essential, enhanced and amplified — for replacing two fire stations at 1407 N. Lincoln Ave. and 2103 S. Philo Road. The projected price range for each version varies by millions of dollars, and representatives from the city's consultant on this project, FGMA Architects, will be on hand to help explain the differences, according to fire Chief Demond Dade. Explosion after explosion: Massive fire at Massachusetts boat yard destroys buildings, cars, boats Crews battled a massive fire Friday afternoon that has destroyed buildings, cars and vessels at a boat yard in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. At least one person was hurt and an unknown number of firefighters suffered minor injuries, officials said. The fire broke out at about 2 p.m. Friday at the Mattapoisett Boatyard on Ned's Point. The brother of an employee and witnesses told WCVB there was a series of explosions before the flames and black smoke consumed the entire property. "All of a sudden, black smoke. Thick, thick, thick black smoke. So, we sat there for a while, and we just kept hearing bangs — explosion after explosion. I mean, in an hour, there had to have been 50 explosions just going off and off," said one witness. When Sky 5 arrived over the scene, multiple buildings, several boats and about two dozen cars were in flames or burned-out shells. His disability doesn't stop him from achieving that dream, or helping his community. "I love this fire department, I love Milledgeville, I love both the county and the community," he said. He also said he's the fire department's biggest fan, and he his love for it comes from his dad. "He was a firefighter from Dekalb county from 1966 all through 1997," Mitchem said. Garry wants to follow in his dad's footsteps, but in the mean time he spends his time listening to the fire department scanner. "Every time there is an accident or a fire, I post online to let the community know when a call comes out for an accident or a structure fire, or any type of fire," Mitchem said. That was the journey for one history-making group of city teens this summer. The inaugural class of the Trenton Junior Public Safety Academy learned firsthand that being a first-responder means hard work and dedication even just to learn the skills needed for the job. Created by Fire Director Kenneth Douglas and lead instructor Brian Roberts, the Trenton Fire Department set out to make a program that pushes kids past their comfort zones but also gives them skills and experience that can benefit them long after the summer program ends. "He didn't just want to run a summer camp, he wanted it to be a Junior Public Safety Academy," Roberts told The Trentonian. "The kids come in here and they learn, but they also have a good time in the summertime." TRENTONIAN New Mexico State Police chase stolen fire truck VIDEO: A fire truck was stolen earlier this week in Corrales. Now, New Mexico State Police has shared video of the chase and the arrest that followed. Video posted by state police on Facebook shows the stolen fire truck heading west on I-40, a short time after it was stolen while responding to a medical call. Corrales fire officials were worried. "We were very concerned for the safety of people, and its lights and sirens are going," said Tanya Lattin with the Corrales Fire Department. "We were very concerned about the possibility it might try to drive down the wrong side of the road." More than an hour west of Albuquerque, Laguna police deployed stop strips and finally got the driver to pull over into a gas station parking lot.
