St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beecher a total loss after fire A fire ripped through St. Paul Lutheran Church in suburban Beecher on Sunday, and the building is believed to be a total loss. Firefighters had actually been called to the building to help an ill patient, when someone noticed the flames. The congregation was holding their annual Oktoberfest in the parking lot when the fire started. One firefighter was hospitalized for heat exhaustion, and three others were treated on the scene. The church was built in 1865 and served as a set for the 2013 Tom Hanks-Jude Law film "Road to Perdition." WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO Home a ‘total loss' following Moline structure fire An investigation is underway to find the cause of a structure fire that happened Saturday evening in Moline. Crews from the Moline Fire Department were called to the 1800 block of 15th Avenue at approximately 6:40 p.m., where they found a "fully involved, three-story, two-family residence with a large amount of fire and smoke showing from the main floor of the structure," a news release says. While in search of occupants, firefighters discovered the blaze made its way into the attic space, through the walls. According to the fire department, the "quick advancement of fire throughout the walls and into the attic space created difficulty in containing this fire," which they say was under control in approximately three hours. KLJB-TV FOX 18 DAVENPORT Farm animals run rampant on I-55 in Normal after semi-truck rollover PHOTOS: Farm animals ran rampant Sunday morning as the semi-truck they were travelling in rolled over on Interstate 55 around 7:30 a.m. The Normal Fire Department responded to the call at milepost 162 where goats and sheep were running up and down the interstate, medians, and ditches. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Danville: City to study fire stations, downtown parking Needed repairs at the city's downtown parking garage and the training tower at Fire Station 3 on Griffin Street is causing the city to look more in depth at parking needs and the fire station structures and locations. The Danville City Council's Public Works Committee this week recommended authorizing a budget amendment to the city's fiscal year 2021-2022 parks and public property budget for professional assessments at the downtown parking garage due to identified structural and maintenance issues, and also a fire station facility evaluation. At least $121,000 in additional costs are estimated for a downtown parking demand, supply and garage re-use analysis; conceptual design and cost analysis of garage modification options; parking garage modification and improvement design; fire station facility evaluations; and 10 percent contingency. Funding comes from the city's general fund reserves. DANVILLE COMMERCIAL NEWS North Park Fire Department prepares for fire safety open house The North Park Fire Department is gearing up for a fire prevention open house. Fire Prevention Coordinator Matt Hehn says the goal is to teach kids how to prevent or deal with fires. Last year, the station could not invite kids to come out because of COVID-19, but this year, they will have the event set up outside. The department will have a static display, a K-9 demonstration and kids will get to get to check out a fire truck. Hehn said the goal is to prepare kids for any emergency they might come across at home. "They can't get educated enough. I mean, it's really important to get out and reach out to kids on the safety of fire and all that," said Hehn. "It's huge to have these events every year, to make sure they understand the proper techniques of fire prevention, and what to do in case of a fire." The Fire Prevention Open House will be October 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Fire destroys historic church in Illinois VIDEO/PHOTOS: A famed church in the Far South suburbs went up in flames Sunday afternoon. Around 2 p.m., nearly a dozen fire departments responded to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Beecher following reports of a massive blaze. Fire crews eventually extinguished the fire but the historic church was heavily damaged. Officials told WGN the fire may have started in the steeple. The church was hosting its annual Octoberfest. Todd Maehl told WGN News he was driving into town when he detoured down Church Street and noticed flames. "It was just an awful sight to see," he said. Beecher resident Zachery Wehling said he lives down the road. "I've seen it many times. My grandparents are buried there," he said. "It's really sad seeing the church like this." The Lutheran Church has deep roots in the Beecher community. WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO Virginia firefighters testing out new lifesaving technology Developed by the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA JPL), POINTER is groundbreaking new first responder tracking and location technology that allows first responders to pinpoint their colleagues more precisely in emergencies. "This is a very exciting technology that adds another dimension to firefighters' situational awareness," said Ed Chow, POINTER program manager. Only FOX 5 was there for the first live operation test ever with firefighters from Fairfax, Loudoun, and Stafford County. "We're trying to improve the safety of the first responder firefighters," William Stout, Program Manager for Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology. This new, 3D technology uses magnetoquasistatic fields to locate firefighters up to 229 feet on scene. There are existing tracking technologies that use GPS, but often fail inside buildings and when there's heavy smoke. WTTG-TV FOX 5 WASHINGTON, D.C. Chuck Norris: Some lessons from 9/11 seem hard for us to remember With lessons learned from 9/11 so widely, recently and painfully recounted, the story of suffering and loss that continue for more than 100,000 fellow Americans must not be forgotten. We cannot lose sight of it as if seeing it through a rear-view mirror, fading in the distance. We need to keep these fellow citizens front and center. According to Time magazine, the World Trade Center Health Program, founded in 2010 as part of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, serves 112,042 members nationwide. Their membership includes 64,429 general responders, 17,031 firefighters and 30,582 survivors. Of these, 65,307 members have at least one certified debilitating health condition and remain badly in need of care. Some, even with treatment, will never recover. THE EAGLE Fire-Rescue in Texas launches new pilot program to staff ambulances more efficiently VIDEO: The pandemic has put more burden on first responders answering emergency medical calls. Dallas Fire-Rescue is hoping to cut down on burnout, response times and overtime with a new approach to staffing its ambulances. A new pilot program will run for six months. At first, DFR will use internal staff to determine if the model works. If so, they will begin recruiting and hiring single-role paramedics. According to the fire chief, the department averages 210,000 calls for EMS service every year. He says the numbers keep going up, especially during the pandemic. It's spreading EMS resources thin. "We have to think outside of the box see how we can be more efficient with the resources that we have," said DFR Chief Dominique Artis. That's how the Single-Role Paramedic Pilot Program got into motion. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS COVID-19 origins: Why the search for the source is vital No clear culprit. No smoking gun.
