1 seriously hurt in Westmont apartment complex fire One person has serious injuries after an early morning fire in west suburban Westmont. Westmont firefighters said when they got to an apartment complex just after 5:10 a.m. in the first-block of Pier Drive, they could see smoke and flames. The victim was rescued from a first-floor apartment. Neighbors said they tried alerting him, but couldn't get to him. I went to his door to knock on it because I smelled something ... then it gradually got stronger, and I saw smoke coming out from the door," resident Robert Milanesio said. No one else was hurt. It was not immediately clear how the fire began. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Moline firefighters respond to two incidents with help from local fire departments Moline firefighters received help from firefighters from East Moline, Rock Island and the Rock Island Arsenal as two possible structure fires were called in within eight minutes of each other Wednesday night. In a news release issued late Wednesday, Moline Deputy Fire Chief Steve Regenwether said the first fire was reported at 8:44 p.m. at 1122 16th Ave., a two-story multi-family building. The incident was called in by residents of the upstairs apartment who believed they had a fire in their apartment. At the time of the call there were two adults and two children who were able to leave the building safely. Upon arrival firefighters found an active fire in the hallway. The fire was quickly put out. Units remained on the scene for about 90 minutes performing salvage and overhaul while also searching for an extension of the fire in the walls. QUAD-CITY TIMES Peoria County fire departments team up for breast cancer fundraiser VIDEO: Various departments throughout Peoria County are teaming up with a t-shirt fundraiser to help battle breast cancer. Earlier this year, the Elmwood and Yates City fire departments launched a small fundraiser in honor of the wife of a retired firefighter, who has battled breast cancer twice. They raised around $500 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which drew some interest from surrounding communities and led Elmwood fire chief Robert Tannock to take things to the next level. "When I brought it up at the chiefs meeting, every chief wanted to do it … We want to put the real heroes in the forefront and raise some money for a good cause," Tannock said. This time, it is a new round of shirts, and every department is in on the effort - plus, every dollar raised helps the foundation in more ways than one. MOKENA PATCH Illinois Coronavirus Updates: BA.2 in Chicago, Travel Advisory Changes The BA.2 omicron subvariant could soon be the dominant COVID strain in Chicago, health officials said. And while numbers begin to show small signs of increase in the city, the health department has announced some big changes for its COVID programs and travel advisory. Here's what you need to know about the coronavirus pandemic across Illinois today: COVID is surging in several countries around the world, and while that has previously been an indicator of what to expect next in the U.S., what could make this time different? Experts are predicting a potential rise in cases, particularly surrounding the BA.2 subvariant, with some locations seeing current metrics near what Chicago reported in the peak of its omicron surge. "We're seeing countries with 50% positivity, 60% positivity, 30% positivity, you know, even like the UK over 10% positivity," Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said during a COVID update Tuesday. Two Firefighters Injured Battling Separate 2-Alarm Fires In Maryland VIDEO: Two of Baltimore's firefighters were injured as they battled separate two-alarm fires on Wednesday, the local firefighters union said. The first fire started in Northwest Baltimore and emitted heavy smoke. Firefighters had to close off part of Reisterstown Road as they battled the blaze. The union said shortly before 5 p.m. firefighters responded to the scene at the 5200 block of Reisterstown Road in the Woodmere neighborhood. They found fire showing from multiple two-story row homes. Fire officials say that one house was vacant and two were occupied. One of the firefighters suffered "minor injuries," Baltimore Fire Chief Roman Clark said. "It was pretty intense," one man said. "I mean, it was a lot of smoke and it was heavy and it covered the sky, really, especially during the beginning." WJZ-TV CBS 13 BALTIMORE New technology to increase safety for Pennsylvania first responders The Move Over Law in Pennsylvania is meant to protect police, fire, and workers from being injured, and it's important for drivers to be aware. All the Scranton Fire Department's vehicles now have an added layer of protection, with the addition of new technology. "Anything that we could do to alert drivers out on the highway that we're operating on a scene. Typically, our focus is on the safety and the treatment of the patients that may be involved in an accident," said Scranton Fire Chief John Judge. The HAAS Safety Cloud system is a collision-prevention service that connects emergency lights and sirens with navigation apps, like Waze. Drivers using compatible apps will receive a notification when approaching an emergency. "They'll get some early notification, and it will actually hopefully have them slowing down." The system is also beneficial to other fire trucks that are going to cross the same route headed to an emergency. It will send a notification to prevent a possible collision. WNEP-TV ABC 16 SCRANTON ‘Fire in the hole': How the Las Vegas bomb squad works PHOTOS: Four milk jugs filled with gasoline were wrapped in detonation cord outside a Las Vegas Fire Department training center on Wednesday. Bomb Squad technician Mark Duncan yelled "fire in the hole!" three times. A loud bang sent a fireball about 10 feet into the air of the eastern valley and a large plume of black smoke even higher into the clear desert sky. Duncan said the explosive weight of the blast, part of a media demonstration, was the equivalent 0.11 pounds of TNT. Cmdr. Shon Saucedo said team members wear two hats. The unit investigates arsons within Las Vegas city limits, but also serves as the bomb squad for all of Southern Nevada. "We're the law enforcement wing of Las Vegas Fire Rescue," Saucedo said. The squad has two bomb response trucks. From inside, team members can remotely control robots and conduct X-rays of possible explosive packages, Capt. Jamie Sypniewicz said. The screens in the truck displayed an example of an X-ray of a pipe bomb in a bag. LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL - METERED SITE Firefighter in Oklahoma becomes his department's first smoke diver Broken Arrow is celebrating one of its firefighters. He's become the department's first Smoke Diver. The Oklahoma Smoke Diver Association is one of only three Smoke Diver programs in the United States. Oklahoma's program is in its second year and now 11 more firefighters have the designation including Broken Arrow's own Wade Ambrose. Becoming a certified Smoke Diver is all about rigorous training and teaching firefighters to push past their breaking point to become better at their jobs. "Bad stuff usually happens later on in the fire. It's not when everybody is fresh. It's usually when people are tired and start making bad decision. [The program is] designed to make people better at critical thinking and performing under high stress when they are physically taxed," Wade Ambrose said. KJRH-TV NBC 2 TULSA 'A real sky-lighter': Remembering the Paaske Furniture fire in Iowa On Wednesday, March 30, 1977 one of the largest disasters to hit Lyons occurred when a massive fire completely destroyed the historic four-story Paaske Furniture building at 65 Main Ave. The strong winds spread the fire onto the adjoining Potts Jewelry Store at 71 Main Ave. That historic building also was destroyed. Assistant Fire Chief Cliff Peters told the Clinton Herald the next day that he had never seen a fire like that before. "The heat was terrible, the wind was terrible, and we didn't have enough men, hoses, or anything." Peters had no official estimate of damage but thought it could be millions of dollars. Peters said the fire started on the top floor. The wind was from the south. "We had so much heat that windows were exploding across the street." Clinton weather records show the sustained wind speed that day was 35 mph, with wind gusts up to 55 mph. CLINTON HERALD PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
