Woman Killed, 2 Firefighters Hurt in Chicago's Hanover Park House Fire One woman died and two firefighters sustained injuries in a fire that erupted at a home Sunday afternoon in suburban Hanover Park, according to authorities. The fire was reported at approximately 3:52 p.m. at a residence in the 7300 block of Thornwood Street, said Fire Chief Eric Fors of the Hanover Park Fire Department. Two children were inside the home at the time of the fire and managed to escape, authorities said. Once crews were able to extinguish the fire, they entered the home and found the woman, who was pronounced dead. The woman who died was identified as Jovenica Valencia, 83, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO 'We couldn't feel our legs': Survivors relive deadly Illinois Central train crash 50 years later The 27th Street station is rarely used these days and the Illinois Central Railroad is no longer in operation. But, it was along these same tracks still used by the Metra Electric Line that 50 years ago, a historic Chicago train crash killed 45 people and injured 331 more. The accident happened after a northbound Illinois Central commuter train overshot its platform at the 27th Street Station, where the Metra Electric line now runs, and proceeded to back up around a bend to allow its passengers to disembark. A second train, following behind on the same track, did not see the train until moments before impact. Survivors said Sunday's service is perhaps the first one to honor all of the victims, survivors and first responders from that day..."And, the rescue workers were phenomenal," Klare said. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR Decatur says goodbye to Fire House 3 Keith Wilson and his siblings were a few of the young family members allowed to roam through Decatur's Fire Station 3 near Fairview Park nearly 30 years ago. "We were here quite often, since we lived on this side of town," he said. The Wilson children's father, the late David Wilson, was a Decatur firefighter who worked at the now retired station. The Wilsons and other firefighters' kids would often visit their parents at the station. "I remember the Coke bottles being in glass bottles," Wilson said. "You obviously don't see them anymore." On Saturday, community members were invited to walk through the historic fire station one last time during the open house. The event was organized by History of the Heartland, a sponsor of community events highlighting historic preservation and stories of Macon County structures and people. WLUC-TV NBC/FOX 6 MARQUETTE EMS, community college in North Carolina launch new program aimed at paramedic recruitment The future of recruitment in emergency services is changing, and Burke County is getting a head start. Burke County EMS and Western Piedmont Community College are partnering to offer the region's first EMS Academy next year, where participants will earn all the credentials they need to to be paramedics. The twist is participants will go through the program on the county's payroll, getting paid for 40 hours a week while they learn the ins and outs of EMS work and get hands-on, field experience, said Burke County EMS Maj. Nikki Hudson. When they finish the program, they'll be first in line to fill positions at Burke County EMS. The entire program comes at no cost to the students, Hudson said. This is the second academy of its kind in the state, as far as Hudson is aware. "We're going to take people that have no EMS credentials but want to get into the field of emergency services and become a paramedic, we're going to put them on payroll and send them to school," Hudson said.
