Danville firefighters reflect on dramatic rescue Danville firefighters are reflecting on a rescue they say only happens in stories. They say the only option was to think fast when they responded to an apartment fire on Sunday morning. Two children were already rescued from a second-floor window. The mother was hanging on getting ready to jump her way out. "We grabbed the ladder; he took it around that side and started to throw the ladder when she jumped out the window. She jumped out the window at that point," said Lieutenant Jason Hotsinpiller. "It really just kind of went back to training. Everything. Ironically enough, we just worked on this training about two weeks ago doing the exact same thing," said Firefighter Matt Goodner, "So we were pretty fortunate. It was pretty fresh." WCIA-TV CBS 3 CHAMPAIGN 9-year-old girl in Schiller Park inspires father to organize fire truck and ambulance donations to Ukraine VIDEO: "Hey dad, is there anything we can do to help?" That was the question Chris Manson's 9-year-old daughter, Lilly, asked this time last year that got his brain humming, leading to the creation of U.S. Ambulances for Ukraine. "It's really nice to know that we're helping people and saving lots of lives," Lilly said. In the 12-plus months since that fateful day, Manson has built partnerships with Chicago's Consulate General of Ukraine, UA Resistance and several other medical organizations, leading to what will be their eighth shipment of ambulances and fire engines to Ukraine, set to depart from Valparaiso Thursday. "We'll be shipping them out of the East Coast on a ship and eventually get them into the Germany and up to Poland," Manson said. "Then we'll send a team of Americans to drive them into Ukraine and deliver them into military units, hospitals or fire departments." WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO Crews battle Decatur house fire Combustible materials stored too close to a furnace caused a structure fire that took more than an hour to control, according to the Decatur Fire Department. In a statement, the department said crews were dispatched at 3:33 p.m. Wednesday to a residence in the 2300 block of East Locust Street. Arriving five minutes later, firefighters found heavy smoke and flames that were visible through a window. No occupants were inside at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported, the department said. "The goal is not about me. We celebrate me, but this is for every female out there, every female on the line who's working today," said Carter, who was sworn in as the Southbury Training School Fire Department Fire Chief under the state's Department of Developmental Services. "The role is to protect and serve those individuals that have disabilities on that campus and we are also moving statewide," said Carter. Carter's major achievement drew several rounds of cheers and applause at the ceremony. "Chief Carter, it's got a ring to it," said Gov. Ned Lamont. WTIC-TV FOX 61 HARTFORD Train derailment, fire causes evacuation in western Minnesota town VIDEOS: An early morning train derailment has caused residents of a small town in Kandiyohi County to evacuate on Thursday. In a statement, BNSF Railway said approximately 22 cars derailed around 1 a.m. Some of the derailed cars were carrying ethanol and corn syrup and started on fire, the sheriff's office said. Part of the town near the crash site was evacuated to a school in nearby Prinsburg. The sheriff's office said travel is not advised in Raymond. According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Highway 23 is closed from Kandiyohi County Road 1 to Chippewa County Road 1 because of the derailment and fire. Raymond's assistant fire chief said crews are now letting the ethanol burn out after spraying thousands of gallons of water on the cars. WCCO-TV CBS 4 MINNEAPOLIS Collectors in Arkansas hope to spark desire for firefighting with museum VIDEO: One retired fire crew that has turned into collectors has been looking to tap into the little kid energy that often follows a field trip to a local firehouse. "My family had no problem buying for me at Christmas," said Bob Franklin, retired Little Rock captain. "It was always fire trucks." He has used that story to explain what drove him to more than 50 years in the fire service. Franklin shared that shopping for him these days is still just as easy— just tell him you're cleaning out a fire station anywhere in Arkansas. "We started having fire departments calling us and saying 'hey, we have this old stuff, you want it?' And so it just kind of going from word of mouth," he said. Those calls started coming in once word got out that Franklin and his retired buddies wanted to put together a museum that would build on the Historic Firehouse Museum and Hostel in Little Rock's MacArthur Park and go bigger.
