House partially collapses in fire in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood Part of a house collapsed Wednesday evening as firefighters battled a fire at the house. As CBS 2's Marissa Perlman reported, the fire broke out in a home in the 3300 block of West Pierce Avenue, near North and Homan avenues. Firefighters said there was one person living in the home, who got out safely. As of 10 p.m., a massive Fire Department response remained active, with the efforts of focused on the rear part of the roof of the frame house. All firefighters were accounted for after part of the house collapsed. The cause of the fire remained unknown Wednesday night. The homeowner was at the scene late Wednesday. He identified himself as Miguel, but declined to give his last name. he said the house has been in his family for decades, and had been owned by his mother, who passed away last month. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO New Thermal Imaging Cameras On The Way For Frankfort FPD The Frankfort Fire Protection District is getting three new thermal imaging cameras that will help its crew more safely and effectively battle blazes and better assist in potentially finding people or animals trapped inside burning buildings, said Frankfort FPD Chief Sean Fierce. The cameras were purchased via a nearly $25,000 grant from Illinois State Fire Marshal's small equipment grant program, Fierce said. The cameras will replace three of Frankfort FPD's existing cameras. The upgraded cameras are significant because the cameras allow fire crews to "see heat" through dense smoke, and can even see objects that may be inside walls or behind other objects, Fierce said. FRANKFORT PATCH Edwardsville firefighter spots house fire while on practice run PHOTO: A firefighter spending time learning how to drive Edwardsville's newest fire engine took a surprise detour Sunday after he saw a residential structure fire just past 11 a.m. at the intersection of Gerber Road and Eastlake Drive. "Sean Douglas was driving by in our new fire engine, 1320, and saw the fire just prior to the first 911 call being made," said Fire Chief James Whiteford late Monday. "He turned the truck around and started fighting the fire as it was being dispatched to the rest of the department." "It's kind of odd for a guy to get on the radio to ask about a fire," Douglas said Wednesday. He confirmed he had taken out Engine 1320 alone Sunday for some practice time behind the wheel of the department's newest fire truck. "It was a nice sunny day out but it was cold," he recalled. THE EDWARDSVILLE INTELLIGENCER New Rescue Equipment Will Aid Jacksonville Fire Department in Tech Rescue Status Goal The Jacksonville Fire Department will soon have a few more tools in the toolbox for saving lives. The Jacksonville City Council approved the purchase of several budgeted items for the Fire Department during the regular session Monday night. The first item approved was the purchase of a Zoll AutoPulse Resuscitation System which provides automatic CPR to a patient. Jacksonville Fire Department Chief Doug Sills says they currently use an AutoPulse out of the main fire station and the new one will be put into service at the West Lafayette sub-station. Sills says the AutoPulse can be a vital piece of equipment during a medical emergency. WLDS-AM 1180 JACKSONVILLE Good Samaritans Rescue Great Danes From Van Fire In Frankfort A 45th wedding anniversary is commonly associated with sapphires. But, for one couple and their grandchildren, the milestone anniversary will be connected with something just as, if not even more so, enduring than the precious blue gem: the memory of saving the lives of two Great Danes that were trapped in a burning van. New Lenox residents Sheree and Steve Twiddy and their grandchildren — 10-year-old Abi and 8-year-old Eli Twiddy, who live with their grandparents — had just finished a celebratory dinner at around 7 p.m. Saturday at Francesca's Fortunato in Frankfort. As they were walking out to their vehicle, Eli noticed a van parked nearby that had fire dripping from the undercarriage. Steve quickly went over to the van to check if anyone was inside. The front doors were unlocked, and Steve found that no people were in the front of the van. FRANKFORT PATCH PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

FDNY dealt with water pressure issues during massive Queens fire, 2 firefighters injured VIDEO: Two firefighters were hurt battling a raging fire that started Wednesday night in Queens and took hours to get under control. It started around 7 p.m. at a plumbing and electrical supply store on 101st Avenue near the Van Wyck Expressway in Jamaica. Intense flames were shooting out of the building. The FDNY arrived about three minutes after getting the call. Parts of the interior collapsed due to the intense flames. Crews were forced to undertake a "defensive attack," which meant they had to handle the flames from the outside of the building due to the threat of it collapsing entirely, CBS2's Elijah Westbrook reported. FDNY Acting Chief of Department John Hodgens said preventing the fire from spreading to other buildings and homes was a main concern, and they faced obstacles like not having enough water pressure to douse the flames. WCBS-TV CBS 2 NEW YORK Georgia fire chiefs blaze trail of diversity as historic all-female leadership team The Decatur Fire Department touts itself as a bastion of progressiveness, pushing boundaries in an arena of public safety that tends to be entrenched in tradition. It was the first, and remains the only fire department in the United States with an all-female command team, according to city officials. Chief Toni Washington leads the ranks and is supported by Deputy Chief Vera Morrison, her second in command, and Assistant Chief Ninetta Violante. The three women head up an agency with 55 firefighters, providing steady leadership in one of the most male-dominated lines of work. "I think that women as a whole bring something unique, something different to organizations that makes us even better as a group," Washington said. THE ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION App helps rescue crews find missing hikers, bikers faster in Florida county VIDEO: The Seminole County Fire Department is speeding up response times deep in the woods. Seminole County— which bills itself as "Florida's Natural Choice" — is known for its vast amount of parks and trails, and over the past couple of years, the trails have gotten busier, which means first responders are busier trying to rescue hikers, bikers and even horseback riders. But deep in the woods, miles away from a trailhead, that's a challenge. So now the Seminole County Fire Department has figured out how to find the lost and the hurt faster and better. Rescue crews are shortening response times on the toughest, most extreme biking trails from hours down to just minutes. There is only a firetruck and even a rescue-equipped ATV so far that can go into the woods so quite often, firefighters will have to walk, sometimes for miles, down narrow heavily-wooded root-lined trails. WKMG-TV CBS 6 ORLANDO Model T fire truck turns 100 in North Carolina city A symbol of Southport's pride and heritage is celebrating a special birthday this year. Dropped off by rail car in 1922, Brunswick County's first fire truck – the red Ford Model T that is turning 100 years old this year – became more than just another piece of equipment at the Southport Fire Department. After decades of servicing Southport citizens in times of need, the truck found new life in retirement appearing in parades and at special events. It has also served as the transport for former Southport firefighters on their way to their final resting place. "It's an integral part of our department," Southport Fire Chief Charles Drew said. "The fire service has a lot of tradition and history. With it being the first fire truck for Brunswick County, this truck means the world to this department and this city." Turning 100 is a momentous achievement, and the department is planning an event worthy of the occasion with a 100th anniversary celebration scheduled for Saturday, April 2, along the Southport waterfront. STATE PORT PILOT A COVID-19 spike like the one in China is unlikely in the US, experts say - Here's why The Omicron coronavirus variant may be reaching around the world, but different places are seeing significantly different effects. In the United States, COVID-19 case numbers have been falling since January. They may have hit a plateau as a subvariant of Omicron, BA.2, becomes the main cause of infections. But in China, an area of the world that has had few spikes during the pandemic, there has been a dramatic increase in cases as BA.2 rips through the country. The difference, experts say, is part policy and part population-level immunity. What's happening in China doesn't necessarily mean the US is in for another huge spike in cases. "Public health is very much a local thing," said Andy Pekosz, a virologist at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. With the first Covid-19 cases in 2020, he said, trends were similar around the globe because most people's bodies had no experience with the coronavirus, and there were no vaccines. They had no protection against it. CNN HEALTH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
