Fire severely damages four boats at Chicago's Far South Side marina A fire Wednesday at Pier 11 Marina on the city's Far South Side caused serious damage to at least four boats. As CBS 2's Andrew Ramos reported, crews spent hours putting out flames that officials on the ground are now saying resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. We are told that altogether, those damages will most likely surpass $1.1 million. It was around 10 a.m. when crews with the Chicago and Dolton fire departments responded to the marina at 826 E. 138th St. – along the Little Calumet River on the southern boundary of the city. Fire crews found three boats on fire. As firefighters attempted to put out the flames, the fire spread to a fourth boat. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Like Peoria Police, the fire department works to add more women It's common to assume every firefighter in Peoria is a man, especially with only four women in the department, but the agency is working to change that. Savannah Bushman is a few months into the job. At 24, she's Peoria's newest female firefighter. "We've had a couple tours and you can see the little girls... just notice that you're a woman and do a double take," said Bushman. "It's been super welcoming. They don't reach for something to help me out. It's like I'm just one of the guys," said Bushman. Out of about 170 firefighters, she's one of the four women who puts on heavy gear and trains to fight fires. She's also the chief's niece. "When I was looking into this, I kind of thought, ‘I don't know if I'll be able to do this because of the physicality it takes," said Bushman. WEEK-TV NBC 25 PEORIA Bloomington Fire Department responds to oil fire at Beer Nuts factory VIDEO: The Bloomington Fire Department responded to an oil fire at Beer Nuts at approximately 7:21 a.m. Wednesday. According to a Bloomington Fire press release, Firefighters received a call in the kitchen area at the building near Robinson and Washington Streets. Upon arrival, fire crews observed smoke coming out from the roof. Firefighters located the fire in an oil kettle on the second floor. Fire crews determined water would not be safe to use, and decided to contain the fire with dry chemical extinguishers. The fire was brought under control at 7:38 a.m. Dog dies in ‘total loss' house fire Wednesday morning A part of Washington Street was closed while fire crews were on the scene. No one was injured during this incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Boone County first responders urge awareness on the roads Traffic accidents are not a new problem in stateline communities, but a local fire chief said that driver awareness is also a major issue. There is currently foggy weather and slippery road conditions, but Boone County Fire Protection District #2 Chief Brian Kunce said that is not completely to blame. "It just amazes me the disregard of emergency vehicles or just paying attention where you're going," Kunce said. "It's just unbelievable and it's getting worse." Boone County Fire was responding to a medical call Wednesday morning with their lights and sirens on when a vehicle blew through the stop sign in front of them. It happened again at the next intersection. This lengthens their response time. "What if it's going to be your family member or friend that we're responding to, and we get into an auto accident because people aren't paying attention," Kunce said. WTVO-TV ABC 17 ROCKFORD Peoria Fire's ‘Keep the Wreath Red' campaign ends The Peoria Fire Department's annual fire awareness campaign concluded with some trends showing a downward swing. The "Keep the Wreath Red" campaign places wreaths at every fire station in December. When a fire happens, a red bulb is swapped out for a white one. Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger said the city had 24 incidents in December, about the same as last year. "We'd rather that number be zero, and so that's the ultimate goal. But the harsh reality is that it will probably never be that," he said. But when it comes to property damages, it decreased by 50 percent to $400,000. Last year, estimated losses were more than $800,000. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

PHOTOS: Driver plows into fire truck on interstate in Connecticut A driver crashed into a fire truck on Interstate 91 south in Windsor Locks on Wednesday morning. Public safety dispatchers confirmed to Channel 3 that a Windsor Locks Fire Department vehicle was involved in the collision just before 4 a.m. State police said the fire truck had been parked in the right and right center lanes right before exit 38. Its crew was there for a prior crash. Troopers said 58-year-old Gloria Keefe of Suffield was driving in the right center lane and struck the truck. Keefe needed to be transported to St. Francis Hospital for minor injuries. The fire truck was unoccupied at the time of the collision, so no firefighters were hurt. Keefe was found to be at fault, according to state police. She was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions and failure to move over or slow down for an emergency vehicle. WFSB-TV CBS 3 HARTFORD Texas firefighter suits back up after having leg amputated from on-duty accident VIDEO: After losing his leg while responding to an accident on I-45, Centerville volunteer firefighter Colton Adams has checked off yet another box on his road to recovery and normalcy. Adams and his fellow firefighter Clint Franklin were struck and injured by a vehicle nearly seven months ago. Adams was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Temple where he was later released and still continues rehabilitation to this day. Franklin was also taken to the hospital by air ambulance but was later treated and released the same day of the incident. Determined not to let anything deter him from doing what he loves, Adams suited up, oxygen tank and all for the first time since his accident. In a video shared by the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department Adams is seen walking and training outside the fire station as his colleagues support him from a distance. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN 'It looked like a battlefield': Firefighters who battled deadly New York fire reflect a year later VIDEO: One year after New York City's deadliest fire in decades, the firefighters who responded to the Twin Parks North West apartment complex on Jan. 9, 2022 are sharing their stories. "It was a fire that you probably respond to once in a career," said Jeffrey Facinelli, a battalion chief at the FDNY's 18th Battalion. "We were dealing with so many worst case scenarios," said FDNY Capt. John Hunt. "It looked like a battlefield." Hunt was among the first to arrive at the Bronx building, alongside the crews of Engine 48 and Ladder 56. They encountered smoke spilling out of windows, before heading inside to fight the fire. "It's almost like a tornado that you're going into," said Hunt. "Very acrid, thick smoke that's stuck right to your face inside, right to the thermal imaging camera to the point where I couldn't see." NEWS 12 THE BRONX Pennsylvania teen develops boards to help first responders communicate with people with disabilities VIDEO: A Delaware County teenager is hoping to change the way first responders interact with people with disabilities by providing them with a new tool. Jessica Smith, 19, has spent the last few years designing police communication boards, which are laminated pieces of paper to help an officer and a person who may not understand them to get on the same page. "They aren't trained well enough to deal with people with disabilities and I wanted to make these boards to start a change," said Jessica, who makes the boards with pictures and easy phrases like 'when is your birthday' or 'scared.' It's based on a board-making program the teen has used her entire life. "I care because I personally have autism and I've had some instances with the police, none of them were too bad," said Jesscia. Still, she thought the interactions could have gone better. WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA With AED loan program, Iowa fire department hopes to equip citizens for emergency response VIDEO: Having a defibrillator on hand probably isn't the first thing many of us are thinking about when planning get-togethers. But a program from the Nevada Fire Department is letting anyone have access to a valuable tool for preparing themselves for emergencies. "We've used the AED at youth football, or we've also seen AEDs go out of state to South Dakota to a Boy Scout camping trip. So we're really excited about the public taking advantage of it," said Ray Reynolds, Director of Fire & Emergency Medical Services for the city. In order to check out the AED, all a person has to do is go through CPR training with one of Nevada's EMS personnel. That training is also meant to help mentally prepare a person for a speedy reaction in a crisis. WOI-DT ABC 5 AMES PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
