Chicago Fire Official: One person dead in Austin apartment fire One person is dead after a fire in a West Side apartment building Wednesday morning. Chicago Fire Deputy District Chief Kelly Burns said the fire started around 10 a.m. in a two-story apartment building in the 1600 block of North Mayfield Avenue in the Austin neighborhood. When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy smoke coming from the building, and began a search, finding one person dead on the first floor, according to Burns. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Maurice O'Neal, 70. "I was really sad. I've known him since the third grade, and he was super welcoming, and so nice, and he always said hi to me whenever he saw me. He even knew my nephews' names. Yeah, this is really sad," Koya Scott said. "Very nice guy. He would sit in his van every day, and just listen to music." WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Portage Park Firehouse Memorial Honors Fallen Firefighter MaShawn Plummer A Year After His Death First responders crowded into a Portage park firehouse Wednesday to pay tribute to fallen firefighter MaShawn Plummer on the first anniversary of his death. Plummer, 30, died last Dec. 21 from injuries he suffered battling a Belmont Cragin fire. He had just marked his one-year anniversary with the Fire Department. His coworkers at Engine 94, 5758 W. Grace St., honored his legacy with a community-funded bronze memorial that was unveiled last month and displayed Wednesday outside the firehouse at a bell-ringing event to commemorate Plummer on the anniversary of his death. Over $15,000 was raised from citywide firehouses, individual donations and a t-shirt sale that paid for the statue, said Engine 94 firefighter Robert "Bob" Brady, who spearheaded the memorial efforts. BLOCK CLUB CHICAGO Quincy Fire Department gives Christmas tree fire prevention tips According to the National Fire Protection Agency, an average of 160 home structure fires began with Christmas trees every year between 2015 and 2019. Quincy firefighters said the best way to keep from becoming a victim of one of these fires is to make sure, if you have a real tree, that it is well watered at all times. Firefighter Ryan Willingham said real trees need to be watered every day, with a good indicator of a hydrated tree being some water left in the tree stand. Willingham said a tree's placement can also determine it's fire risk. He said nearby furniture and curtains can become a fire hazard. WGEM-TV NBC 19 QUINCY PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters battle two fires in one day at Texas condo complex VIDEO: The smoke detectors woke up Gina Harris around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. There was a smell of smoke in her unit. She called 911 when she couldn't get the detectors to stop. Soon, she was standing in the street watching part of her condo complex burn. Dallas Fire-Rescue said the fire at Parkway Quarter Condominiums, off the Dallas North Tollway between Keller Springs and Arapaho, was out by 5 a.m. Investigators stuck around to determine a cause and some crews stayed on the scene to put out any hot spots. Investigators ruled the fire was electrical and had started in a wall, and DFR crews had cleared out by around noon. Harris was allowed back in her condo. She found water damage, but the fire stopped at her next door neighbor's unit. Suddenly, a familiar smell and sight seeped in. FIRE ENGINEERING Hazmat team cleans up gallons of diesel fuel from train derailment in Tennessee VIDEO: Tuesday's train derailment in Collegedale closed roads and created challenges for cleanup crews and motorists. Ten train cars and three locomotives derailed when the train crashed into a truck carrying a concrete beam. It caused a massive diesel spill at the crossing on College Drive East and Apison Pike. Two people who were injured in the crash are out of the hospital. The area looks a lot different than it did just 24 hours ago. The wreckage has been moved out of the way, new tracks have been laid and Norfolk Southern trains are running again at reduced speeds. When the Norfolk Southern train collided with a concrete beam Tuesday afternoon, it caused the locomotive and 10 boxcars to derail spilling gallons of diesel. Hamilton County Hazardous Materials Officer C.J. Davis said there was about 3700 gallons of diesel in the locomotives. Her handler, Jerry Johnson of the Raleigh County Community Emergency Response Team, reached out to the company, Invisible Fence, to get a free mask kit for Beckley Fire Department, through a program called Project Breathe. "They will donate to any fire department a set of oxygen masks, large medium and small," said Johnson. Johnson said the masks fit dogs, cats and even some other animals. They are specially sized and designed to deliver oxygen to pets who are injured during emergencies like house fires. Beckley Fire Department Lt. Chris Graham said the masks will make a difference in the quality of care that pets receive. WVNS-TV CBS/FOX/MYNETWORKTV 59 LEWISBURG Air Force Grounds Fleet of B-2 Stealth Bombers After Malfunction Leads to Emergency Landing and Fire The Air Force has grounded its entire fleet of B-2 stealth bombers following an emergency landing and fire earlier this month, and none of the strategic aircraft will perform flyovers at this years' college bowl games. A bomber experienced an in-flight malfunction on Dec. 10, forcing it to make an emergency landing at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, where it caught fire. The fire was extinguished and there were no injuries. The standdown is significant in that there are fewer than 20 stealth bombers in the entire fleet and the aircraft provides, along with the B-52 Stratofortress, the air leg of the nation's nuclear triad. The B-2 has been regularly deployed to the Indo-Pacific and more recently to Europe as a show of force. During the standdown the entire fleet will be inspected, 509th Bomb Wing spokeswoman Air Force Master Sgt. Beth Del Vecchio said. KNBC-TV NBC 4 LOS ANGELES PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
