Celebrating IAFC's 150th Anniversary: A Legacy of Leadership in Fire and Emergency Services
Author: John Butler, IAFC President & Fire Chief, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue
As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), I would like to reflect upon its rich history and the vital role of leadership within the fire and emergency services. We can all take inspiration from the iconic figures who have shaped our profession. Additionally, I will recommend three key leadership takeaways that you can draw from our history and experiences, and encourage you to remain steadfast in our mission to protect and save lives and property. Achieving this will ensure that the fire and emergency services community remains a beacon of service, courage, and selflessness for generations to come.

VIDEO: Firefighters battled a massive blaze at a historic church on the Far South Side Saturday morning. Crews were called to Advocate United Church located at 10251 South Avenue L at about 3:30 a.m. All occupants made it out of the building and no injuries were reported. The chapel's steeple collapsed as firefighters worked on the blaze. Fire officials say the church is approximately 100 years old. Homes near the church were evacuated as a precaution. CTA warming buses were on the scene for neighbors that were evacuated. Chicago Fire says the fire appeared to be primarily in the roof area. Firefighters said they used a defensive approach during most of the process. Ultimately, most of the structure was ruined. The church was 3 and a half stories. It was not immediately clear how the fire started. The incident is under investigation.

VIDEO: October is National Fire Prevention Month, and one local firefighter has a unique way of inspiring younger generations to take interest in a firefighting career. For the past 18 years, Bo Chaney has served with the Rockford Fire Department. Today, Chaney is a recruiter, looking for the next group of first responders to protect the city. Chaney has stepped into a new arena to encourage and educate young people in the profession — writing children's books. "The Adventures of Rob and Rocky" tells the story of two brothers, named after Chaney's own sons, discussing and exploring what they want to be when they grow up. Chaney also released a coloring book for "The Adventures of Rob and Rocky." The Rockford firefighter says he didn't get exposure to the career when he was a a child, which inspired him to publish the books — with a little help from his boys.

PHOTOS: An outside fire has been reported in a railroad yard in central Bakersfield on Sunday near California Avenue and Elm Street. According to reports, the outside fire is burning in a train yard west of Bakersfield High School. Black smoke was reported to have been seen in the area. Bakersfield and Kern County fire crews are currently on scene assessing the blaze. A total of five engines and 17 firefighters responded, according to Bakersfield Fire Department Captain, Tim Ortiz. Local fire department officials are expected to be on scene throughout the night and to maintain the burning pile of wood. Ortiz says there have been no arrests made regarding this incident and that smoke could potentially be an issue for homes in the area of the fire.

VIDEO: October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Statistics show one in eight women will develop the disease in their lifetime, and in some cases, environmental factors can cause or contribute to it. Dori Booth recently joined the Sedona Fire District as the Division Chief Fire Marshal. But being exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals spans long before her new role. Before Sedona, she was a firefighter with Phoenix Fire and was a combat veteran with the U.S. Army in Afghanistan. Certain chemicals like benzene and beryllium, emitted in gasoline or old insulation materials like vinyl and asbestos, are human carcinogens. The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says breathing them in or getting them on your skin has been proven to cause numerous types of cancer.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: A fire chief restored a vintage fire truck for fallen firefighters' and first responders' "last alarm." The chief, from Goldsboro, North Carolina, told WNCT that he wanted to build and maintain the vehicle so that it could be used in funeral processions. "Our goal is to build and maintain a funeral coach for firefighters and first responders, and to do that, we've obtained an antique firetruck that hopefully we can rebuild and restore into an appropriate transport for firefighters on their last alarm," Sean Quinby, the founder of Last Alarm Foundation of North Carolina and fire chief at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, told the station. "The Last Alarm Foundation of North Carolina" was created by Fire Chief Quinby when he became the owner of a 1942 vintage Ford fire truck. He initially had several ideas for the vehicle.
