WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR New Tool Helps Victims of Domestic Violence in DuPage County Access Help Via Their Phones Law enforcement in DuPage County is unveiling a new tool in the form of a QR code to help victims of domestic violence access resources in a safe and discreet way. Officers are currently trained to hand out what's called a "tear sheet," a list of resources to help victims. Now a new QR code will supplement that practice, putting the resources right at a victim's fingertips, out of sight of their abuser. "Routinely we go to the same addresses over and over again. A lot of times we struggle to get that victim, that spouse that needs help, to accept that help for fear there's going to be reprisals," said Brian Cunningham, chief of the Woodridge Police Department. "It allows the victims to get ready to leave whenever they're ready to leave. Instead of having to hide a piece of paper, they can just hide it in their phone," said John Caldwell, a fire medic EMT with the Lisle Woodridge Fire District. VIDEO: Texas chemical plant fire was caused by accidental tanker leak, fire marshal's office says Investigators believe they've pinpointed the cause of an explosion and massive fire at a Pasadena plant on Wednesday -- and they say it was an accident. One person was injured in the blast at about 12:07 p.m. at the INEOS Phenol plant along Highway 225 near the East Beltway. Houston TranStar cameras captured the large explosion and fireball. Smoke and flames could be seen from miles away. Harris County Pollution Control said there weren't any impacts to air quality in the area. "Fortunately, we have good wind blowing whatever was up high and aloft in the flame, and the fire, the smoke," Dr. Latrice Babin said. "So, we are not expecting there to be any impact." One worker was hurt in the blast. The person was conscious, alert and stable at the hospital, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. There's no word on the individual's identity or the nature of any injuries. Everyone at the plant was accounted for, officials said. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Wisconsin firefighters improve fitness with sports science help from Mayo Clinic VIDEO/PHOTOS: A sports science collaboration between Mayo Clinic Health System and the La Crosse Fire Department is yielding results, with firefighters implementing new exercises and practices to improve their strength and stamina. Six months ago, the clinic's sports medicine team introduced Fusionetics to the fire department, an evidence-based, technology-enabled performance healthcare system that tests, scores and helps create a personalized training routine. Several years in the making, the program uses 2D motion capturing to tabulate a movement efficiency score for each exercise. Mayo uses the findings to help firefighters tailor their workouts to improve mobility, speed and breathing efficiency while reducing the risk of injury. As cardiovascular disease is prevalent among firefighters, increasing fitness levels is crucial in sustaining a healthy workforce. LACROSSE TRIBUNE - METERED SITE Pennsylvania museum loans period firefighting equipment for 250th anniversary exhibit PHOTOS: Hoses, helmets and vintage pumper trucks dating from as early as the 1800s bear witness to the legacy of volunteer firefighting in Greensburg. The equipment can be seen in the Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department Museum, behind City Hall on South Main Street. Select items from that collection will temporarily have a new home at the Westmoreland Historical Society Education Center at Historic Hanna's Town in Hempfield. The firefighting artifacts are being loaned as part of the celebration of Westmoreland County's 250th anniversary. The Greensburg museum is providing an 1875 hand-drawn hose cart for inclusion in the historical society's exhibit, "Westmoreland 250! Celebrating our Story with 25 Objects," slated for April 14 through the end of the year. TRIBLIVE Los Angeles area hit by rare tornado – the strongest one to hit the county since 1983 VIDEO: At least one person was injured after a rare tornado hit a city just southeast of Los Angeles Wednesday, local officials said. The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado "briefly touched down" in an industrial park and warehouse district in the city of Montebello and rated the tornado an EF-1 with estimated peak winds of 110 mph – the strongest tornado to hit the Los Angeles area since 1983. The "intense microcell" damaged at least 17 buildings, 11 so severely the fire department deemed them too dangerous to use, according to Michael Chee, a city public information officer. "There was flying debris and everything!!!!" tweeted one person who shared a video of the storm. The video zooms in on a mass of dark gray clouds consuming the sky and tapering down toward land. The reported injury is considered minor, Chee said at a news conference. CNN Maine law for K9s is influencing other states As of 2018, a law was passed in Maine that if a working police dog is injured in the line of duty, they are able to be treated by EMS before being sent to the hospital. Maine was the first state in New England to pass this law to protect police K9s. One of Portland's K9s, and his officer partner, are now advocating for that same law in New Hampshire. Working with police dogs takes time, training, and discipline. Officer Michelle Cole of the Portland Police Department is one of five officers with a K9. She fronted the bill in 2018 that working dogs can get treated by EMS workers on the scene. "Pretty proud of the work that we've done in this state, and they are going to go back and make this program for their state, and states across the nation are all hopping on board," Cole said.
