MCDONOUGH COUNTY VOICE Community remembers Peoria fire hero Butch Gudat Firefighters and families gathered Sunday at the Lutheran cemetery in Peoria to remember local hero, Captain Vernon "Butch" Gudat. Gudat lost his life in 1983 after a wall collapsed on him while fighting a fire on Peoria's Main St. "He was a smart firefighter, he was an aggressive firefighter," Division Chief of Operations Rick Morgan said. "He was not only a great firefighter, he was a family guy." Morgan said in this final moments, Gudat saved the life of a fellow firefighter, Mike Morrow. Members of the department, even those who never met Butch, said his legacy still echoed in the department. "For those who don't know, who weren't around, who weren't born he is with us every day because we have a plaque of Mr. Gudat throughout all the firehouses," Morgan said. WEEK-TV NBC 25 PEORIA Chicago Fire Department battles large residential fire in Back of the Yards VIDEO: The Chicago Fire Department battled a large residential fire Friday evening in Back of the Yards. At around 4:45 p.m., CFD was dispatched to the 940 block of West Garfield on the report of a residential fire. It was upgraded to a still-and-box alarm and flames were visible for roughly 20 minutes as SkyCam9 was overhead. At one point, multiple firefighters were very close to shooting flames on the roof. The fire was extinguished at around 5:20 p.m. No injuries were reported. WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO Fire displaces tenants from 4 apartments in Rantoul A smoldering cigarette in a trash can is being blamed for a Saturday evening fire that caused an estimated $500,000 damage to a Rantoul apartment building. Fire Chief Ken Waters said all of the tenants in the four apartments at 112 W. Letchworth St., on the village's northwest side, escaped safely. No injuries were reported. Waters said flames and heavy smoke were showing from the northwest corner of the two-story frame building when firefighters arrived. They received the call at 6:56 p.m. "It was not an easy fire to fight," Waters said, noting that trees, power lines and cable lines prevented easy access to the fire with the department's ladder truck. CHAMPAIGN NEWS-GAZETTE Pekin Fire Department to receive new engine, radios thanks to grant New equipment is coming to the Pekin Fire Department courtesy of a grant program. The city approved the purchase of a new fire engine and adios for the department, thanks to the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program and Section 108 Loan Guarantee Program. The department received federal funding totaling $136,363 for the purchase of radio equipment to be used with the county-wide radio system being implemented in Tazewell County. "Communication is key to keeping our responders safe," said Deputy Chief of Pekin Fire, Tony Rendleman. "All Tazewell County agencies will not only be able to talk to each other for the first time, but also will be able to communicate with agencies across the river. This is an important development given the current state of police, fire, and EMS services." Crews work to put out massive fire at abandoned Georgia condominiums known for trouble VIDEO: DeKalb County fire crews have been working to put out a massive fire at an abandoned condominium building in Clarkston Monday morning. At around 7 a.m., 11Alive SkyTracker showed flames shooting through the roof with the entire building engulfed. Within 40 minutes, most of the larger flames were out and all that was left was an exterior wall. The building, known as Brannon Hill Condominiums, are located off Old Hampton Drive. They have long been considered an eyesore and a danger to the people living in it, sometimes described as the "worst community in America." DeKalb County has worked for years to demolish the blighted property. Some buildings have been torn down, but others are still occupied and some are abandoned. WXIA-TV NBC 11 ATLANTA Retiring FDNY commissioner led COVID response, 9/11 recovery New York City's fire commissioner said Friday that he will retire next month after more than seven years in the job and a career that spanned more than five decades and included stints in every rank in the department. Daniel Nigro led the nation's largest municipal fire department through the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic and recently oversaw its response to the city's deadliest fire in three decades. With the FDNY's ranks decimated by the deaths of 343 firefighters and fire officials in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Nigro received a battlefield promotion to chief of department. He led rescue and recovery operations at ground zero and helped the department rebuild. Nigro, one of the few holdovers from former Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration, will leave Feb. 16. BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE South Carolina firefighter cheered on by daycare kids during training session VIDEO/PHOTOS: A Mount Pleasant firefighter had his own cheering section while undergoing training! WCIV-TV ABC 36 CHARLESTON Pioneering Minnesota firefighter credits family of firsts to lots of hard work In 2005, the film "Animal" starring Ving Rhames as Animal and Terrence Howard as his son Darius was released. Darius fell into gang life while his father was incarcerated as if to carry on the family tradition. This movie displayed how without proper guidance from the parent, or willingness to obtain an education, the cycle of poverty and social disenfranchisement will continue. The Black community is especially vulnerable to this generational cycle of dysfunction. "You only do what you see," said Darick Rhodes, a prominent 20-year veteran firefighter, chief and captain for the Bloomington Fire Department who recently retired. The Minneapolis native, raised on Chicago and Franklin avenues, actually had another career in mind before becoming a firefighter. His first career choice was to join law enforcement like other members of his family.
