VIDEOS/PHOTOS: An investigation is underway after a man died in a crash between a car and train early Saturday. According to Sauget Police, the accident happened around 2 a.m. Saturday on Route 3, in Suaget, Ill. A man was driving a Blue F-150 truck southbound on Route 3 when he ran into the train's second engine. The man died on impact. The victim has been identified as 39-year-old Jamarin Ballard of Cahokia Heights. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but police say the man may have been driving at a high rate of speed. According to police, the train involved was carrying hazardous materials, but there were no leaks, and no danger was posed to the public. Route 3 from Monsanto Avenue to Queeny Avenue was closed after the crash but reopened just after 8 a.m. Multiple agencies responded, including St. Clair County EMA, Prairie Du Pont Fire and Illinois State Police, to aid with the call.  

VIDEO: A construction worker was seriously injured in an explosion in Ravenswood Saturday morning. Chicago police said a fire and small explosion broke out in the basement of a building in the 1600 block of West Winona Street at 11:30 a.m. People were inside the building with their pets when the incident occurred. Many scrambled to get out of the building in time. The homeowner said three construction workers were applying sealant to the basement when she heard and felt the explosion. Ellen Dellorto said she was in her living room at the time when she heard a loud noise. "I felt the floor pop up. All of a sudden, there was all this smoke. I ran to the back and said, ‘What happened?' and I looked in the basement and saw flames," Ellen said. She handed the worker a fire extinguisher, but the flames pressed him back.  

PHOTOS: An empty Woonsocket mill went up in flames and is now reduced to rubble as bricks lay in piles where the building once stood. "I'm sure everybody is shocked that building has been there for a long time," said Woonsocket resident Robert Hayes. Firefighters say they got a call around 1:00 a.m. and saw flames shooting through the building. Fire crews as far as West Warwick came in to help, spending hours spraying water from ladder trucks to get the flames under control. "Initially we were worried about all the exposures because of the heat that was coming off of it," said Woonsocket Fire Chief Bob Cahill. "We concentrated on the main mill building once the wind shifted in our favor." A real estate listing for the property on Privilege Street says the over 220,000-square-foot building was built in 1902 and offers it up as a possible residential conversion or self-storage investment.  

VIDEO: Firefighters now have a new vehicle fire simulator that is safer for firefighters and the environment. "Vehicle fires are intense and dirty," said Chief of Training Tom Schloemer. "The plastic or synthetic interior and fuel create hot, toxic smoke which is harmful to both firefighters and the environment. This new training prop allows us to prepare for and practice fighting vehicle fires with less risk for firefighters and less air pollution." The simulators teach Cleveland firefighters how to put out car and propane fires. "It really shows us what it's like. We've never seen car fires so doing this and the propane tank opens our eyes," said Adam Yako, a Cleveland firefighter in training. Yako graduates from the Cleveland Fire Training Academy in August. His class is the first to use these simulators.  

VIDEO: Deputies responded to two separate car burglaries Saturday night, with both incidents occurring at different fire stations in East Baton Rouge Parish. Firefighters returned from a late night call to find someone had broken into multiple employee vehicles at the East Side Fire Department on Old Hammond Highway. "It's a betrayal of trust, that you park out here and we're here to do good, we're here to serve the people, we're here to help and somebody takes advantage of it," Captain John Taylor said. The burglars shattered the window of the district chief's truck. Deputies said two personal guns were stolen. "They came in, broke the windows, they looked for anything they could grab pretty easily, cash, guns, things on that line," Taylor said. Luckily, they couldn't get any further.  

VIDEO: At the Henrico Fire Department Training Facility off Woodman Road, fire crews got an extra hand from nearly 60 young girls who they hope to one day possibly recruit to the force. It was all part of their two-day summer camp called Girls on Fire. The camp is the creation of Ronny Martin, the Lieutenant of Recruit Training with Henrico Fire. "I thought it was a great idea to introduce a young lady to the fire services because it's not very often that we're told we can be firefighters," Martin said. Martin says she's been dreaming of a local camp that could help inspire young girls to pursue a career in public safety for a few years now. "I have been pitching a girls' camp for the past two years," Ronny said. "I went to the ‘Women in Fire Conference' a few years ago where I was first introduced to a camp like this."
