Several departments responded to a building fire Friday night in Peru. It happened at about 8:30 p.m. on July 14 near the old Westclox building, a firefighter told News 8 on Saturday. The Western Clock Company was a manufacturing business in Peru, which operated in the community for more than a century, according to the Westclox Museum's website. The firefighter also said it happened in the old factory portion of the area, which is behind several other businesses. The fire did not spread to any other buildings, and no other businesses were impacted. The firefighter said all businesses in the area are back open as of Saturday afternoon. It is unclear how many fire departments responded to the scene. However, the Peru firefighter said crews were on scene for about three hours to contain and put out the fire.

VIDEO: A firefighter and a police officer are among six people hospitalized after a large blaze broke out at a north suburban senior housing complex, officials said. All of the hospitalizations were for smoke inhalation and were precautionary, officials said. Chopper 7HD was over the scene in the 100 block of West Wise Road, where Schaumburg firefighters were battling the blaze. Firefighters were seen using a ladder to help people down from an upper floor of the 97-unit Emerald Village building. With it being a senior living building, some residents have mobility issues. Officials said two apartments on the fourth floor of the building caught fire around mid-afternoon. They believe one unit caught fire first, and then the blaze spread to the other. The cause is still under investigation.

A community is mourning the loss of a young firefighter following a deadly crash on Saturday. Illinois State Police say 19-year-old Logan M. Kreiter of Fairfield was driving on Wayne County Road 925 North in his 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. For unknown reason, the Jeep veered off the road and turned over into a ditch. The Jeep flipped several times before finally coming to a stop in a field north of the roadway. Fairfield Rural Fire Department shared on social media: "It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Fairfield Rural Firefighter Logan Kreiter from a non departmental related automobile crash early this morning July 15th. Logan joined the department as a Junior Firefighter while in high school and has continued to serve while attending college.

The Woodland Fire Department is investigating a structure fire that spread to five homes and an outbuilding on Saturday near Lincoln Avenue and Elm Street. It is still unknown what caused the fire but the department said that responders were able to contain it to the homes of origin and prevent the flames from spreading. Woodland Fire said a call came in at 2:03 p.m. about a structure fire. Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion but are OK. According to PG&E's outage map 2,246 customers were temporarily without power in the nearby area. PG&E confirmed with KCRA 3 that the Woodland Fire Department asked them to de-energize customer's power to help with the fight against the structure fire. Power was lost at 2:40 p.m. and restored at 5:41 p.m.

VIDEO: State officials have expanded their efforts to protect the health of firefighters. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has been replacing the foam used on some fires, which has been linked to cancer. They just wrapped up a 6-month effort with better results than expected. It's called the Take Back and Replace Program. In the first 6 months this year, AZDEQ was able to help more than 50 fire departments in every Arizona county remove and replace this foam. The department originally thought it'd only be able to help around 20. "In general, it's just a dangerous thing to have around," Rural Metro Fire Department Chief Tim Soule said. "Mostly it's used for petroleum based fires and it helps suppress the gases." RMFD was one of the 52 departments AZDEQ helped. They got rid of the "aqueous film forming foam," or AFFF.

VIDEOS: Emergency crews responded to the scene of a train derailment in Montgomery County, which prompted temporary evacuations in the area. According to authorities, 16 cars on a CSX train derailed in the area of Stenton Avenue, Flourtown Road and Joshua Road in Whitemarsh Township early Monday morning. Sources told FOX 29 that multiple train cars believed to be carrying hazardous materials derailed in the area, prompting a Level 2 hazmat response. Police later said the only material leaking out of the train cars was silicone pellets, which pose no threat to the public. CSX says the cause of the crash was determined to be weather related. Residents and businesses closest to the derailment site were evacuated early Monday morning out of an abundance of caution and evacuations have since been lifted.

For an Advance volunteer firefighter who was born deaf, a lifelong dream can finally come true. A landmark settlement between Austin Freidt, a volunteer with the Cornatzer-Dulin VFD, and the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services will allow Freidt to receive disability-related accommodations to take the NC Emergency Medical Technician exam and become a full-time firefighter. He's wanted to become a firefighter since he was 5 years old. "I was happy," Friedt said about the decision. "I'm very, very excited because I can't wait to get a full-time job." Now at 24 years old, Freidt will be able to take the exam on paper and with a live voice reading it to him. This is the first time the OEMS will provide someone to read the EMT exam to an individual and the first time it will provide a paper copy since moving to a computer-based system in 2018.
