Grand Tower fire chief stepping down after 35 years A southern Illinois fire chief is stepping down after 35 years of serving the community. Dennis Wright is a long-time member with the Tower Rock Fire Protection District in Grand Tower. He's been chief for the last 33 years there and plans on trading his chief helmet to become a volunteer fighting fires once again. He has seen many fires, floods and service calls in his time at the station. He said he will miss his time serving there, but will remain active on the department and in the community still. "It kind of gets you in the heart knowing that people actually do recognize about what you've done over the years. Trying to keep the town protected and trying to keep good equipment for the men to use, be safe," Wright said. A ceremony will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the fire station in Grand Tower to honor Wright. The fire station also will be dedicated in his name. KFVS-TV CBS 12 CAPE GIRARDEAU Breaking gender barriers: Haley Stevenson will become Galesburg's 1st female firefighter The City of Galesburg is about to reach an important milestone. Haley Stevenson on Monday, May 2 will become the first female firefighter in the history of the Galesburg Fire Department. The Galesburg native and Carl Sandburg College alumna will be sworn in Monday morning during a ceremony at City Hall, according to the fire department. "This is an achievement that is long overdue," Chief Randy Hovind said in the department's announcement. "We are very pleased to have Firefighter Stevenson joining our team and know that this is the first step of many towards accomplishing levels of diversity that truly represent our community." WQAD-TV ABC 8 MOLINE Multiple homes in Peoria damaged by fire A fire that damaged multiple homes is currently under investigation by the Peoria Fire Department. Tuesday around 10:00 p.m., firefighters responded to the area of S. Tonti Cr. and S. Laramie St. There, flames and smoke were coming from an unattached garage. The garage was near three other homes. Crews worked to put out the fire in the garage to prevent damage to the nearby structures. All of the homes were evacuated. One cat was rescued and no one was hurt. The Red Cross is assisting two residents. Two homes were damaged on the outside, one home had moderate smoke, fire, and water damage on the interior. The garage where the fire started and the car inside was deemed a total loss. Another car was damaged in the blaze. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Surveillance video shows arson suspect lighting cars ablaze in Evanston Evanston police are looking for someone seen on video pouring accelerant on two cars and then lighting them on fire earlier this month. Police were called to the 2300-block of Sherman Avenue about 8:15 p.m. April 19 for a car fire and found a Nissan and Toyota on fire. The front portions of both cars were engulfed in flames, police said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze. A third vehicle, a Honda, sustained apparent heat damage. No one was injured. Police later learned the incident was captured on surveillance video, which shows a suspect approach the vehicles on foot, pour accelerant on the hoods and then light the cars on fire. The suspect then runs away. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Fire causes major damage to vacant factory in North Carolina, fire department says VIDEO: An overnight fire caused major damage at a vacant factory building in Hickory, according to the Hickory Fire Department. The department said firefighters responded after midnight to the 1600 block of 11th Avenue NE where a large fire could be seen coming from the building. Fire officials said no injuries were reported, but damages "are considered major." Channel 9's Dave Faherty spoke with fire investigators who said the damage is so extensive it may be difficult to determine what caused the fire. Neighbors told Faherty the old frame shop has been closed for years. Channel 9 also learned power was not running to the building. WSOC-TV ABC 9 CHARLOTTE How priceless items of golf history were saved from inside Michigan country club as it burned VIDEO: Priceless items of golf history were saved from inside the Oakland Hills Country Club as it burned in February. The fire caused $80 million in damage. Most of the building and priceless pieces of memorabilia and art were destroyed -- but some items were saved. For the first time Local 4 is showing footage from inside the clubhouse. Approximately 17 fire departments were called in to assist Bloomfield Township on the morning of Feb. 17, including the Southfield Fire Department. On that day, Lt. Zac McKee and his teams suited up and headed out knowing there was a ton of history inside the clubhouse. "When we left our station and we got to 12 and Telegraph, you could see the smoke blowing across telegraph," Lt. McKee said. The century-old wooden structure was in flames with Lt. McKee, Firefighter Michael Petry, Firefighter/medic Nate Herr and Firefighter Patrick Kerr arrived. There was discussion en route of what might be inside. WDIV-TV NBC 4 DETROIT 2 Colorado towns will try 4th of July drone shows due to fire risk Phones have been busy at Hire UAV Pros in Denver. "We had probably somewhere in the order of 300 to 400 requests for the 4th of July," Graham Hill, the business' owner, said. His company does synchronized drone light shows like the ones you might see at the Super Bowl. Now, towns in fire-prone areas are reaching out to inquire about a replacement for traditional fireworks. "Post Marshall Fire, it's been much more about replacing the entertainment, not just this year but looking for an alternative for the foreseeable future," Hill said. "We're already working on doing four shows in four different locations over 4th of July weekend." There is some precedent for the worry. Last year's Christmas show put on by the Douglas County commissioners caused spot fires at every location where those fireworks were launched. KUSA-TV NBC 9 DENVER This fire truck raced to the Hindenburg disaster; now it's parked in a Virginia barn Tom Herman is a collector with an addiction. The career firefighter first got into collecting as a teen. "I got into collecting fire memorabilia and just kind of never stopped," Herman, now known as an authority on almost all things fire service related, said. "I don't know how this happened but it just kind of morphed over a 40-year time period." The list of Herman's collectibles spans a 120-page inventory and includes badges, helmets, fire alarms, and fire extinguishers. It also includes a collection of fire trucks. "In 1976, I bought our first antique fire truck," Herman said. "Right now, we are at about 18. Just think about all the responses that they made to fires, accidents, and what these trucks have seen over the years." He spends years, in some cases, disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling the old trucks. WTVR-TV CBS 6 RICHMOND PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
