An Illinois man died after his truck was struck by a train Monday afternoon. At about 1:54 p.m., Will County Sheriff's deputies responded to a fatal train versus pickup truck crash. The incident occurred at Murphy and Cooper Roads in Wilmington Township. According to initial reports, at about 1:20 p.m., a northbound BNSF freight train struck a GMC Sierra 2500 that was heading westbound when it was struck. The truck came to rest upside down about 150 feet north of the crossing. "It's one of those ones that you just shake your head and say ‘Why?'" said John Cairns who lives near the accident scene. The crossing signal, signal bells and crossing gates were still operating after the incident occurred, authorities said. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO A fire shut down the Benton Walmart for more than an hour Monday night. Employees tell News 3 the fire started in the clothing section. Benton Fire Department and Abbott EMS responded to the call around 7:30 p.m. First responders say no one was hurt in the fire, but the whole store had to be evacuated. Employees say they followed orders to stay safe. "Next thing you know we're hearing, "Hey, go out the back, there's a fire like out the dispensing doors, that's the doors we went out of and we eventually went out and went to that dirt end road and sort of just waited and now we're going back in, I guess," said one employee. WSIL-TV ABC 3 HARRISBURG Charges have been filed for a Washington man who allegedly stabbed his sister multiple times and torched their house on Sunday. David Naffziger, 50, was arrested for attempted first-degree murder, aggravated arson, and aggravated domestic battery, according to Tazewell County Sheriff Jeff Lower. As previously reported, police were called to the home on Schuck Road in rural Washington at 4:03 p.m. Sunday. Lower said David allegedly stabbed his sister Lindsey Naffziger, 64, multiple times and at some point set the home on fire. While the home was deemed a total loss, Lindsey was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive. David is currently in the Tazewell County Jail. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA A home's attic and roof took heavy damage in a Monday evening Urbana fire, responders said. Firefighters said they found heavy smoke when they responded at about 5 p.m. to a house at the corner of Busey Avenue and Indiana Avenue. Responders had the fire out about a half hour later. VIDEO: Firefighters in Johnson County are still on the scene of a large wooden pallet fire. They had to put their battle against the stubborn blaze on hold briefly Monday night because of a tornado threat. The fire is burning at a wooden pallet plant in Lillian, which is about 30 miles south of Fort Worth. Investigators believe it started around 10:30 p.m. Monday because of a lightning strike. Firefighters had to work quickly because the plant is in an area surrounded by homes. As many as 15 fire departments were called in to help battle the flames. At one point, they had to take shelter because there were reports of a possible tornado on the ground nearby. Alvarado Fire Captain Brad Hargrove told FOX 4 it was one of the scariest situations he's had to deal with. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS In 1971, a fire broke out in the vacant Heyday Shoe building, once a maker of women's wear. Smoke rose high above the old manufacturing district west of downtown. The dark column was but a foreshadow. The fire burned away the roof and windows at 2032 Locust Street, but the seven-story brick walls remained. Five years later, a city agency owned the hulk. There was talk of selling it for a parking lot. It sat empty with a skeletal interior of heavy timbers and no roof — a perfect flue, as a fire official later would say. Shortly after 4 p.m. on April 2, 1976, fire broke out again inside the Heyday. A nearby businessman heard an explosion and saw flames. He probably heard the fireball erupt. It quickly raged through the Heyday and jumped across Locust to the St. Louis Housing Authority warehouse, then to other buildings along Locust. A firestorm was on. ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH - METERED SITE VIDEO/PHOTOS: Steven Matto shoots some of the most intense fire scene photos ever taken. It's just that most people don't get a chance to see them. Matto, 54, is the official photographer for many Alle-Kiski Valley fire companies, documenting more than 700 emergencies. His photos are used by fire companies to document their responses as learning tools. Only rarely do they make it into a newspaper or onto television. Recently, though, illness and the loss of a leg have kept him on the sidelines, unable to document the courage and hard work of the volunteers who run into burning buildings instead of away from them. Now, those firefighters are rallying to help their photographer recuperate. A stubborn infection started by a plantar wart required his left leg to be amputated above the knee. Local fire companies are rallying to raise money for Matto's medical and living expenses. PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW Seventy-five dogs were killed in a fire at a Texas pet resort last September. When the fire occurred, there was no staffing overnight at the time and no sprinkler system was in place. Changes to the fire codes in Georgetown, Texas, have already been approved for animal care facilities. Locally, it appears Palm Beach County's fire code for sprinklers is stricter than the state's code. What happened at the Ponderosa Pet Resort in Texas is a real fear for pet owners who use boarding facilities. "There's a lot of care, there's a lot of affection that goes into it, so of course you want them to be taken care of by somebody who will care about them as much as you do," said Lyndon Brown, a local pet owner. Brown has had his pit bull mix Mia for six years. "I always joke and say she's the longest relationship I've had, so they do become like your children," Brown said. WPTV NBC 5 WEST PALM BEACH |
