Flames consumed the house at 216 3rd Avenue, and firefighters learned of the blaze at 4:53 a.m. According to the battalion chief: The first units arrived within four minutes and were met with heavy fire coming from the two-story, wood framed house. First arriving units had fire on the first floor, second floor, and the attic of the structure. Firefighters gave medical assistance to two residents who escaped the fire. One was taken to St. Joe's hospital with minor injuries. Crews deployed multiple hose lines to attack the fire and protect nearby exposure structures. The fire was declared under control at 6:05 a.m. JOLIET PATCH Officials investigating Broughton house fire PHOTO: Fire officials are responding to a house fire on the 200 block of W Main Street in Broughton. VIDEO: Helmet camera footage reveals harrowing firefighting efforts in deadly Oklahoma apartment fire New helmet camera footage obtained by FOX 25 shows a closer look at the battle firefighters had to face during a deadly apartment complex fire October 20 in northwest Oklahoma City. According to the Oklahoma City Fire Department, crews responded to a three alarm fire at the Penn Station apartment complex around 7pm that Friday, seeing smoke billowing from the building miles away. The helmet camera footage showing firefighters spraying water into a unit on the second floor trying to put the fire out, to then actually going into the burning building. The footage also showed a firefighter searching an apartment for anyone inside, to then eventually appearing to show firefighters pulling someone from the rubble. Kristina Allen was among two who were killed from the fire, and officials said a total of 16 people were displaced from the fire. KOKH-TV FOX 25 OKLAHOMA CITY Automatic gas shutoffs could cut San Francisco post-quake fires in half, expert says VIDEO: A UC Berkeley researcher says that automatic gas shutoff devices, like those used in Los Angeles and Japan, could cut the number of post-earthquake fires in half in San Francisco. But the city of San Francisco has yet to embrace shutoff technology, said Charles Scawthorn, an internationally recognized expert on fires after quakes. He says Japan has long relied on gas shutoffs built into gas meters – in part because of the lessons learned from the Kanto earthquake and fire, which killed an estimated 100,000 people. "This was truly hell on earth," Scawthorn said of the 7.9 magnitude quake that hit Tokyo on Sept. 1, 1923. The disaster killed more than 10,000 people outright. But far more, an estimated 80,000 lives, were lost in the 100 fires that broke out in the hours after the initial quake. KNTV NBC 11 SAN JOSE Volunteer fire department in Tennessee proves age is just a number VIDEO: The Tellico Village Fire Department is unique in a few ways. First, they say they serve a unique community of people that is growing in age and growing older. Second, they have one of the fastest response times in the state with an average of 4 minutes, compared to a national average of 6 minutes. The Tellico Village Fire Department is made up of retired volunteers, all of whom are over the age of 50. The median age for these firefighters is 68, about 30 years older than the average. "There hasn't been a single 911 call in the last five years that trained personnel have not shown up at the door to help," Assistant Chief Bill Ballinger said. "That is not the norm and every volunteer fire department across the country. I've seen people park their boat, walk off the golf course in the middle of a round a golf."
