Fire heavily damages Peoria Heights home Peoria Heights Firefighters say one home suffered catastrophic damage, and two others suffered exterior damage after a fire early Sunday morning. It happened around 4:30 AM on East Rouse Avenue. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire coming from all sides of the home, with smoke coming from the siding on the houses to the east and west. Mutual aid from Chillicothe, Dunlap, Peoria, and West Peoria were called in to help fight the flames. In a statement on its Facebook page, the Peoria Heights Fire Department says the initial home suffered catastrophic fire damage to all areas, with most of the second floor collapsing into the first floor. The houses on the west and east side suffered exterior damage only, with no damage to the interior. No one was injured. The fire is currently under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshal's office. WEEK-TV NBC/ABC/CW+ PEORIA Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District Awarded $50K Several local fire departments will be receiving federal grant money courtesy of the Assistance to Firefighter program. Last week, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) announced the awarding of a total of $676,264 to the fire departments. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District was awarded $50,241 to replace their 20-year-old air filling station, which is used to fill firefighters' self-contained breathing apparatus and SCUBA bottles, according to a news release. In addition, the grant will be used to purchase equipment to annually test breathing masks, hazardous materials masks, WMD masks, and other equipment. The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District will replace all their out-of-date radios. The federal grant funds are intended to help the local fire departments improve and replace personnel safety equipment, upgrade to the latest technology, purchase new fire trucks, and hire new firefighters. DEERFILED PATCH Family displaced after Rockford house fire A Rockford family is without a home after a fire broke out Sunday afternoon. The Rockford Fire Department says firefighters were called to the 1100 block of N. Main St. just before 1:30 p.m. for a report of a fire in a home. As first responders got to the scene minutes later, they found smoke coming from the front door. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in about ten minutes. The City of Rockford Building Department has condemned the first floor of the building dur to extensive damage. RFD says the Red Cross is providing support for a family that lived in the apartment. No one was hurt in the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Rockford Fire Department. Damage caused by the fire is estimated at $25,000. This fire started about 30 minutes before another house fire, caused by a downed power line, on N. Church St. in Rockford. WREX-TV NBC 13 ROCKFORD Quincy Fire Department, furnace experts give heating safety tips After the first blast of winter weather, the Quincy Fire Department says now is the time for people to be thinking about heating safety. The department said they receive about 100 fire calls every year with half of those calls happen during the winter months. Firefighter Bryan Meyer said space heaters are the cause of many of those fires. He said if you are using one, don't use an extension cord as it can be a tripping hazard and also overload the socket. Meyer said it's important to keep a three foot area around the heater clear when it's in use. "I know it's hard for people to keep that space around a space heater, you want to sit in front of it or stuff gets busy and you put a basket of clothes in front of it, it's just going to heat that up an eventually cause a fire," he said. Meyer said when you are buying a space heater, make sure it has safety features including a tip-over shut off function and a grill over the heating components. According to officials, the fire began just after midnight on North McDonald Street. Firefighters initially began fighting the blaze at a church on Wilcox. Several nearby homes were evacuated before the fire spread to a nearby house. Soon after, a second fire broke out at a nearby restaurant. Officials said a three-alarm response was requested, and firefighters received assistance from Anna, Melissa, Plano, Fairview, Princeton, Frisco, Lowery Crossing, Weston, Allen, and Westminster. The blaze destroyed the church on Wilcox as well as a home and a restaurant on North McDonald, officials said. According to officials, no injuries have been reported as a result of the fire. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Retired Kentucky firefighter 'pins' his daughter during recruit graduation ceremony VIDEO: After months of training, Lexington Firefighter class number 70 is ready to serve the city. This class has a unique story. For the first time in the department's 151 years of service, a female recruit will follow in her father's footsteps and become a Lexington Firefighter. In most cases, it's the son who follows in his father's firefighter boots. 20-year-old Hunter Martin is one of those sons. "I'm thankful to be here and I'm honored that they gave me a chance being so young, and it feels great to follow in his footsteps," said Hunter Martin. His father is Major Marcus Martin. "Hopefully, following in my footsteps to enjoy his whole career as I have makes you feel very proud," said Major Martin. The flag holder for this class is Katherine Boyd. She's making department history as the first daughter to follow her dad as a Lexington firefighter. THE MOUNT AIRY NEWS Minnesota community remembers Black church destroyed by arson in 1907 VIDEO: Dozens of people gathered in Hastings Sunday afternoon to learn about a local Black church that was set on fire over a century ago. Nobody was ever charged in connection with the fire. The Hastings community came to First Presbyterian Church to remember history that happened blocks away. Building Remembrance for Reconciliation, nonprofit, organized the event called "Breaking the Silence: Remembering Brown's Chapel AME." Davu Seru's family roots run deep in Hastings. In the 1800s, his family, The Wallace's, settled in Minnesota. "I'm here to honor my ancestors. Without them, there would be no me," Seru said. In July of 1892, Seru's ancestors opened up Brown's Chapel African Methodist Episcopal congregation (AME) in Hastings. The church became a pillar and safe space in the black community. "Former enslaved people were coming up from the south and elsewhere to make a life too. A lot of racialized violence happened," Seru said. KSTP-TV ABC 6 ST. PAUL Maine firefighters feted for 75 years of service In late October 1947, residents of this small town on the Blue Hill Peninsula watched as ominous gray smoke rose high into the skies over Mount Desert Island. The summer had been bone dry—the state had only received about half its normal precipitation since the end of June—and a single careless spark might ignite a conflagration closer to home. "The terrible fire that destroyed a greater part of Bar Harbor was visible from many points in Brooklin," recounts a history of the Brooklin Fire Department, and "made the people here realize that some action should be taken." In short order, the townspeople organized nightly fire patrols on key sections of public and private roads. These patrols ultimately led to the formation of the volunteer fire department, which celebrated its 75th anniversary on October 15 with a community barbecue, lobster bake and, perhaps not surprisingly, a cake without candles.
