A lifetime of service: Kankakee firefighter retires after 40 years Working a job at one place for 40 years is quite an accomplishment. To do it as a firefighter makes it extraordinary. Last Friday, on the 40th anniversary of his joining the Kankakee Fire Department, James H. Stokes Jr. retired. "It's been a journey," Stokes said. "We saved lots of lives. This is the best fire department in the whole wide world. We give it everything we have." Though Stokes says it is time for him to retire, there are still things he wants to do. Most important is helping and assisting people in the community. Stokes was honored at Monday's Kankakee City Council meeting which was attended by his family. "I would like to congratulate Mr. Stokes on his retirement," Kankakee Mayor Chasity Wells-Armstrong said. "Forty years in the fire service is a milestone. It truly shows his dedication and commitment to our community." Massachusetts artist paints helmet shields for firefighters across country VIDEO: Bob Stella is a self-taught painter. "It's a dying art. There's not many people doing it anymore, it's all done on computers now," he said. Stella makes the shields that go on firefighters' helmets in his tiny Weymouth workshop and is one of the most renowned artists in his industry. "I started in 1988 and just took off from word of mouth. Now it's a monster I can't kill. I do them all over the country," he said. Stella is the official shield maker for several big fire departments across the country, including in Boston and New York City. "Here's a shield in New York City at a big, major catastrophe and it's made by a guy sitting in Weymouth," Stella said. He delicately paints each shield and makes about 20 per week. Each shield is unique, each has a story. One of the most touching shields Stella has ever made was for the New York City Fire Chief shortly after 9/11. WFXT-TV FOX 25 BOSTON California city moves to put fire department in charge of mental health response calls, not police When someone has a mental health crisis in Oakland, chances are good in the near future that police officers won't be showing up to try to calm them down. The City Council this week unanimously signaled that it wants the fire department to handle mental health crises and other non-crime calls by sending out paramedics and counselors. Although residents of Oakland and other cities have long discussed the benefit of dispatching special teams of civilians to deescalate tense situations, the idea picked up momentum in the wake of high-profile police killings of Black Americans and other people of color.. In the summer of 2019, the Oakland City Council authorized paying the Urban Strategies Council $40,000 to come up with a feasibility analysis of creating a non-police response team model such as the Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets — CAHOOTS — program that the city of Eugene, Oregon, has successfully operated for three decades. EAST BAY TIMES - METERED SITE Texas high school awarded $10K grant for invention designed to keep firefighters safe VIDEO: Students at a Garland ISD high school have come up with an invention that is now getting national attention. Students at the Gilbreath-Reed Career and Technical Center designed a system to sanitize firefighters' boots to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. The design got the attention of the researchers at MIT. The high school was then given a $10,000 grant from the Lemelson-MIT Program, which promotes invention and the early stages of entrepreneurship across the United States. "Wow, we're working with the top. I hope we can apply that to everything else we do," said teacher Carmen Diaz. The North Texas school was one of 13 across the country to receive the grant. The school district's website states that the grant "encourages high school students to investigate problems evident in their own neighborhoods, come together as a team to select one problem that inspires them most, and invent a technological solution to that problem." KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH 'God Was on Our Side That Day': 25 Years Ago, Wisconsin Could Have Lost Weyauwega We're not supposed to forget our heroes. But 25 years ago, the heroes themselves, the ones that helped save the city of Weyauwega, they couldn't wait to forget. A train derailment, 469,000 gallons of burning propane, and 14 days wondering if this day would be their last; they didn't want to be heroes anymore. They stared death in the face, and it wasn't pleasant. "They had a large number on their staff quit and they went on to other occupations,'' said Jim Baehnman, Weyauwega's assistant fire chief, said of the site crews from Green Bay, Texas, and Missouri who were brought in to mitigate the situation. "They were very, very, very concerned that they had just dodged the biggest bullet of their life." By all accounts, every one of them was lucky to be alive. By all belief, the hand of God touched them all. "Why it didn't explode that morning, there is really no explanation whatsoever,'' says Jim. Local firefighter Jeremy Taylor, a father of four girls, recently lost his new Nashville home to a fire. After seeing the news on social media, Henry reached out to the Titans to ask how he could help. "Not only did I see the tweet but I saw that he was a Titans fan and also a first responder. Nashville has been through so much as a community – the tornado, the pandemic going on, and then the Christmas bombing. I just wanted to be able to help someone in need and someone who has been helping everyone else throughout this pandemic." Not long after reaching out and getting Taylor's contact information, the Nashville firefighter showed up to work with a $15,000 donation waiting for him. Henry donated $10,000 from his ‘Two All' Foundation and Campbell's Chunky Soup donated the other $5,000 to help out. SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
