Chicago Fire Department Announces Funeral Services For 2 Firefighters Who Died in Line of Duty Chicago fire officials have announced funeral arrangements for two Chicago firefighters who died last week in the line of duty. The visitation for Lt. Jan Tchoryk will take place Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m. at Cumberland Chapels in suburban Norridge, Chicago fire officials said. Tchoryk's funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St Joseph Ukrainian Church in Chicago. Tchoryk died battling an extra-alarm blaze in a high-rise building on the morning of April 5 in the Gold Coast neighborhood. Tchoryk was a 26-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department. A day earlier, firefighter Jermaine Pelt died responding to a house fire in the West Pullman neighborhood. Pelt's visitation will be held Thursday from 3 to 10 p.m. at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home in suburban Oak Lawn. His funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at House of Hope in Chicago. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO Chicago Fire Department battles extra-alarm fire at vacant church in Bridgeport VIDEO: The Chicago Fire Department battled an extra-alarm fire in the Bridgeport neighborhood Monday morning. Chicago firefighters responded at about 8:22 a.m. to the fire in the 2900-block of South Archer Avenue. At one point the smoke enveloped several city blocks. More than 100 emergency personnel were rushed to the scene. Fire officials said the fire appeared to have broken out inside a vacant church. Firefighters tacking the flames from the outside had, at one point, three elevated lines going simultaneously. "The fire got into the trusses and we immediately evacuated them back out of the building," said CFD Chief Jim McDonough. "Bowstring truss is one of our most dangerous fires." And with two two-story buildings on either side, letting the fire consume the church was not an option. Residents from both adjacent buildings were able to get out safely. A look back: Photos of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, its aftermath On April 15, 2013, Dzhokar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev walked to a crowded area near the finish line of the Boston Marathon with backpacks containing homemade pressure-cooker shrapnel bombs filled with BBs and nails. The two brothers separated, each finding a spot packed with spectators to place their bombs. Dzhokar Tsarnaev picked the sidewalk near the crowded outdoor patio of a restaurant, just behind several children watching the race. At about 2:49 that afternoon, more than five hours after the first people left from Hopkinton's starting line and with thousands of runners still on the course, the two bombs detonated. The blasts killed 8-year-old Martin Richard, 23-year-old Boston University student Lingzi Lu and 29-year-old restaurant manager Krystle Campbell. The terrorist attack consigned several others "to a lifetime of unimaginable suffering," the Justice Department noted in a 2021 brief. THE REPUBLICAN - MASSLIVE Indiana fire department recovering after tornado VIDEO: The EF3 tornado in Whiteland didn't just damage homes and businesses. It also made a direct hit on public safety, tearing through the community's fire station, causing serious damage. "It picked up all kinds of debris. It ripped the roof off the front side," said Whiteland Fire Chief Eric Funkhouser. "Really peeled it off." Just five minutes before it hit and caused a portion of the station to collapse, fire crews inside the exact area that collapsed got sent on a call that may have saved their lives. Their bunk rooms took the brunt of the storm. "They had actually gone to bed that night and were in that room," Funkhouser said. "This is where all the firefighter beds are. Some of the bed frames have been damaged. All of the ceiling collapsed down on top of them. The roof collapsed down. The trusses, everything, fell into that room." WTHR-TV NBC 13 INDIANAPOLIS Injured Kentucky officer, former firefighter 'ran towards the gunfire' to save lives during mass shooting VIDEO: Louisville Metro Police Officer Nickolas Wilt had been with the department less than two weeks before a mass shooter opened fire at a downtown bank Monday morning. He "ran towards the fire" to "save lives", and was shot in the head in the process, police said. Five victims were killed and several others -- including Wilt -- were injured in the shooting at Old National Bank. UofL Health said two other officers were injured. The shooter, identified by police as 25-year-old Connor Sturgeon, was killed in a shootout with police. As of Monday afternoon, Wilt was listed in critical condition after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound to the head. Wilt worked for the LaGrange Fire Department for seven years before becoming a police officer, we have learned. WHAS-TV ABC 11 LOUISVILLE Related: Gunman livestreamed mass shooting at Louisville bank that left 5 dead and 8 injured, police say Texas fire-rescue implements new measures to improve mental health among firefighters VIDEO: A firefighter's shift is unpredictable. After calls, they can physically clean off debris. But the things they see can often leave a mental stain. According to Dallas Fire-Rescue, six Dallas firefighters have attempted suicide since 2018. Four of them died. In their honor, the department and union are pushing for improved mental health resources. "We don't know what's going on inside people's heads," said Jim McDade, President of the Dallas Fire Fighters Association. "One of the members of the department that committed suicide was my best friend." He remembers Nov. 13, 2021, when Capt. Kenny Crutcher took his own life. McDade talked to him that day, and everything seemed normal. "With Kenny -- with a lot of these guys -- we didn't see it coming," McDade said. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
