Chicago house fire leads to death investigation after body found An Englewood house fire is now at the center of a death investigation Saturday after Chicago Police found a man shot to death inside. "This victim did suffer multiple gunshot wounds to the back and front of the body," said crisis responder Andrew Holmes. The fire started around 3 p.m., according to officials as flames tore through the house in the 5900-block of South Sangamon Street. Investigators put the blaze out and then found the body. "State marshal is out here with the dogs on the inside, so they are trying to determine if this person was shot on the inside. If he was shot on the inside then there may be some shell casings on the inside, so that could tell us a whole lot," said Holmes. Neighbors said the home has been vacant for quite some time. Now, police want to know who was at the home before the fire and how long the unidentified man had been there as investigators work to figure out how the fire started. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Constable: Wauconda Fire District found way to spread cheer during pandemic birthdays The coronavirus arrived in the suburbs last March as if it were a curse from a disgruntled leprechaun seeking revenge for being cheated out of his St. Patrick's Day celebration. The pandemic laid waste to all our plans, even kids' birthday celebrations. For her ninth birthday on March 18 of 2020, Maddie Myers and her mom, Emily Myers, were scheduled to spend a week of spring break frolicking on the beach on Marco Island off the Gulf Coast of Florida. The coronavirus scuttled their trip and kept them home in Wauconda. "I was imagining kids seeing all their birthdays going by, and thinking about how my boys would have felt not having parties," says Mueller, the father of three sons with a history of parties at pools and bouncy places. So he launched the idea of a birthday program, with crews from the Wauconda Fire District rolling past the birthday child's house, sirens blaring, lights flashing and a special birthday sign with the proper age to make it a birthday a kid never would forget. ILLINOIS DAILY HERALD - METERED SITE Child injured in Chicago's Southwest Side high-rise fire Three people, including a child, were hurt after a fire broke out at a high-rise Saturday on Chicago's Southwest Side. The fire was reported about 12:30 p.m. at a building in the 4300 block of West Ford City Drive, Chicago fire officials said. "I was asleep in my unit on the fourth floor, I didn't even smell the smoke didn't hear any alarms but fireman they just knocked at the door and he told me let's go. and when he opened the door the hallway was full of smoke," said Carla Knight. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke in the building and put the fire out about an hour later. The fire appears to have started in the kitchen, according to the fire department. Sierra Candia, who lives on the 11th floor said she was taking shower when she suddenly started smelling smoke. "When I was going down the stairs, it just kept getting blacker and blacker and I couldn't breathe and then when I got to the other side it was somewhat clearer but it was scary, I wasn't expecting anythng like that, obvsiously," said Candia. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Galesburg firefighters make icy rescue Friday night Galesburg Firefighters, with the help of police officers, made an icy rescue from Lake Storey Friday night. According to a release from the city, Fire and Police personnel were called out to the lake at around 6:44 for reports of a subject who had fallen through the ice and was in the water. It was reported that the subject was in the middle of the lake, approximately 80 yards out by police officers already on the scene. Captain Jim Pendergast and firefighter Kyle Harms donned ice rescue gear and walked onto the ice and entered the water about 30 yards from the subject. They chopped and broke apart ice through another 30 yards to get to the subject. Once contact was made, they attached him to an ice rescue board and he was quickly pulled to shore by the remaining fire crews. The subject was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center where they were met by a Peoria Life Flight. No word on his current condition. WGIL-AM GALEBURG RADIO 14 Crowd Rallies In Hopes Of Saving Fire Station 13 In Glenview A large crowd rallied outside Glenview Fire Station 13 Saturday in a last-ditch effort to keep it open. Neighbors said closing the fire station at 831 E. Lake Ave. in Glenview will jeopardize community safety. Firefighters and residents think they will have to wait longer when they pick up the phone to call 911 for a fire truck or an ambulance. CBS 2's Charlie De Mar earlier this week asked Glenview Village President Jim Patterson about the concerns about response times with the station closing. Patterson said a study found Fire Station 13 and its single engine are active about 30 minutes during a 24-hour shift – one of the slower stations in town. Firefighters there will be moved to other stations. That study also found that closing Station 13 comes with a savings of $1.25 million for the village. Patterson said he does not believe it will be that high. The president of the Glenview Firefighters Association said the village has called for a special Board of Trustees meeting on Monday night to discuss the fate of the firehouse. 7 CenterPoint Energy workers injured in natural gas explosion in Texas, authorities say VIDEO: Seven CenterPoint Energy workers were injured in a massive gas fire near Klein on Friday. It happened in the 18700 block of Gleannloch Lakes Boulevard around 6 p.m. Comcast crews were in the area working when they punctured a gas line, according to the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office. CenterPoint Energy crews were then sent to fix the line. As they were leaving, crews hit what was described as a 6-inch high pressure natural gas line, which is considered a main line. Six workers were taken to hospitals for evaluation and treatment, according to CenterPoint Energy. One of those workers was transported via Life Flight. That victim was in critical condition, according to authorities. The fire marshal says a 500 ft. perimeter was established in the area and all residents were evacuated. One house in the area sustained damage to its exterior and fencing. Residents in the area were not allowed to return to their homes until the fire was completely out. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Woman dies in fire truck crash in Florida; 5 firefighters injured PHOTOS: A 52-year-old Ormond Beach woman died and five City of Daytona Beach firefighters were hurt following a traffic crash near Halifax Health Medical Center on Saturday. Just after 5 p.m., a Daytona Beach Fire Department truck flipped over after a collision with a silver Pontiac driven by the woman, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department. Investigators believe the Pontiac was going around 80 miles per hour in the southbound lanes of North Clyde Morris Boulevard when it hit the tail end of the fire truck just before the intersection of West International Speedway Boulevard and U.S. 92, causing it to flip over. The fire truck had left the parking lot of the West Marine store nearby and was struck by the Pontiac as it attempted to cross the southbound lanes of Clyde Morris in order to head north on Clyde Morris. Paramedics took the driver of the Pontiac to HHMC, where she died from her injuries shortly after arrival. WKMG-TV CBS 6 ORLANDO Several fire departments withdraw recruits from training after New York firefighter injured Several fire departments pulled recruits from the state's fire academy after a city firefighter suffered a medical emergency while participating in a training drill Wednesday at the facility in Montour Falls, near Watkins Glen. Battalion Chief Sean McGarrity of the Ridge Road Fire Department, in Greece, Monroe County, confirmed that four department recruits were pulled from the training at the New York State Academy of Fire Science in Schuyler County. They will not return when training resumes Tuesday. "In light of what happened, we brought them home," the battalion chief said Saturday. The city of Rochester Fire Department brought home its seven recruits following what happened to the Watertown trainee. Lt. Ryan Fleming, the Rochester Fire Department's public information officer, said his department "is still evaluating" whether the seven recruits will return to training at the state academy when it resumes Tuesday. WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES - METERED SITE Fire destroys North Dakota fire station, 6 trucks PHOTOS: The Glenburn Fire Department lost its building and six trucks in an early morning fire Saturday. Lance Johnson, fire district board vice president and firefighter, said the department responded to a call at 5 a.m. Area fire departments from Lansford, Maxbass and the Minot Air Force Base assisted. "Smoke was rolling out of the building pretty hard," Johnson said of the scene when firefighters arrived. "Black smoke. Everybody had to go in with air packs." Although the building's walls and roof remain, Johnson said, the structure is considered a total loss due to the damage. The fire also damaged a large pumper truck, a tanker, three grass fire units and a rescue truck. It is unknown at this time whether the vehicles with lesser damage might be salvageable, Johnson said. Area departments have offered to loan equipment in the interim as the Glenburn department seeks to restore or replace equipment. Johnson said the department carries insurance, but it is uncertain whether insurance will cover full replacement costs. MINOT DAILY NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
