Driver dies in fiery crash after striking semi-truck on Chicago's East Side VIDEO: A driver is dead after his vehicle struck a semi-truck and then caught fire on the East Side early Thursday morning. Chicago police said officers responded to a vehicle crash involving a 37-year-old man, at 106 and Avenue D around 1:18 a.m. The victim was driving his vehicle when he ran a stop sign and struck the semi on the side and became pinned. The car caught fire moments later, according to police. The Chicago Fire Department was on the scene and the victim was pronounced dead having suffered blunt-force trauma and burns to the body. The Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the incident. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Five goats die in Shiloh barn fire VIDEO: A more than 50-year-old barn in Shiloh, Illinois, burned to the ground Wednesday morning, killing five goats. Three of the goats were kid goats. Kay Good, the homeowner, said the goats were penned up for bonding time since they were just born over the New Year's weekend. "We suspect one of the goats kicked over a space heater to keep them warm," said Chief Brad White for the O'Fallon Fire Rescue. Hay in the barn fed the fire while it was raining, which presented unique challenges for the O'Fallon Fire Rescue firefighters. "Rain and mud present those challenges that some (firefighters are not familiar with)," White said. White said that anytime animals are involved in fires, it can make things tricky. "It kind of goes to that whole risk versus gain," he said. "Do we risk the firefighters to save the animals?" KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS Firebreak being built along Route 13 in Southern Illinois aims to prevent devastation and disaster The recent trimming and mulching of the forest alongside Route 13 has no doubt raised some eyebrows and caused some concern among locals. The forests of Southern Illinois are loved and cherished, but what may appear to be open war against the forest's edge is actually sound forestry management techniques. A bill passed by Congress gave guidelines on infrastructure protection, and in the case of Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge, that included fire protection. "This day and age, just this urban interface that we had, especially on Route 13 between the cities of Carterville and Marion, in certain areas, we are putting in what are called firebreaks. If you had a potential wildfire, that would be the break, where we could control it from that vantage point," said Justin Sexton, the manager of Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge. THE SOUTHERN ILLINOISAN Crews battle home fire in Bloomington Two adults and a child are without a home after a fire Wednesday night. At 8:50 P.M., the Bloomington Fire Department responded to a house on fire at 709 W. Market St. There, they found flames in the back of the residence. Crews put out the fire in about 30 minutes. No one, including firefighters, was hurt. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Two adults and one child were displaced. The Fire Department notified the Red Cross for the occupants. VIDEO: Fire destroys 113-year-old Delaware building beyond repair A three-story building that stood for more than a century in downtown Laurel was being taken down Wednesday afternoon following an early morning fire that damaged the brick structure beyond repair. No injuries were reported, and the State Fire Marshal's Office continues to investigate the blaze that destroyed the 113-year-old building located at 130 E. Market St. Martin Torbert, who was staying at his girlfriend's place, said he walked out to smoke when he noticed what he thought was a thick fog. The Seaford resident then realized the fog was, in fact, smoke from the fire. "The whole building was just engulfed in smoke," he told Delaware Online/The News Journal. "You can hear the window panes cracking from the heat, and as soon as those window panes came out, it was an inferno." DELAWARE ONLINE - METERED SITE 'This is a journey': Former Minnesota firefighter helps create transitional healing center for burn survivors VIDEO: A former firefighter who was badly burned on the job is turning his pain into purpose. Jake LaFerriere helped set up a first-of-its kind facility for families facing the same struggles. It was in 2010 when LaFerriere's life changed forever when he was on duty as a Minneapolis firefighter. "I was on fire and I jumped from the third floor, and by the grace of God I survived this experience because there was a porch overhand down here that caught me," LaFerriere said. "I knew my career as a firefighter was over. I was really struggling to want to live at this point." But he says he was inspired by kids he met in the burn unit, and he took his second chance at life to help others. He started a nonprofit called "Firefighters for Healing," and created a burn survivor camp. WCCO-TV CBS 4 MINNEAPOLIS Florida's Daytona International Speedway to use fully electric fire truck PHOTO: REV Fire Group has partnered with Daytona International Speedway to provide four firefighting trucks to the track ahead of the 2023 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona and Daytona 500. While these include standard pumpers, one will be an electric model called the Vector. "We are excited to provide the all-electric Vector for our Florida neighbor, Daytona International Speedway, to protect its employees, NASCAR drivers, and the many fans and spectators who attend The Great American Race and other events," commented REV Fire Group Vice President Mike Virnig. "Vector also protects the environment, making this a perfect collaboration with DIS and NASCAR and their many green initiatives designed to reduce the track and sport's carbon footprint and promote sustainability." THE CHECKERED FLAG Health Sciences students help Kentucky fire department stay healthy and pain-free Firefighters across the world risk their lives every day to protect citizen lives, properties and the environment from disasters. Rescue missions and other duties — such as saving a family from a burning building or pulling an injured person out of a vehicle after a collision — can prove to be extremely challenging, especially paired with the grueling schedules they are required to work. Often referred to as "tactical athletes," firefighters and other first responders encounter much of the same types of injuries that traditional sport athletes do. But, while the average professional athletic career in sports lasts five to seven years, professional firefighters end up exerting themselves physically and mentally for 25 years or more, with no "off-season" to recover from injuries and exertion.
