Peoria fire & Red Cross ‘Sounding the Alarm' on fire safety VIDEO: The City of Peoria and the American Red Cross are working together to "Sound the alarm" It's a campaign to promote the importance of having a working smoke alarm in your home. The City of Peoria, the Peoria Fire Department and the Red Cross held a press conference Tuesday at the fire station to announce they will install free smoke alarms in Peoria homes. "Most people believe that they have time to evacuate their homes when that time will come, and the sad reality is that we only have 2 minutes research shows," American Red Cross Board Chairman Tim Gronewold said. "So it's critical to have working smoke alarms and that's what this program is about." The smoke alarms installed have 10-year built-in batteries. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Fallen firefighter remembered in Godfrey at new fire station PHOTO: Godfrey Fire Capt. Jacob "Jake" Ringering, 37, who died on the job March 5, 2019, was remembered in a brief but solemn ceremony Tuesday in front of the new Godfrey Fire Station. About 50 people gathered to mark the fifth anniversary and watch firefighters lower the flag at 5:03 p.m., the time he perished when struck by debris from a partial building collapse five years ago. Ringering was with other firefighters providing mutual aid at a house fire in the 4000 block of Culp Lane in Bethalto when he died and three other firefighters were injured. Members past and present of the Godfrey Fire Department stood at attention and saluted as the flag was slowly lowered and then folded. A firefighter delivered the flag to Ringering's widow, Allison, as she stood quietly with their children, Nora, Elaina and Logan. THE TELEGRAPH - METERED SITE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEOS: Fire fills night sky as Ohio building goes up in flames Crews closed a portion of East 55th Street in Cleveland early Thursday morning due to an overnight fire at a building on Lake Court. 3News' Austin Love reported live from the scene all morning where the flames have since been extinguished. We're told 11 fire companies responded to the incident. While nobody was hurt, the building's roof reportedly collapsed. Lt. Mike Norman of the Cleveland Fire Department told 3News it was a "tricky spot to fight a fire" because of the nearby train tracks. The building is home to a commercial linen company known as The Clean Group. Their site says it's a company founded by former Cleveland Browns player Joe Jurevicius. The cause of the fire is under investigation. WKYC-TV NBC 3 CLEVELAND New York governor announces state's new volunteer firefighter stipend program VIDEO: Governor Kathy Hochul announced that there will be a new program designed to strengthen New York State's volunteer firefighter services. The first training stipend of $10 million will offset the costs of training courses that firefighters are required to complete. "Volunteer firefighters put their lives on the line to protect those in their communities, and it is time that we recognize and compensate them for the work that they have done," Governor Hochul said. "These stipends will allow our firefighters to continue serving their communities while also being able to provide for their families." According to the governor's office, "Volunteer fire departments serve approximately nine million New Yorkers, nearly half of the State's population. WGRZ-TV NBC 2 BUFFALO Deadly Connecticut fires have struck ‘one after another after another,' killing 15 since January Fifteen people were killed in fires in the first two months of 2024 in Connecticut, making it the most deadly start to the year in at least a decade, according to data from state fire officials. "A couple of years, we've had starts like this," said Roger Nelson, a Bloomfield fire marshal and vice president of the Connecticut Fire Marshals Association. "But this seems to be one after another after another." From Somers in the north to East Lyme in the southeast, there were 11 deadly fires in January and February, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The number of deaths is by far the largest in that time period since 2015 and almost five times the nine-year average of 3.2 deaths, according to data obtained by CT Insider. Those who died ranged in age from 5 to 95.
