2 Retired Chicago Firefighters Remember Harrowing Experience Of Working At Ground Zero Right After 9/11 Twenty years ago this week, about 100 Chicago firefighters packed up and headed to New York City after the Twin Towers fell in the 9/11 attacks. They didn't hesitate. And as CBS 2 Political Investigator Dana Kozlov reported Wednesday, it was a defining time in their lives – for so many reasons. Some Chicago firefighters left within the day on Sept. 11, 2001. Others went in the day or two following. One group even caravanned with a police escort all the way to New York. Ask them, and they'll tell you – they'd do it again. "One of our buddies – a friend of mine – said when the smoke cleared, he realized we were down on our knees, and you guys helped us stand up," said retired Chicago firefighter Pat Maloney. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Follow Up: Michele Pankow makes history as first woman to serve as Rockford Fire Chief It's the start of a new era for the Rockford Fire Department, as Chief Michele Pankow took her oath as the new chief Wednesday morning at Memorial Hall. When Michele Pankow joined the Rockford Fire Department at just 22 years old, she knew she wanted to make a difference. "I like to be the best at what I do, and I like to give my best," Pankow said. But she said she never imagined her ambition would take her this far, becoming the first woman in Rockford's history to lead the fire department. "I've worked very, very hard over the years. I think the willingness to not give up, to not give in, I think has served me pretty well," said Pankow. WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD Firefighters knock down electric fire in Hanna City Logan-Trivoli Firefighters responded to a fire near Eden and Pleasant Grove Road Wednesday. According to a press release from Logan-Trivoli Fire Protection District Fire Chief David Tuttle, firefighters saw smoke coming from the attic when they arrived on the scene at approximately 11:24 a.m. Firefighters found fire in the ceiling in one of the bedrooms and worked quickly to extinguish the fire. The home's second and third floors suffered fire and water damage, causing an estimated $30,000 in damages. Limestone, Timber Hollis, Farmington, Elmwood, Brimfield, Dunlap, AMT, and Yates City Firefighters provided mutual aid to the scene. Crews were at the home for two hours performing salvage and overhaul. The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Springfield: Students encouraged to create fire safety plan during Campus Fire Safety Month As part of Campus Fire Safety Month, the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) encourages students to create and practice a fire safety plan. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), student housing fires cause around one death, 32 injuries and $15 million dollars in property damage each year. Since January 2000, at least 175 people have died in college-related fires, seven of which happened in Illinois. "This month serves as a good reminder for schools, universities, colleges and local municipalities to join together and evaluate the level of fire safety being provided in both on and off-campus student housing. It's important that all the proper steps are being taken to ensure fire-safe living environments are available for students," Illinois State Fire Marshal Matt Perez says. According to a report sent to 22News from the Pittsfield Fire Deputy Chief Neil Myers, the department received information of the fire on White Terrace around 11:27 p.m. Wednesday night. When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke could be seen coming from the fourth floor windows and heavy fire on the first floor. The Pittsfield Fire Department sent several crews to the fire and received additional aid from the Lenox and Dalton Fire Departments. Two firefighters were injured during the fire, one received a laceration to their hand from falling glass and another firefighter received an elbow injury. In addition, two other firefighters went sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation and were later released. WWLP-TV NBC/CW+ 22 SPRINGFIELD Actor Steve Buscemi: Everyone Said ‘Never Forget' 9/11; Some Have No Choice VIDEO: My dad was a sanitation worker for New York City. His message to me and my brothers was, when you turn 18, take whatever civil service test is available. Lucky for me, it was the Fire Department's. I didn't yet know what I wanted to do for a career, but at Engine 55 in Lower Manhattan, I found something even better: a brotherhood. I laid low as a "probie," but by the time my secret other life came out (I'd taken acting classes and dabbled in stand-up), I understood that busting balls is how firefighters express affection. When, after four years on the job, it became impossible to juggle my shifts with both a movie and a play, I took a leave of absence, figuring I'd be back. Seventeen years later, I was. One of the strongest sensations that flooded over me on Sept. 11, 2001, was that feeling of connection. TIME - METERED SITE Training Center in Tennessee to teach first responders to work nuclear emergencies The land passersby see cleared in west Oak Ridge near the Oak Ridge Turnpike will soon host a training center for first responders, including those responding to nuclear emergencies. OAK RIDGER The ‘unseen' threat: Surge of COVID-19 cases affecting Texas firefighters Michael Glynn had a long day. He attended a funeral for a beloved retiree of his department, then went to the hospital to be with the family of another retired firefighter. "Speaking to a firefighter that is dying in a hospital bed and their family is being told they have 15 more minutes? That's sad," he said. "It's sad times for firefighters." Glynn, the President of the Fort Worth Professional Firefighters Association, said it's always been a dangerous line of work. He is also a trustee for the Texas State Association of Fire Fighters, and as a long-time firefighter himself, he knows loss. "But a lot of those hazards are things that you can see and feel and touch and hear," he said, noting that the unseen threat of the coronavirus is what concerns him most.
