Highland Park fire chief, dispatcher describe response to mass shooting First responders in Highland Park have had little sleep since July 4, playing several key roles in the mass shooting response. "No firefighter or EMT thinks they're going to be a combat medic in a community like Highland Park," said Fire Chief Joe Schrage. "We didn't do it alone. The community was there with us." The chief says every firefighter, on duty and off, got to work, treating the injured. Their response was assisted by the team at Highland Park's 911 operations center, overseen by Brent Reynolds. He says it's a tough job on a typical day. But on July 4, the team fielded more than 400 calls in the first hour after the shooting, haunted by what they heard. "I hope nobody ever has to hear those calls," the Glenview Public Safety Dispatch Center head said. WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO 2 injured after chemical plant explosion in East St. Louis VIDEO: Two people are injured after a chemical plant exploded Sunday night in East St. Louis. The explosion happened at the Allnex chemical plant in the 2900 block of Missouri Avenue around 10 p.m. The fire could be seen coming out of the roof of the building and multiple fire alarms were still going off after 10:30. Officials told News 4, a tank inside of the plant exploded injuring two men. Both of the men, ages 28 to 32, were taken to the hospital. One was released but the other is suffering from a chemical burn on about 60 percent of his body. Firefighters said the explosion caused significant damage to the roof of the building. Fire crews have confirmed there was a chemical spill but it is unknown at the time what kind of chemical it is. Osha and the St. Clair Hazmat team were inspecting for hazards. News 4 will update the story when more information becomes available. KMOV-TV CBS 4 ST. LOUIS Fire at Olesen Plaza apartments in Rockford caused by ‘careless smoking' Nobody was hurt after a fire at Olesen Plaza apartments in downtown Rockford Friday. The Rockford Fire Department says it received a call at 4:40 p.m. originating from an occupant of the third floor of the high-rise apartment. Fire crews on the scene say callers also reported seeing water coming from under the door of apartment 306. Moderate smoke was coming from a third-story window on the south side of the building. Once firefighters got inside the building, they found a small fire that was extinguished by the building's sprinkler system. All occupants of the apartment building were accounted for and fire crews worked with Rockford Housing Authority members to evacuate water once the sprinkler system was shut down. RFD says the fire was accidentally caused by "careless smoking." WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD Dumpster fire breaks out at Champaign Central High School Firefighters were called to Champaign Central High School on Sunday to battle a fire that started in a dumpster next to the school. The fire started around 1 p.m. District employee Elizabeth Stegmaier said she was told that a group of contractors working on school renovations discovered the fire and attempted to put the fire out with extinguishers; those efforts did not succeed. The Champaign Fire Department was called and responding firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze using their regular hoses and an aerial hose apparatus on one of their engines. Firefighters told Stegmaier that the cause is unknown, as the dumpster was flooded by hose water. The school itself and a car parked near the dumpster were not damaged. VIDEO: Historic 338-year-old hotel in Massachusetts damaged in massive fire The historic Veranda House Hotel on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, was damaged Saturday after a huge blaze ripped through the building. Firefighters received a report that the hotel, which is more than 338 years old, was on fire early Saturday, the Nantucket Fire Department said in a news release. Fire officials rushed to help, entering the building without protective equipment, to ensure that no one was stranded in the inferno, the report said. Two people were found and guided out safely, the fire department said. All hotel guests were evacuated. The fire department reported that no civilians were injured in the fire. "The actions of the citizens and the Captain saved lives," the report said. As of 2:30 p.m. Saturday, firefighters continued to battle to flames. Two firefighters were taken to hospitals for suspected heat exhaustion, and another was transported for a back injury, the report said. Now those firefighters are greeted by a massive steel sculpture commemorating the work they do to protect the community. Local firefighter Brandon Russell collaborated with Laramie Public Art Coalition to create the sculpture, titled "The Vitruvian Firefighter." The large metal work is a nod to Leonardo da Vinci's famous drawing "The Vitruvian Man," said Laura Zorch McDermit, LPAC executive director. Da Vinci's original features a man with arms and legs spread with a circle drawn around the perimeter of his body. Similarly, "The Vitruvian Firefighter" features a firefighter in protective gear in the same pose. NEWS LETTER JOURNAL Reaching new heights: Ohio fire department drone offers life-saving technology at feed mill fire A quick decision to break out a new drone may have saved a life at a June 17 fire scene. Scott Wolfe was out to dinner with his family that Friday when he got a call about a fire at the MARS Horsecare facility in Dalton. Crews from multiple departments responded. A drone with thermal imaging technology the Wooster Township Fire Department had acquired just days earlier was about to be thrust into service for the first time, and Wolfe was the only one on staff qualified to operate it. Dinner would have to wait. Wolfe, a volunteer water rescue team diver for the department and certified drone pilot, raced out after swinging by the station to pick up the drone and put it through a quick test run. The DJI M30T is one of the newest drones on the market, said Wolfe. It's ready to fly within 30 seconds of being turned on and can soar as high as 400 feet within 20 seconds. THE DAILY RECORD - METERED SITE Park outdoors: Ford expands recall for possible engine fires Ford is expanding a recall of SUVs and telling owners to park them outside after a series of engine fires that can happen even when the ignition switches are off. The company also announced Friday that it's recalling another 100,000 SUVs in the U.S. for a different problem that also causes engine fires. In May, Ford recalled about 39,000 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator large SUVs in the U.S. and told owners to park them outdoors and away from buildings. On Friday, the company expanded that recall to cover more than 66,000 vehicles from the 2021 model year after getting reports of five more fires. At the time of the first recall, Ford didn't know what was causing the fires. But on Friday the company said it has traced the cause to printed circuit boards that are susceptible to an electrical short. The company says it has reports of 21 fires and one injury, but no reports of fires extending to buildings. WCBS-TV CBS 2 NEW YORK ‘It's like being a kid out there:' South Carolina fire department hockey team competes for charity When they're not suppressing fires or responding to medical emergencies, the Myrtle Beach Fire Department, along with other Grand Strand first responders, can be found on the ice. "It's like being a kid out there," said Ross Porter, an engineer and paramedic for the City of Myrtle Beach. A group of about 25 make up the roster of the MBFD's hockey team. "I mean we got guys that just started playing last year," said firefighter Matt Chiarizio. "Never played ice hockey before in an organized league. They bought the equipment and now they're on the team." For the last five years, the team has gotten out on the ice to have fun and take a break while also raising money for charity. Since there isn't an ice rink in the Grand Strand, however, the team has to make the trek either up to Wilmington or down to Charleston to play or practice.
