1 found dead after West Chicago house fire, police say VIDEO: One person was found dead after a fire early Saturday morning in West Chicago, police said. Police said just before 2 a.m. that streets in the 2300-block of Barnhart Street in the Cornerstone Lakes subdivision were closed, as West Chicago fire crews responded to a structure fire. Later Saturday morning, fire crews found a "deceased victim" inside the home, police said. The person has not yet been identified, pending notification of next of kin. Parts of Barnhart Street and Bainbridge Boulevard remained closed, as officials investigate. The public is asked to avoid the area. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Chicago firefighters killed in massive 1985 blaze honored with renovated mural VIDEO: Gone, but not forgotten. Heroes of the Chicago Fire Department were killed in a massive fire on Milwaukee Avenue in February 1985. On Sunday, their community gave back, remembering their sacrifice. Captain Daniel Nockels and Firefighters Michael Forchione and Michael Talley were honored with a renovated mural at a park at Diversey, Kimball, and Milwaukee avenues, just down the street from where the deadly fire broke out. "Thirty-eight years, five months, eight days. For those of us who survived the tragedy of that frigid cold night, the space of time is hard to comprehend," said Firefighter Paul Nockels, the son of Daniel Nockels. "I miss my father every day." The original mural was painted in the mid-1980s and retouched in the early 2000s. South Shore artist Damon Lamar Reed was commissioned for the new version. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Structure fire in West Virginia devastates multiple apartment units, displaces tenants PHOTOS: Multiple fire crews responded to a blaze in Putnam County early Sunday morning that caused extensive damage to an apartment complex, displacing residents. Emergency dispatchers reported the fire began shortly after 3 a.m. in the Devonshire apartment complex. Teays Valley Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Cody Smoot spoke with Eyewitness News on scene and reported residents were evacuated as firefighters worked to contain the flames. "When we arrived, as you can tell from the building, there was fire through the roof on that one corner of the building and it took quite a little bit to get enough crews here to extinguish the fire," Smoot said. Emergency crews said the fire damaged 22 units and 19 of those apartments affected were occupied. Initially, lightning is believed to be the cause of the blaze. State fire officials will investigate further. WCHS-TV ABC 8 CHARLESTON Chicago firefighters killed in massive 1985 Logan Square blaze honored with renovated mural VIDEO: Gone, but not forgotten. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Houston firefighters dealing with air conditioning issues at several fire stations VIDEO: The inside of Houston Fire Station 56 is hot. "We walked in and we were literally sweating," said Sandy Ditta. Sandy Ditta with Operation HFD Cookie Drop recently noticed just how hot it is after delivering cookies to the firefighters. She has been baking cookies for them for years to help boost their spirits. "They've been without AC for almost two months. They're called to a fire that is very hot and they come back and they have no relief," said Ditta. She said the station has eight makeshift cooling units that are working overtime, especially during record breaking heat. "They're set at 65, its 85 degrees in there. Some of the other rooms are hotter than that," said Ditta. According to HFD, five fire stations and three support facilities are currently having issues with air conditioning. HFD said Station 33 had a brand-new AC installed last week. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Oklahoma takes groundbreaking initiative to safeguard first responders and minimize pet shelter admissions Oklahoma Human Services is set to pioneer an unprecedented program that will revolutionize emergency response protocols by introducing an Animal Contingency Plan to all senior care and low-income housing properties. This groundbreaking initiative aims to prioritize the safety of first responders while simultaneously reducing the number of animals being sent to pet shelters. First responders, who fearlessly confront emergency situations, often encounter a unique challenge when faced with aggressive pets at the scene. These pets can pose a serious threat, attacking without warning or provocation, impeding the vital work of firefighters, police officers, and paramedics. The protective nature of pets toward their owners and territories further complicates the situation, hindering access for first responders. THE NORMAN TRANSCRIPT - METERED SITE Medications added to EMT kits to treat heat-related illnesses in one North Carolina city VIDEO: As the summer heat continues, the Fayetteville Fire Department says they're adding new medications to their emergency responder toolkits to help with heat-related health issues. The medications include albuterol, oral glucose, Benadryl and Tylenol. The meds treat conditions exacerbated by the heat including breathing issues, diabetic emergencies, allergic reactions, high fevers and other related illnesses. "We're hoping, worst case, we're going to increase the survivability of our community's experienced medical crises," said Fire Chief Mike Hill. "Best case, we just make them more comfortable...We hope that it will lead to even further enhancements in the future. Maybe some more drug therapies or more treatment protocols we can bring into our program." WTVD-TV ABC 11 DURHAM PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
