Trading one helmet for another in Rockford: Why some veterans look for careers as first responders after serving For some military members, the desire to protect their community doesn't stop when they leave the service. Veterans often choose jobs that fit with the skillsets they've gained during their time in active duty. One of the top choices is firefighting, where the physical intensity, burden of responsibility and teamwork match their duties in the armed forces. "So I joined the Marines, I actually enlisted when I was 17 with my parents' permission, went to bootcamp at 18 I think maybe a week after I graduated high school," said Rockford Firefighter Luke Vucsko. After seeing the movie Top Gun at an early age, Vucsko decided military life was for him. He chose the Marines, and spent ten years of active duty traveling the world. WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD Multiple agencies respond to two simultaneous fires in Benton Fire crews in Benton received assistance taking care of two fires that broke out simultaneously on Sunday morning, November 13. Fire Chief Shane Cockrum said crews with the Benton Fire Department were called out at 8:49 a.m. to a structure fire on Enterprise Street. As firefighters were gearing up to respond, they received a call about a second structure fire at 8:50 a.m. to 1103 Public Square. When crews arrived on scene, smoke was showing from both of the structures. The initial unit responding to Enterprise reported there was smoke showing from second floor of a commercial building. Additional units responded to the Public Square location. To help battle both fires, the Benton Fire Department activated the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), a statewide system used to contact area fire departments for assistance. VIDEO: 6 dead after a pair of vintage military aircraft collide at a Texas air show Six people are dead after two World War II-era military planes collided in midair and crashed at Dallas Executive Airport during an airshow Saturday afternoon, killing all on board, the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office said Sunday. "We can confirm that there are six (fatalities)," a spokesperson for the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office told CNN in a phone call. More than 40 fire rescue units responded to the scene after the two vintage planes – a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 Kingcobra – went down during the Wings Over Dallas airshow. In video footage of the crash that was described by Dallas' mayor as "heartbreaking," the planes are seen breaking apart in midair after the collision, then hitting the ground within seconds, before bursting into flames. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were due to arrive at the scene Sunday. CNN Retired Florida firefighter, 56, back on the job after 29 years of service VIDEO: Dante Farina retired from the Orlando Fire Department in 2019 after 29 years of service. Now, he is back at new recruit training with the Seminole County Fire Department. His spark rekindled after Farina was asked a simple question by a firefighter at another department. "He asked me if I miss the fire service and I said every day. He says, 'we're running a hiring process, you should apply.' So I went home, spoke with my wife, and she was on board with it," he said. His wife was also a firefighter for 20 years. But when the 56-year-old applied, he was rejected. "I applied, and I scored in the top 10. They didn't even touch me, they didn't want me." That just lit the fire inside of him even more. Farina was determined to prove he still had what it took. WOFL-TV FOX 35 ORLANDO California firefighters smash cars for fun and charity VIDEO: Hayward firefighters caused a multi-car pileup on Saturday but it was no accident and it was all for a good cause. It all went down at the Good Guys car show at the Alameda County Fairgrounds during a benefit fundraiser with a twist -- and a grind and a crunch. They rumbled and rattled in from all over the Bay Area -- die-hard, first-responders braving this demolition derby competition, seeking the thrill of victory and, with luck, the coveted trophy which was basically a welded-together pile of car parts. "I think it takes all kinds of luck," said one driver with a laugh. "That's what it's all about -- luck!" First came the qualifying, with the 20-plus entrants trying to survive a figure-8 race where everyone soon meets in the middle, bumper-to-fender. This annual Pleasanton demolition derby is a fundraiser for the Hayward Firefighters Local 1909 charitable fund. "There's a lot of golf tournaments, a lot of stickball tournaments, a lot of softball tournaments," said Hayward firefighter Nicholas Stevens. KPIX-TV CBS 5 SAN FRANCISCO Southern Rhode Island firefighters provide training to colleagues from Greece PHOTOS: While watching a female lieutenant with Charlestown Ambulance Rescue Service perform a demonstration using a saw outside the Watch Hill Fire Department last Thursday, a smile came across the face of a suddenly excited volunteer with the Union of Hellenic Fire Service Volunteers. The native of Greece, one of 16 who traveled to Rhode Island recentely as part of a comprehensive training partnership, wouldn't have had the hands-on opportunity back home and reveled in the opportunity to lead the physically challenging response. "She stepped forward, turned to us and just said, ‘I want to do that," said Watch Hill Assistant Fire Chief Christopher Koretski. "That is what we hope for when we host these events, volunteers who want to learn and share in the international brotherhood and sisterhood of firefighters." THE WESTERLY SUN - METERED SITE New York City Council holding hearing on e-bikes and fire safety VIDEO: The New York City Council is holding a hearing on e-bikes and battery safety on Monday after recent fires, including one that injured dozens inside a Midtown apartment building and another that killed a little girl in Queens. The fires are prime examples of why fire safety advocates are backing proposed changes to the law, CBS2's Elijah Westbrook reported. At 10 a.m., the City Council is expected to talk about the new legislation aimed at informing e-bike and e-scooter users about just how dangerous the devices can be - especially when it comes to improperly storing and charging them. Videos from the FDNY show the horrifying impacts. Forty-three residents of an apartment building on the East Side were injured in a fire on Nov. 5. Investigators discovered at least five e-bikes either inside or outside caught fire. "We believe the occupant was repairing bikes in the building," said FDNY Chief Fire Marshal Dan Flynn.
