4 women hurt after car hits freight train; 2 extricated with jaws of life, Harvey FD says VIDEO: Four women were hurt in an early morning crash Saturday between a car and a CSX freight train in south suburban Harvey. It happened at about 1:50 a.m. at the Wood Street crossing at 147th Street, according to CSX. Four young women were inside the car when it was struck by an oncoming train, according to Harvey Fire Department Captain Steve Gorman. The details of the crash are not yet known but firefighters were forced to extricate two of the victims from the vehicle using the jaws of life. Three of the women were transported to area hospitals and one refused treatment, Gorman said. At least one of the victims is listed in critical condition at Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn. The Dixmoor Police Department assisted with the crash. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Rockford plans to build $1M emergency operations center When a major storm, catastrophic fire or disaster strikes, Rockford Fire Department personnel roll carts of computers, phones and other equipment into a classroom at fire headquarters. About 30 minutes later, the classroom is transformed into an emergency operations center where the response of dozens, if not hundreds, of first responders can be coordinated. That cumbersome procedure could finally change this year, Rockford Fire Chief Michele Pankow said. "We literally roll the carts down the hallway, bring them into the EOC and get everything hooked up," Pankow said. "IT comes over, they help us get that up and running." Using a $1 million grant secured by U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth more than a year ago, plans are to build a dedicated and permanent emergency operations center on the first floor of Rockford Fire Department headquarters, 204 S. Wyoming-Speer Fire Department treated about 30 locals to breakfast Sunday morning. The department hosted a breakfast consisting of pancakes, eggs, and sausage. They also held a fundraiser, raffling off a TV and $500 gift cards. Fire Chief Joe Charvat said it's important to hold events for the community to interact with first responders. "We get to see what we have and see what they, you know, the taxes and stuff they got to pay and help and see what their money pays for and invest and what we use it for," said Charvet. "So it's a good thing they come out, they can see what we have and meet the people and get some delicious breakfast while they're at it." All the money raised goes back into the fire department to help pay for tools and equipment. WHOI-TV ABC 19 PEORIA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Fire leaves Pennsylvania home 'completely destroyed,' homeowner hospitalized Massive flames were seen shooting out of every window of a home on Second Street in Brownsville. Captured video shows heavy black smoke and the intensity of that fire just minutes after it started. "The house of origin was completely destroyed. The alpha and delta side exposures both suffered heavy damage," said Ron Barry, South Brownsville Fire Chief. Chief Barry says flames spread to two homes on each side, and freezing weather conditions made it difficult to put out. "One of the hydrants was frozen up. It took a few minutes to get the water flowing. That was an issue because of the cold weather." The fire chief says the homeowner was able to make it out alive but was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment. One firefighter was also evaluated on scene after possibly being electrocuted. KDKA-TV CBS 2 PITTSBURGH ‘It's been a challenging road': A year after mass shooting, California fire chief reflects Through most of his career, Monterey Park Fire Chief Matthew Hallock would absorb the news of mass shootings with the discerning eye of a first responder, but with understandable detachment. His department trained. He cared. His instinct was to think "what if it happened here." But year after year, shooting after shooting, they never did. Small suburban L.A. town. Tight-knit, peaceful community. That nightmare could not possibly come to Monterey Park. And then, on a celebratory evening in his city, the dispatch came: "It happened," he said. 10:20 p.m., Jan. 21, 2023. Star Ballroom Dance Studio on Garvey Avenue. Mass shooter. Multiple casualties. Hallock's small department of firefighters and paramedics — on the first night of a 48-hour shift — would respond to a scene that up until then was the kind that only happened in other places. PASADENA STAR-NEWS - METERED SITE Boy burned from TikTok challenge becomes friends with North Carolina firefighters who saved him VIDEO: A 10-year-old boy turned tragedy into triumph after a TikTok challenge left him with devastating burns. Channel 9's Almiya White spoke with the boy who formed an extraordinary bond with the firefighters who came to his rescue. Charlotte Fire Captain Garry Barham said the fire started with a social media challenge. "He was doing a TikTok trend with rubbing alcohol and an ignition source which was a lighter," Barham said. "And it exploded." While he recovers from the second-degree burns at a burn center in Winston-Salem, Jared Pacas sent the Charlotte Fire Department a special video message, thanking them for saving him and his family from his mistake. And the firefighters at Charlotte Firehouse 40 were glad to hear from him. WSOC-TV ABC 9 CHARLOTTE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
