Recently departed Champaign fire chief was investigated for harassment Prior to his sudden resignation last week, former Champaign fire Chief Gary Ludwig was investigated for harassment allegations made by his employees, largely involving "inappropriate statements about women or sexually explicit content." According to documents obtained by The News-Gazette in a Freedom of Information Act request, City Manager Dorothy David conducted nine interviews between June 27 and July 5 with two victims/complainants and six witnesses concerning Ludwig, and interviewed Ludwig on July 6. Ludwig submitted his resignation July 14, effective immediately. "Although the investigation began with two complainants alleging separate incidents, I combined the investigative process into a single investigation as all of the allegations involved inappropriate statements about women or sexually explicit content," David said in a report dated Tuesday to city Human Resources Officer Amanda Farthing. THE NEWS-GAZETTE - METERED SITE 1 injured in fiery I-294 crash near Chicago's O'Hare airport VIDEO: One person was injured in a fiery crash Saturday morning on the Tri-State Tollway near O'Hare airport, Illinois State Police said. Troopers responded just before 11:15 a.m. to southbound Interstate 294 at River Road for a reported one-car crash, police said. For unknown reasons, the vehicle, traveling in the left lane, crossed onto the left shoulder, struck the center median wall and caught fire, police said. The driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle, was able to get out, and was taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The left lanes were temporarily closed during the incident. While emergency crews were on the scene, a four-vehicle crash occurred on the northbound side in the left lane, police said. No one was injured in the second crash. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO Fire at Naperville apartment complex causes $50K in damages A fire at an apartment building in Naperville caused $50,000 worth of damage Sunday night. At about 9:24 p.m., Naperville firefighters responded to a fire at a two-story, wood-framed, multifamily apartment building in the 1500 block of Country Lakes Drive. The fire was under control within 20 minutes and there were no injuries to any firefighters. Damages to the home are estimated at $50,000. The unit where the fire occurred was deemed uninhabitable, however, the rest of the building was able to be reoccupied, fire officials said. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Naperville Fire Department investigation team. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Boat bursts into flames at Florida marina Authorities responded to a boat fire at a marina in Coconut Grove Friday night. Dispatchers with Miami Fire Rescue told Local 10 News that firefighters responded to the scene of a boat fire around 9:30 p.m. near the 2500 block of South Bay Shore Drive. "It took a little time to put extra sections of hose together, but we were able to set that up quickly and the combination of the fireboat and the crews that were on the marina were able to keep that fire from spreading," said Cpt. Ignatius Carroll, a Miami Fire Rescue spokesperson. There were no injuries reported in the incident and authorities are working to determine the cause of the fire. WPLG-TV ABC 10 MIAMI Ex-major league pitcher now a Virginia firefighter VIDEO/PHOTOS: "Way to put that fire out." The message to Southside native and former major league reliever Cla Meredith came from then-Baltimore Orioles bench coach Terry Crowley. Meredith — a sinker-ball throwing, right-handed pitcher with a low three-quarters delivery who always excelled under pressure in his six-year big league career — had just helped the O's beat the Boston Red Sox by working out of a tense late-game jam. The Meadowbrook High and VCU baseball alum put out plenty of comparable fires in his time with the Orioles, Red Sox and San Diego Padres. And he has always remembered the encouragement from Crowley because it proved prophetic for the now-father of three who, at the time, had yet to realize his boyhood dream of fighting real fires. RICHMOND TIMES-DISPTACH - METERED SITE Man saved by iPhone technology after car plummets 400 feet over California cliff VIDEO: A man was saved by technology late Friday evening after he drove off a cliff in the Mt. Wilson area, plummeting nearly 400 feet before his car finally came to a stop. According to deputies with the Crescenta Valley Station of Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, they were contacted by an iPhone communication center at around 10:30 p.m., alerting them of a crash on Mt. Wilson Road. Mike Leum, one of the members of Montrose Search and Rescue, says that the man was bleeding from the head while they rescued him and that his car was totaled in the incident. "I believe that if we didn't have that good location information in a timely manner, he probably would've bled out," Leum said. The phone, an iPhone 14, used a feature that instantly reports a crash to 9-1-1 via satellite, in the event that the user is not able to make the call themselves. THE NEWS-GAZETTE - METERED SITE Increase in fires caused by arson in one Nevada city VIDEO: There have been eight arson arrests already this year, and 30 fires that the Reno Fire Department said were arson. Generally, Reno Fire Department Fire Investigators arrest 10 to 13 people total for arson in a year, but with July only being a little over halfway into this year, there is cause for concern. Fires are one of the most dangerous things to occur here in Northern Nevada. Hot temperatures and overgrown vegetation are a fire's best friend. Reno Fire Department Fire Marshal Tray Palmer says, "This week we have made three arrests, which is unusual for us to have that many arrests for arson in such a short period of time." The cause of the increase in these arson fires are unknown. "This year we are seeing a lot of activity. We are seeing a lot of activity with the homeless population, we are seeing a lot of activity with the criminal side," says Palmer. KOLO-TV ABC/CW+ 8 RENO PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
