Fire in historic Rockford building complex sends firefighter to the hospital One firefighter was hurt after a fire in a historic Rockford building which caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. Officials from the Rockford Fire Department says crews were first alerted by the automatic fire alarm in the Winnebago County Court Building Complex in the 400 block of Elm St. at around 10:45 p.m. Saturday. As the first firefighters got to the scene, they did not find any smoke coming out from the building. Crews later found smoke in the basement of the building. As firefighters looked for where the smoke was coming from, they found a large fire in a storage room. The fire started in an area that did not have access to the building's sprinkler system. RFD says firefighters encountered high heat and heavy smoke as they were battling the blaze. One firefighter was hurt in the fire. VIDEO: 1 killed in Hawaii building fire One person was killed in an early morning building fire in the McCully area Sunday morning, according to HFD. Crews responded to a two-story walk-up just after 5 a.m. located along Date Street. Nearly 40 HFD personnel from 10 units arrived to find the structure with heavy flames on the first floor reaching to the second. Once they established their water supply and started fighting the flames, HFD had the fire under control in about 40 minutes. It was fully extinguished just before 7 a.m. Neighbors said they were woken up by the sound of an explosion. "We thought one of our kids broke a window, kicked it with their feet or something," said Lehi Fanene of Honolulu. "So we ran out before we knew it, we were dealing with a fire." Fanene was worried the fire would spread to his home and the other properties. HAWAII NEWS NOW Texas firefighter survives tornado hit on fire station unscathed PHOTO: It could take well into this week to clear all the downed trees and debris in one East Texas city, slammed by tornadoes this past Friday night. Longtime residents say nothing like this had ever happened in the small community of Hughes Springs, and they are still trying to process the scope of what hit them. Firefighters gathered at Hughes Springs volunteer fire department to salvage what records and equipment they could from the mangled I-beams and collapsed rooms of their wrecked building. "It carries a lot of emotions with it too. This was our home for 40 years or so. Of course, it's sad to see it like this," said longtime volunteer firefighter John Burson. Unknown to us at the time of the storm, there was a firefighter at the back part of the fire department building when the tornado hit. Randy Jones arrived at the station Friday night, preparing chainsaws and emergency equipment expecting to help in damage areas, not knowing what was coming next. About 24 hours after saving numerous victims impacted by the blaze at 429 East 52nd St., the city Fire Department, via Facebook, explained how their "herculean team effort" proved successful. First, the FDNY said a heavy fire blocked the front door, which was the only way out for folks enduring the horror of the fire that left 38 people injured -- two critically, five seriously -- after a lithium battery connected to a micro mobility device sparked the blaze inside a 20th floor apartment. In total, four firefighters were put on a life-saving rope to rescue a trapped victim. "We train on that; we train on all of our procedures often," said FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Frank Leeb, as shared by the department on social media. In total, one fire truck, one ambulance and an alternative response vehicle were destroyed when Hurricane Ian's storm surge busted into a firehouse that is now condemned. The emergency vehicles were being stowed away at Station #31, at the corner of Estero Boulevard and Donora Boulevard. Fort Myers Beach Fire Chief Ron Martin told NBC2 that there was at least five feet of water inside the vehicle bays, rendering the life-saving vehicles useless. "We are the stewards of preparedness," said Chief Martin. "You cannot prepare for an event like Ian." The emergency vehicles weren't forgotten about or left behind. It's the plan to leave more than $1 million worth of gear on the island during a hurricane. WZVN-TV ABC 7 NAPLES EMS in Louisiana uses unique lifesaving technique for 100th time VIDEO: The New Orleans EMS administered blood to a woman shot on Bourbon Street Sunday morning while she was still in the street. They say this is a rare ability for EMS services across the country and saves lives. Thomas Mauro was the paramedic who gave her the blood using a Lifeflow device. He was able to get blood into the victim in just 10 minutes as opposed to the normal 40 or so minutes it can take to get victims' blood in a hospital. "Quick, rapid blood administration is the most important thing you can do besides getting them to the hospital as quickly as possible. I feel better now that I can make more of a difference than I could before," Mauro said. This was the 100th time New Orleans EMS was able to use this service since it launched almost exactly a year ago. WDSU-TV NBC 6 NEW ORLEANS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
