| Quincy Fire Department reports six fires already this holiday season Since the 10th Annual Keep the Wreaths Red Campaign started on Nov. 24, there have been six structure fires in Quincy, according to Assistant Fire Chief James Pioch. For every fire that happens, firefighters have to change one bulb on the wreath, that's displayed on the Quincy Fire Department, from red to white. Pioch said we have already surpassed the number of fires we had to his point last year. Three of those fires were kitchen related. "Never turn your back on anything you're cooking. Don't leave the room, make sure you're attending it," Pioch said. "Don't turn the heat too high especially on oil or grease because grease has a lower flammability, and once it hits a certain temperature, it'll catch fire. Whether or not it's a flame, whether or not it's a gas, or an electric stove, once it hits a certain temperature, it will catch fire and catch your cabinets on fire." WGEM-TV NBC/CW+/FOX 10 QUINCY Woman Rescued From Fox River After Car Crashes Into Frigid Water A 62-year-old woman was pulled from the Fox River in suburban St. Charles Wednesday after her vehicle left the roadway and landed in the partially-frozen river. According to police, officers were called to the scene in the 200 block of North Riverside Avenue just after noon for reports of a car plunging into the Fox River near that address. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders discovered that a four-door sedan had come to rest in the river, approximately 25 feet from the shoreline. The vehicle was partially submerged, with part of the passenger compartment above the surface of the water, according to authorities. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO Decatur firefighters shop with kids for annual Shop With a Fireman effort VIDEO: Members of Decatur Firefighters Local 505 shopped with local kids for the annual Shop with a Fireman effort. The firefighter's union shopped with 19 Decatur kids at Walmart North on Wednesday night. Last year, members weren't able to shop with kids because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers said they were happy to be able to shop with the kids once again. "It's just so nice to be back shopping with them," said Ross Garman, Local 505 member. "We get to kind of play Santa." The money used to shop for the kids comes from Local 505 members. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR 2-year-old left at Chicago's South Side fire station A 2-year old boy was left at a South Side fire station Monday, but the person who dropped off the child isn't protected under Illinois' Safe Haven Law, which applies only during an infant's first 30 days of life. The child was taken to a Chicago Fire Department station near 67th Street and Dorchester Avenue at about 3:45 p.m. The individual who dropped off the child was met by CFD officials, who transported the boy to Comer Children's Hospital for evaluation, authorities said. The child was found to be in good condition, and was released into the care of a family friend appointed by Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. | VIDEO: Building that once housed adult day care in Mississippi goes up in flames A massive fire destroyed a vacant building in South Jackson. The fire was reported about 9 p.m. Wednesday at what was once the ANCOR Adult Daycare on Robinson Road. The flames were so intense that part of the building collapsed. Deputy Chief Cleotha Sanders said the business was not operating and there was no power to the building. Firefighters stayed at the scene overnight putting out hot spots, Sanders said. The cause of the fire has not been determined. No injuries were reported. WAPT-TV ABC 16 JACKSON EMS not considered ‘essential' in South Carolina, but proposed bill would change that The pandemic has shown how critical emergency medical services are across the country. But in South Carolina and most other states, EMS is not classified as an "essential service," as law enforcement and fire services are. While those services have been part of the US in some fashion since colonial times, EMS is much younger, established in many areas of the country in the 1970s, according to South Carolina EMS Association Advocacy and Legislative Chair Steven McDade. But since then, McDade said EMS has become a necessity in every community. "You can look at it from just an everyday thing, where you can call for a heart attack or a stroke or a car wreck, or look at the impact that EMS has had during this pandemic. They, really, we've been the ones, frontline, combatting that," he said. The district is incorporating virtual reality into its academic programs and pathways, including in the Fire Science program at Fern Creek High School. Students use VR headsets to experience what it's like to enter a burning building. Fern Creek firefighters provide weekly class time and training for students. "They're able to get training done now, while they are in school, that would take them 6 months to complete after they graduated," said Nathan Mulvey, chief of the Fern Creek Fire Department. "So it's pretty exciting." Since there is also a shortage of EMTs, organizers are trying to develop an EMT program within the school's Fire Science program. WDRB-TV FOX 41 LOUISVILLE One small step for Maryland county, one giant leap for volunteer firefighter Christopher Williams is still in disbelief that he's going to be an astronaut. "It's still almost a little bit surreal, something that you've dreamed about your whole life and now getting the opportunity to do, I feel so lucky and honored to have the chance to do this and to be part of the team," he told MyMCM. NASA announced its latest astronauts on Dec. 6 with Williams and nine other candidates being selected from a field of more than 12,000 applicants, according to a press release from NASA. Since the original Mercury Seven space mission in 1959, there have only been 360 astronauts selected by NASA, including Williams' cohort. "Becoming an astronaut has been sort of a dream of mine ever since I was a little kid," Williams said. MY MONTGOMERY COUNTY MEDIA Florida Task Force 3 honored for Surfside condo rescue mission Dec. 8, 2021, is officially known as Florida Urban Search & Rescue Task Force 3 Day in Hillsborough County in honor of the first responders that jumped into action after this summer's deadly Surfside condo collapse. In the wake of the tragedy that claimed 98 lives, some 75 men and women across the Tampa Bay area were dispatched to South Florida to assist with search and rescue efforts. The elite group, led by Andrew Capelleti of Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and Captain Brian Eichholz from Tampa Fire Rescue, consisted of members of both agencies as well as St. Pete Fire Rescue. "The gallant first responders of Florida Urban Search & Rescue Task Force 3 worked side by side, day and night, doing everything they could for the victims of this terrible tragedy and their grieving families," Hillsborough County Commissioner Harry Cohen said during Wednesday's meeting.
