Vacant house fire extinguished in Cahokia Heights A three-alarm fire overnight in Cahokia Heights destroyed one home and heavily damaged another. Multiple fire crews arrived to the scene located on Mousette Lane just off route 157 a little before 3:00 a.m. where a vacant house fire spread to a neighboring home. Due to weather conditions, the intensity of the fire, and staffing issues, the fire quickly grew to three alarms. Eventually, six departments came to the scene to help. Camp Jackson Fire Department's Deputy Chief James Boyd spoke about the severity of the fire. "It was in the second home when we arrived, we were able to hold it to the attic area and get a stop on it there." KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS Rockdale Firefighters Battle Blaze It took several firefighters from multiple agencies to put out Wednesday afternoon's garage fire in the small community of Rockdale. The fire broke out around 4:35 p.m. in the 200 block of Davis Avenue. Firefighters from Rockdale, Troy, Lockport, Channahon, East Joliet, Minooka, North West Homer, and Plainfield were all on the scene, according to Rockdale Police Chief Robert Dykstra. Dykstra said that nobody was hurt and firefighters contained the fire to a two-car garage. One car in the garage was a total loss, while the car in the driveway was saved. He said that two Illinois State Police troopers who were in Rockdale for training saw the fire and called it in themselves after determining that nobody was inside the garage. The firefighters managed to stop the flames from spreading to the house, Dykstra said. JOLIET PATCH Macomb Fire Department begins Be Alarmed! program to promote fire safety All across the Tri-States, there's been an uptick in structure fires, but Macomb Fire Department is taking the next step to ensure safety. MFD has partnered with the Office of the State Fire Marshal and non-profit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance to bring fire prevention education into your home. As part of the Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation Program, Macomb firefighters will install up-to-date smoke alarms in homes and at no cost. Additionally, firefighters will provide homeowners with fire prevention education materials such as an escape plan. Fire Captain Nate Livermore said smoke alarms are top priority for fire safety. "Early detection gives you the most time to get out of the house before things get bad," Livermore said. Smoke alarms will be installed in every sleeping area, outside sleeping areas and on every level of the home. WGEM-TV NBC/CW PLUS/FOX 10 QUINCY PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Crews battle roaring nursery fire in Florida; HAZMAT monitoring smoke Crews are on scene at a massive fire in Kissimmee. The blaze is located at a plant nursery off of Poinciana Boulevard and was first reported at 2 a.m. The name of the company is Nursery Supplies Inc. Two acres worth of pellets holding plastic planters are burning and crews are using 4,500 gallons of water per minute to douse the flames. Crews also say there were propane tanks not too far from the area. HAZMAT crews from Osceola County, and Orange County are monitoring the air to determine if this smoke is any danger to residents. "We've got remote monitoring set up and we're not yet getting any signal that would cause us to call for an evacuation, but that could change," Osceola Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Jon Haskett said. "If there is an evacuation, it would be due to the smoke and carbon monoxide off the fire." WESH-TV NBC 2 DAYTONA BEACH Related Photos: Crews respond to inferno after plastic planters catch fire at plant nursery in Osceola County Wisconsin fire chiefs making history VIDEO: Sharon and Dewayne Smoots are making history and breaking barriers. They are considered the first husband and wife duo to hold two of the highest-ranking positions within the Milwaukee Fire Department. Dewayne joined the Milwaukee Fire Department 35 years ago after a long career with the state's justice department. "When I came on, we didn't have any Black teams at all. And that, for it being now, three assistant chiefs are African-American. And I got to share this with my wife," said Dewayne. Sharon joined the fire department in 2003. She was the first Black woman to do so. "I graduated in August, became a firefighter, eventually moved up through the ranks last year... It let me know and show others that this is possible," said Sharon. WISN-TV ABC 12 MILWAUKEE New North Carolina fire rescue truck seeks to further protect firefighters from dangerous chemicals VIDEO: One of the leading causes of death for firefighters is cancer, often caused by exposure to toxic chemicals that they may face while responding to a fire. Harmful chemicals put firefighters at an additional risk when they're serving the community, but recent initiatives are hoping to protect them from these dangers. Station 12 of New Hanover County Fire Rescue replaced their 20-year-old truck with a new one that includes features that can make a big difference after fighting fires. The new truck contains a special storage compartment on the outside that is used to transport contaminated gear back to the station after a fire. The firefighters are required to place their turnout gear in the unit after each fire, before entering the clean apparatus cab. WECT-TV NBC 6 WILMINGTON ‘Walk for Dustin' travels through Tennessee raising awareness to firefighter's mental health Firefighters across Tennessee are walking hundreds of miles to raise awareness for the mental health struggles first responders face and push legislation in the state capitol. The walk comes as studies from 2022 found firefighters have higher suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) risks. Studies also found suicide happens twice as often with firefighters compared to the general community, and PTSD occurs in 57% of firefighters. On the two-day, 27.3-mile walk, departments will carry the 303 Project flag. The 303 Project is non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the impact of mental health disorders and their results related to PTSD, including suicide and substance abuse among first responders. "PTSD is definitely something that makes you feel very alone," said Colton Young, vice president of the Wilson County Firefighters Association. WKRN-TV ABC 2 NASHVILLE On this day in 1968, first 911 call made in Alabama, the emergency system fueled by shocking murder The nation's first 911 emergency call was placed by an Alabama state politician on this day in history, Feb. 16, 1968. The landmark moment came four years after the shocking unreported murder of a New York City woman proved to many Americans the need for a standard and easy-to-use system to call for emergency assistance. "Senator Rankin Fite completed the first 911 call made in the United States in Haleyville, Alabama," writes NENA.org, the website of the National Emergency Number Association. "The serving telephone company was then Alabama Telephone Company. This Haleyville 911 system is still in operation today." Before the advent of 911, people had to make a direct call to local emergency services, a nearby police station or a firehouse, most likely after sifting through the pages of the phone book — a large tome in major metropolitan areas.
