Granville Fire Chief celebrated for three decades of service Granville's longtime Fire Chief has retired after 30 years of service to the community. Ronald Campbell was honored by the village Saturday for three decades of service, 24 of them as Chief. Campbell will take on an advisory role as Chief of Staff of the Granville-Hennepin Fire District to oversee new policy and procedure roll out for the departments. Granville's Assistant Chief, Quentin Buffington said Campbell was ready to retire a year ago, but held off due to assistant Chief Billy Ossala's retirement. Additionally, he said Campbell had decided to stay on in an advisory role to oversee the equipping of the district's new command vehicle during the past year. PUTNAM COUNTY RECORD City Of Chicago Employees To Be Required To Get COVID-19 Vaccine In Chicago all city workers are now being told they must get the COVID-19 vaccine by Oct. 15, but it's unclear what happens to those who don't do it. Mayor Lori Lightfoot made the mandate very clear in a tweet saying, "We must take every step necessary and at our disposal to keep everyone in our city safe and healthy. That's why all City of Chicago employees are required to be fully vaccinated, effective October 15. Get your vax, folks." The madate applies to more than 30,000 city workers, including police officers. Their union opposes the mandate. "The pathway has been cleared for companies to legally madate it, is a really big issue," said Andy Challenger with Challenger, Gray and Christmas, a career coaching firm. He said the mandate is starting to look like the norm. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Firefighters called for 'possible lightning strike,' which caused apartment building fire in Peoria Batallion Chief Michael Hughes reports a possible lightning strike was what the call originally came in as. According to the press release, crews reported a high voltage power line arcing against a six-unit apartment at approximately 6:22 p.m. Firefighters search and evacuated the structure, then called Ameren to help disconnect power to the building. Before the power could be cut, fires started in the Attic and the back of the apartments. A fire investigator was called to the scene and determined that the electrical fire caused an estimated $100,000 worth of damages. Four of the apartment's occupants that were displaced by the fire are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Fire At Old Neighborhood Grill In Evanston Began In Kitchen, Workers Said A kitchen fire at Old Neighborhood Grill Tuesday evening quickly required an emergency response after restaurant staff could not contain the flames, according to city officials. Evanston fire crews were dispatched to the restaurant on the 2900 block of Central Street at around 5 p.m. Workers told firefighters the fire began behind a stove and was filling up the kitchen area with smoke. Due to the amount of personnel required to extinguish the flames, authorities called in assistance from neighboring fire departments to help cover other emergencies in the Evanston area. Firefighters were able to put out the blaze within 15 minutes, according to a news release. EVANSTON PATCH Chicago firefighters rescue woman who drove her car into Lake Michigan A woman drove her car off Lake Shore Drive and wound up partially submerged in Lake Michigan. KWTV-DT CBS 9 OKLAHOMA CITY Massachusetts firefighters screened for skin cancer during hospital-sponsored event When he joined the Worcester Fire Department 2½ years ago, Heath Tisdale knew that he'd be at higher risk than the general public of getting cancer. His chances of dying from the disease would also be greater. Did it give him pause about his career? "Not one bit," he said. "Not at all." Tisdale, Firefighter Casey Gates and Capt. Paul McCaffrey all came from the McKeon Road fire station to Polar Park Tuesday for a free skin cancer screening offered by DetecTogether and UMass Memorial Medical Center. All three left with no need for further screening, but about 20% of the firefighters who were screened were going to need a second look at suspect skin spots. Some will undergo biopsies next week, a minor procedure for additional testing. TELEGRAM & GAZETTE Louisiana first responders tap new technology to help with flooding PHOTO: First responders on the Northshore hope to use newly developed technology to monitor flooding in real-time. The St. Tammany Parish Fire District No. 4 partnered with the city of Mandeville to place a solar-powered sensor at the intersection of Carondelet and Lakeshore Drive. That sensor records the depth of water in the area. Assistant Fire Chief Clint Ory told WDSU that the technology could help local leaders respond more proactively during storms. "The idea is that, from a response standpoint, even before we start to get the calls that it's flooding, we would be able to either alert the people who live in that area, or we would be able to start sending resources that way to help get them out before water enters a structure," Ory said. He said the first sensor was placed in a flood-prone area to test the system's effectiveness. WDSU-TV NBC 6 NEW ORLEANS California artist creating the art that connects a community At first glance, Napa artist Sam Tubiolo seems a quiet, unassuming man with a shy smile. Hidden beneath that façade, however, is a powerhouse of monumental artistic creativity and technical expertise. "I wanted to be an architect when I was in school, but all the math was daunting," he said with a soft laugh. "I turned to art, although I didn't know how to do it." He graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology having learned drawing and printmaking before receiving his MFA from the University of New Mexico and his secondary teaching credential from San Francisco State University. He worked as a cartographer and illustrator draftsman for archologists in Colorado prior to becoming a sculptor, public artist and a university and community college instructor in New Mexico and California. NAPA VALLEY REGISTER - METERED SITE New Evidence That The Florida Condo That Collapsed Had Extensive Corrosion Video released by a team of federal investigators shows more evidence of extensive corrosion and overcrowded concrete reinforcement in a Miami-area condominium that collapsed in June, killing 98 people. The National Institute of Standards and Technology also announced Wednesday it will conduct a five-pronged investigation into the Champlain Towers South collapse, which will be led by Judith Mitrani-Reiser. She is a Cuban-born engineer who grew up in Miami. "We are going into this with an open mind and will examine all hypotheses that might explain what caused this collapse," Mitrani-Reiser said. "Having a team with experience across a variety of disciplines, including structural and geotechnical engineering, materials, evidence collection, modeling and more, will ensure a thorough investigation."
