Peoria Fire to hire 11 new firefighters with $4 million grant Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger announced that the Peoria Fire Department has been awarded the SAFER grant Wednesday. The $4 million will go towards hiring 11 new firefighters to help staff Engine 2. "45% of that of those 11 is from minority and protected class, so that's extremely exciting as well. Knowing that you have engine two back solidified with federal money is a big deal to our workforce, to our department, to me personally," said Sollberger. Right now, Engine 2 is being staffed with overtime staff. "The level of morale, it's been low. We have lost 37 positions, three apparatus, engine two being one of them. Knowing that we can get one back and hire 11 firefighters, in a moment I think that morale has changed," said Sollberger WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Chicago Tylenol murders: 2 firefighters tied deaths together in 40 year old unsolved case that began with a terrifying medical mystery A suburban police detective climbs the steps of the main Cook County criminal courthouse in hopes of ending a 40-year-old mystery. The Tylenol murders, as they are commonly known, have been his investigation since he assumed responsibility for the cold case more than 15 years ago. Now, he and several other law enforcement officials believe they have solved the killings. They just need prosecutors to agree with them, to take the risky step of indicting a 76-year-old man in a case built almost entirely on circumstantial evidence. The detective knows the odds are steep as he heads into the January 2022 meeting with top criminal investigators from the Cook County state's attorney's office. CHICAGO TRIBUNE - METERED SITE Loves Park Fire Department opens new station they say will improve response times Loves Park Fire Department officials have announced the opening of a new, long-awaited station. The department announced their new location, at 5180 Rock Valley Parkway on the east side of the city, was opening on Wednesday. The new station was a former auto body shop, remodeled to fit the needs of the Fire Department. "This location will give the Department a much-needed presence on the East side of Loves Park," Loves Park Fire Chief Jerry Wiltfang says. "It will cut our response time in this area by one-third." Back in February, 13 WREX reported that the Loves Park City Council approved the $1.5 million project. All funding was through the federal American Rescue Plan Act. WREX-TV NBC 13 ROCKFORD Construction Crews Hit Natural Gas Line near Crystal Lake, Cause Major Gas Leak Construction crews damaged a large gas line and caused a major gas leak Wednesday evening near Crystal Lake, prompting road closures that remain in place this evening. The Nunda Rural Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff's Office responded around 3:01 p.m. Wednesday to Route 176 and Nish Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake. Nunda Rural Fire Protection District Communication Specialist Alex Vucha said the district was notified of a ruptured natural gas line in the area. Firefighters arrived within minutes and confirmed a large, non-residential natural gas line had been struck by construction crews. Vucha said immediate road closures were requested due to the large quantity of natural gas being released from the line. CRYSTAL LAKE-CARY PATCH Firefighters Extinguish House Fire In Evanston A two-alarm fire broke out Tuesday in a three-story Evanston home as contractors worked on the house, fire officials said. Fire crews were dispatched to the 1000 block of Greenwood Street around 4 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a house fire, according to Division Chief Kim Kull. Contractors, who were able to get out of the house before firefighters arrived, reported spotting flames in a void space near the roof. The first firefighters on scene opened up the ceiling and used a pair of hoses to get water onto the fire, Kull said. Fire conditions quickly changed, and commanders escalated the fire department's response to a second alarm. Several departments from neighboring communities came to assist. EVANSTON PATCH Carlinville fire district inviting community to open house The fire protection district is holding its yearly open house on from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 1. The event at the firehouse, 317 W. Second South St., will include tours and demonstrations. Children will be able to have their picture taken with firetrucks and go through the training house. Ambulances from the Gillespie-Benld Area Ambulance Service and a helicopter from Arch Air Medical will be on site to tour. MY JOURNAL COURIER PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEOS: Questions raised about infrastructure after semi-truck goes off Texas overpass, killing driver An investigation is underway after a truck driver died when an 18-wheeler went off a highway overpass in Allen, Texas, and officials are also looking into the road's infrastructure. The crash happened Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of U.S. 75 and Stacy Road. Dash camera video from a witness showed the semi-truck plummeting off the U.S. 75 overpass and bursting into flames. Allen police said it appeared the semi-truck collided with another vehicle, which caused it to go off the highway. The driver of the semi-truck died and was later identified as Gustavo Gomez, 71. The United States Postal Service said Gomez was a contractor who transported mail for the agency. The investigation into his death includes the now 7-year-old retaining wall barrier that engineers admit was not designed to contain a vehicle of that size. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Florida firefighters 'camp' in RV as city inches toward construction of $2 million fire station PHOTOS: For almost a year, a Keystone Cougar recreational vehicle in Haney Creek Park has been the home of Stuart Fire Rescue temporary Station No. 3. Two firefighters rotate through 24-hour shifts in a camp-like environment, parked next to a gazebo with a smoker and grill at the ready. And unlike crews staffing Stuart's two existing fire stations — on Southeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Southeast Monterey Road — personnel tend to parkgoers who ask for Band-Aids or need help catching their runaway dog. "I've chased a couple of dogs," admitted firefighter/paramedic Drew Edwards. "It's obviously different than being at a fire station." Edwards and other firefighters operating out of the RV have been responding to emergency calls north of Northwest Wright Boulevard, Chief Vince Felicione said. TCPALM - METERED SITE New high-tech scan helps former Southern California firefighter extinguish prostate cancer in its earliest stages VIDEO: New technology that's allowing doctors to pinpoint prostate cancer long before it becomes a threat is now widely available. A former firefighter mentioned how this new imaging technique helped him extinguish prostate cancer before it spread. "I think firefighters tend to be aggressive," said retired Colton Fire Chief Thomas Hendrix. Eight years ago, doctors diagnosed him with prostate cancer and he knew exactly what he wanted to do. "Initially, it was just surgery, and the surgery went quite well and it looked like things were fine," Hendrix said. Things were fine until six months later when Hendrix's prostate-specific antigen levels started to rise again. The next plan of attack was 35 rounds of proton radiation therapy. The radiation therapy seemed to work and Hendrix thought he had beaten his cancer until a few years later. CHICAGO TRIBUNE - METERED SITE Central Pennsylvania firefighters train with military helicopters VIDEO: On Wednesday, over a hundred firefighters from throughout central Pa. gathered at Fort Indiantown Gap for emergency training, each one learning about the different military helicopters that fly from the base. "They're going through four stations, which include orientation to the CH-47 Shanook, the UH-60 Blackhawk, and UH-72 Lakota," said Aviation Safety Officer Danielle Watkins. Watkins says this is the first-time local fire departments were brought on base for this kind of training. "We brought them here to build a relationship, report with them, to talk about the important things to note," said Watkins. The goal of the program is to get fire crews familiar with these complex military helicopters, so they know what to do in case of an emergency. WPMT-TV FOX 43 YORK PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
