Hours after Palatine firefighters pulled the boys from the pond Wednesday afternoon both youths died at local hospitals, police said. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the boys as Romalice Brooks, 6, and Ro'Siah Brooks, 4. Their causes of death remained under investigation Friday morning, said Johnnie Kearney, an investigator with the medical examiner's office. Relatives said the boys were brothers. Ivy said she was inside when she heard her sons screaming her name and looked to see them struggling in the pond's icy waters. WGEM-TV NBC/CW+ 19 QUINCY One hospitalized, several pets dead after Pekin house fire A weekend house fire in North Pekin sent one person to the hospital and left several pets dead. According to the North Pekin Fire Department, firefighters were called to Elm Street Saturday around 1:00 a.m. One person was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and burns. Two cats were found dead, with another taken to an animal hospital for treatment. A dog was also known to reside there, but was not recovered. Damages are estimated at $80,000, and the family is currently displaced. The department says the cause seems to be an accidental cooking fire on the stove. No foul play is suspected at this time, and the incident is under investigation. The family tells 25News that they are currently accepting donations to help rebuild their home, and recover lost belongings. WEEK-TV NBC/ABC/CW+ 25 PEORIA Galesburg firefighters battle two structure fires, one of which was intentionally set Galesburg firefighters this weekend responded and battled two structure fires. According to Fire Department Chief Randy Hovind, at around 8:44 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, 11 personnel from all three stations responded to the 1000-block of Garden Lane. Upon arrival, heavy smoke and fire was showing from the single-story structure. The Brooks Street station Crew entered the home with an attack line and extinguished the fire. A single resident and a dog were able to make it out safely, however, two felines died in the fire and were recovered by our Firefighters. Preliminary damage estimates are at $30,360. Hovind says the cause of the fire has been determined to be an unattended open-flame candle in a bathroom. The second structure fire was reported Saturday, Nov. 26, at 3:18 a.m. 11 personnel on duty from all three stations responded to the 2000-block of Grand Avenue, where the building was engulfed in flames. WGIL-FM 93.7 GALEBURG Quincy firefighters stress importance of Keep the Wreath Red campaign after two house fires It has only been only two days since the Quincy Fire Department started their Keep the Wreath Red campaign and they've already responded to two house fires. Two red light bulbs on the wreath above the Central Fire Station turned white because of mobile home fires that happened Thursday. A mobile home on McKinney Street and a mobile home on Herrli Drive caught fire on Thanksgiving Day because of improperly disposed cigarettes. The purpose of the Keep the Wreaths Red campaign is to bring awareness to the causes of holiday house fires, because when a house fire happens, a red light turns white. Captain Jerry Mast said although there were two house fires at the start of their campaign, they usually become less frequent throughout the season. VIDEOS: Fire heavily damages marina warehouse in Connecticut A marina warehouse in Mystic was heavily damaged in a four-alarm fire late Sunday night. Multiple departments responded around 9 p.m. to Washington Street on the Stonington side of Mystic for the massive fire at the Seaport Marine Warehouse. "It's an older building that's been around as long as I've been here which is 26 years," said Bruce Flax, president, Mystic Chamber of Commerce. The Salvation Army New London Canteen said it responded as well. The fire started at around 8:45 p.m. and quickly grew. Crews had to use water from the Mystic River to help extinguish the flames, which were visible for hours. "It's sad, it's always sad when something like this happens," Flax said. "It looks like nobody was hurt which is good." The Whalers Inn, a boutique hotel, was evacuated because of the amount of smoke in the air. WFSB-TV CBS 3 HARTFORD Related with Video: Raging fire destroys popular New England marina overnight Alabama the 1st state to include peer support training in fire recruit curriculum Alabama has become the first state in the nation to add peer support training to its curriculum for new fire school recruits, thanks to funding from the Alabama Department of Mental Health and support from the Professional Fire Fighters of Alabama (PFFA). According to reports, 37% of firemen and women have battled post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and firefighters are three times more likely to die on the job than those in other careers. Tragically, one firefighter loses his or her life to suicide every two days. The statewide peer support program will be a valuable keystone in aiding fire personnel in need according to International Association of Fire Fighters General President Edward Kelly. "Adding behavioral health and peer support counseling training into the recruit curriculum is groundbreaking work," he said. WJLA-TV ABC 7 WASHINGTON D.C. 80th anniversary of Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston, deadliest nightclub fire in US history VIDEOS: In the blink of an eye the Cocoanut Grove, one of Boston's swankiest nightclubs, became an unimaginable inferno — trapping hundreds of panicked victims as they jammed the club's exits. In less than 15 minutes, 492 people were dead and another 166 injured, making the blaze the deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history. While no one knows exactly how the fire started 80 years ago on Nov. 28, 1942, its influence on fire and safety codes and on the medical treatment of burn victims still resonates. The fire started at about 10:15 p.m. as revelers packed the club near the city's South End on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, hoping to forget about the early days of World War II for a few hours. The first flames broke out in a basement portion of the club, known as the Melody Lounge. WCVB-TV ABC 5 BOSTON PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
