Springfield to spend $5.5 million on police, fire, and Public Works vehicles The Springfield Fire and Police Departments, along with the Office of Public Works, are about to receive $5.5 million in vehicle upgrades The police department is set to receive 30 new hybrid patrol cars. The city's budget director, Bill McCarty, says that'll mean 70 of about 200 total patrol cars will be hybrids, as the city started transitioning about three years ago. The fire department is set to receive $2.3 million in new equipment, including a fire engine. Public Works will receive about $1.7 million for new vehicles. But with a global microchip shortage right now (which every modern car requires), McCarty says that means the new police and fire vehicles won't be available immediately. "The firetrucks and the patrol cars, I'm afraid we're talking about six to twelve months. There's just that much of a backlog," McCarty said. WICS-TV ABC 20 SPRINGFIELD Kewanee firefighters take hands-on training course for grain bin rescue calls Firefighters from Kewanee are taking part in some potentially life-saving training, learning how to best respond to grain bin accidents. The training includes hands-on and in-classroom sessions to learn how to use tools and execute response techniques in entrapment scenarios. Rural departments nationwide have had the opportunity to attend the training, which was hosted by agriculture company Gold Star FS, Inc and Nationwide Insurance, funded through a training grant. A spokesperson from Gold Star FS, Inc., which helped host the training, said every year thousands of farmers and grain handlers put their lives at risk working with grain bins. Accidents can happen when they enter to remove clumped or rotten grain. In 2020, Illinois reported the most cases of grain-entrapment nationwide, according to a report by Purdue University. LOUIS Key City Panel Endorses Plan to Build Boys & Girls Club at Redesigned Police, Fire Training Academy in Chicago A plan to include a new Boys & Girls Club as part of a redesigned police and fire training academy is one vote away from final approval, as supporters told aldermen Wednesday that it will benefit young residents of the West Side and bring much-needed investment to one of Chicago's most violent neighborhoods. The proposal, backed by Mayor Lori Lightfoot and unanimously endorsed by the City Council's Housing and Real Estate Committee on Wednesday, calls for the city to rent the land for the two-story, 18,000-square-foot facility to the Boys & Girls Clubs for $1 per year for 55 years, with two 10-year options to extend the lease. A final vote by the full City Council is scheduled for July 21. If the plan is approved, it will end a ferocious controversy that has raged for nearly four years. WTTW-TV PBS 11 CHICAGO Fire does $125,000 damage to Hawthorn Woods home No injuries were reported in a Hawthorn Woods fire Tuesday afternoon. Major fire destroys multiple South Carolina businesses VIDEO/PHOTOS: A major fire consumed multiple businesses along the 700 block of Johnnie Dodds Boulevard in Mount Pleasant early Thursday morning. Multiple fire crews responded to Lafayette Village sometime around midnight. Flames were seen shooting through the roof of Jean's of Mount Pleasant Bridal Shop. The fire also involved Auto Money Title Loans which is located next door. A third business was also damaged. ABC News 4's Eli Brand was one of the first people on the scene and called 911. Dispatchers said his call was one of the first that they received regarding the fire. The fire was large enough to produce a glow in surrounding neighborhoods. Officials say area apartments were evacuated as a precaution. Power lines and trees in the area caught fire, officials said. WCIV-TV ABC 36 CHARLESTON Arizona fire robot to assist with hazmat calls The Peoria Fire-Medical Department has purchased a hazmat robot to avoid tragedies like the 2019 explosion at the APS McMicken energy storage facility that injured four Peoria firefighters. The first of its kind in the United States, the robot was purchased with grant funds from the Tohono O'odham Nation. "Literally, it doesn't exist anywhere else," said Peoria Fire Capt. Mark Barbee. "We had four firefighters who were injured at a battery facility. This came about from that. "It was a lot of work with the people involved in the incident and fire administration. We determined we needed to take less risks when we have something like that that is unknown." The NED Hazmat 193 robot boasts four cameras and can read labels. The robot allows the operating firefighter to remotely see inside potentially dangerous spaces before crews enter. PEORIA TIMES Economic decline is fueling a surge of building fires in California town, top firefighter says Buildings are burning in Barstow at an unusually high rate. A chief city firefighter sees decades of economic deterioration and social despair — accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic — as the root cause. Battalion Chief Nick DiNapoli joined the Barstow Fire Protection District nearly 40 years ago and says his team has been stretched thin for much of that time. In 2021, the agency is facing added pressure from an uptick in structure fires: Incidents of residential or commercial buildings burning — a class separate from wildfires, which are also on the rise across the High Desert. Barstow's fire department has responded to 79 structure fires in the last six months, Acting Fire Chief Sid Hultquist said, "with 14 of them being significant fires that required an extended commitment time." VICTORVILLE DAILY PRESS General Motors Warns Some Bolt Owners To Park Outdoors Due To Fire Risk General Motors is telling owners of some older Chevrolet Bolts to park them outdoors and not to charge them overnight because two of the electric cars caught fire after recall repairs were made. The company said Wednesday that the request covers 2017 through 2019 Bolts that were part of a group that was recalled earlier due to fires in the batteries. The latest request comes after two Bolts that had gotten recall repairs caught fire, one in Vermont and the other in New Jersey, GM spokesman Kevin Kelly said. Owners should take the steps "out of an abundance of caution," he said. The steps should be continued until GM engineers investigate and develop a repair, he said. The cars should be parked outdoors after charging is complete, GM said in a statement. "We are moving as quickly as we can to investigate this issue," the company said. The club has been around nearly four decades. This week, they're training at the Hit Factory gym in Bay Ridge for Friday's annual "Thrilla in Camilla" charity fundraiser at Rockaway Beach.
