Man Injured in Chicago Lawn Gas Explosion, Authorities Say A man was hospitalized after a gas explosion badly-damaged his home in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, officials said. According to Chicago fire officials, the explosion occurred in the 6600 block of South Claremont Wednesday. Authorities say that the force of the explosion caused at least two sides of the home to collapse, briefly trapping the man inside. He did not suffer any visible injuries, authorities said, but was taken to an area hospital, where his condition has stabilized. No further information was immediately available, and firefighters remain on the scene. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO South Jacksonville Home Damaged by Fire South Jacksonville and Jacksonville Fire Departments responded to a call of a structure fire on West Greenwood just after 2 pm Wednesday afternoon. Smoke was showing from the home as crews arrived on scene. South Jacksonville Fire Chief Richard Evans Jr. said no one was home at the time and a neighbor called after seeing the smoke. "We were dispatched to a structure fire here at 204 West Greenwood. When we arrived we had heavy smoke inside the residence. We pulled an attack line to enter the residence and also did a primary search and all occupants were out. It took a few minutes to find the fire. We ended up locating it in the basement of the residence and we got it knocked out. There is extensive smoke damage throughout the house and the State Fire Marshal's Office is on the way to do some investigation right now." WCSJ-FM 103.1 LASALLE-PERU Fire damages Moultrie Avenue house in Mattoon No injuries were reported from a fire Wednesday morning that damaged a house on Moultrie Avenue. The Mattoon Fire Department reported in a press release that its crews were dispatched at 7:51 a.m. to this structure fire at 805 Moultrie Ave. and subsequently found a working fire inside a single-family residence there. Crews deployed a 1 3/4-inch handline to the rear door of the home, and then began an interior attack and search for occupants. It appeared the occupant would not be home because the car was not in the driveway, but crews were notified that there might be a dog inside of the structure. They extinguished the fire and searched the interior. No occupants or pets were located inside. The fire was declared under control at 8 a.m. Crews then conducted overhaul work to ensure that the fire was completely extinguished and had not spread to the attic. VIDEO: 2 homes destroyed in Pennsylvania fire: 'We lost everything' A fire broke out and destroyed two homes in New Eagle after police said a man was burning weeds with a propane torch in his yard and went back inside. A neighbor who saw the fire on First Avenue alerted homeowner Randy Leach, who tried to put the fire out with a garden hose. One of the homes, which is used for storage and recreation and was unoccupied, burned to the ground. The fire spread to their other house next door. "The homeowner was burning weeds with a torch and went inside," New Eagle Fire Chief Paul Pro said. "And the next thing you know, the structure next to his house that he lives was on fire." Both homes were destroyed, though no one was hurt. Randy and Carole got out safely with their dogs. "We lost everything," Carole said. "Thankful that me and my husband got out with our dog and my dad's dog got out too." KDKA-TV CBS 2 PITTSBURGH Texas fire department's groundbreaking program has offered 1,000 units of whole blood in the field VIDEO: A San Antonio Fire Department program is now the gold standard across the country, making whole blood available on ambulances and at trauma scenes. Three years ago, San Antonio mom Tiffany Kieschnick was driving to the store to get her son iced tea. "I ended up having a stroke on my way home, and I flipped my car into a ditch and coded in the car. The paramedics actually said that they were shocked when I came back to life," she said. San Antonio EMS had just begun carrying whole blood to trauma scenes to allow for immediate transfusions. "Had they not had whole blood on that ambulance, I was not going to make it," she said. Kieschnick was the first patient to receive whole blood in the field, not just in San Antonio but in the nation. That's because SAFD created the program in late 2018. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Hawaii firefighters join police for key training on active school shooter situations First responders are training together for an active shooter on campus. Their focus is saving lives faster. For the exercise, it's an active shooter on campus and first responders from the Honolulu Police Department and Honolulu Fire Department carried mock victims from the building into an ambulance. Their priorities are stopping the killing, stopping the dying and rapid casualty evacuation. "What we are preaching to our officers now, that second priority of work is stopping the dying which is starting the medicine process," said HPD Lt. Neil Han. National figures show it usually takes 3 to 4 minutes before an active shooter suspect kills himself, is barricaded, is shot or arrested. "That scene theoretically becomes a warm zone if the intel is there is only one suspect," said Han. Then the rescue task force can move in. HAWAII NEWS NOW 100-Year-Old North Carolina Fire Commissioner Gets A Big Thank You Usually when people turn 100, they're no longer active in their profession, however, Curtis Kennedy is anything but usual. He recently celebrated his 100th birthday, but Kennedy – an original fire commissioner for the McLeansville Fire Department when it began in 1951 – still plays an active role as a fire commissioner for the department. On Thursday, Sept. 15, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners plans to honor the energetic centenarian. Earlier this year, the McLeansville Fire Department showed its appreciation for Kennedy soon after he turned 100. Kennedy graduated from Rankin High School in Greensboro and enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He later went to work for the Guilford County Planning Department as an electrical inspector and eventually became the director of inspectors. RHINO TIMES 9/11 flag displayed in Virginia while making its way around the world VIDEO: On Wednesday morning the Virginia Patriot Guard Riders arrived in Lexington for a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. A flag that once flew in New York at the World Trade Center after the September 11th attacks was displayed on the flag pole at the Lexington fire department for 9 minutes and 11 seconds during the ceremony. The Virginia Patriot Guard Riders rode to Lexington from Richmond on Wednesday morning as they journey to different locations for others to see. On their way to Lexington, other groups joined in on the ride along the way. "When you touch it, there's life in it. It's the lives of the people that died in the towers," said Ride Captain, Bobby Lipes. Since 2001 the flag has been in the possession of different motorcycle groups across the nation. 4 years ago, it was given to the Virginia Patriot Guard Riders who continue to carry out the mission.
