Chicago: Woman dies in Lincoln Park apartment fire A woman died after a cooking fire broke out at a Lincoln Park apartment building Tuesday morning, according to the Chicago Fire Department. Firefighters responded to a blaze around 6:50 a.m. when smoke alarms went off in the hallway outside a third-floor studio apartment at 2322 N. Commonwealth Ave., CFD spokesman Larry Langford said. They quickly found the woman, in her mid-50s, in cardiac arrest and began CPR, Langford said. Paramedics brought her to Saint Joseph Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The fire was contained to the studio apartment and there was no word of other displacements, Langford said. There was a lot of smoke but little fire, and the blaze was extinguished quickly, he said. A preliminary investigation found that the cause of the fire was "unattended cooking," Langford said. Autopsy results haven't been released. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Explosion, Fire Leads To Partial Collapse Of Garage In Crystal Lake A propane gas tank exploded during a garage fire in Crystal Lake Sunday evening, and strong winds lead to the blaze quickly spreading through the home, according to fire officials. The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded to the fire at 1396 Boxwood Lane at 5:25 p.m. on Sunday. Residents living at the home were able to safely get out without being injured, according to a news release from the fire department. The fire caused the second floor above the garage to collapse. Strong wind conditions led to the blaze spreading into the attic area of the home on Boxwood Lane and through the rest of the house, according to the news release. Fire officials determined an explosion reported during the fire was from a 20-pound propane tank meant for grilling, which ruptured. The blaze was brought under control by 6:36 p.m. CRYSTAL LAKE-CARY PATCH Quincy police, fire chiefs say 2023 fiscal year will be a year of 'rebuilding' The 2023 fiscal year is expected to be a year of "rebuilding" for the Quincy Police and Fire departments, according to Chiefs Rob Copley and Bernie Vahlkamp. The police department submitted a $15.3 million spending plan, which is 4.76% over the current revised fiscal 2022 budget, during a budget hearing on Monday. Copley said this is the largest budget he has presented as police chief. Vahlkamp said the fire department is proposing a $12.9 million spending plan, which is 4.96% above the fiscal 2022 revised budget. Salaries and benefits currently are up 3.35% overall, which includes a 2.75% contractual raise for union firefighters. "Our overtime budget is also staying high because we're still running short at this time," Vahlkamp said. Vahlkamp said he is looking to hire two new firefighters, which might not be done until November. QUINCY HERALD-WHIG Springfield Fire donates used trucks to Southern Illinois village The Springfield Fire Department is paying it forward. The department donated two of its gently used rigs to a smaller fire department. Engines 16 and 17 are now at their home in Elizabethtown. The small town is located on the southeast border of the state near Kentucky. "Some of these smaller communities, their apparatus are 40, 50, 60 years old," said Chief Brandon Blough with the Springfield Fire Department. "So for them to get a 27-year-old, 28-year-old piece of apparatus that they can put into service is a good improvement." The two were purchased in 1994 and had most recently served in the reserve fleet. Along with the 2 trucks, they got other supplies including a generator, nozzles, and hoses. WICS/WRSP-TV ABC 20 SPRINGFIELD Pump it up: Alton firefighters training this week There's more to firefighting than pointing water at something hot. On Monday, instructors from the Fire Service Institute at the University of Illinois began four days of pump operating tactics being taught to area firefighters at the Don Twichell Memorial Fire Station. Some of the training is refresher in nature, but it can help firefighter engineers develop skills for when they are put in a demanding role at a complex fire scene. Engineers receive separate training on the Alton Fire Department equipment and are trained with managing multiple tasks, most of which involve at least some mathematics. An average fire truck can pump hundreds of gallons of water per minute, depending on the size and condition of infrastructure, water mains and hydrants. Rural fire department pump operators often face other challenges in supplying water that are encountered less often in a city like Alton. THE TELEGRAPH PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Traffic Cameras Capture Fiery Crash Involving Suspected Impaired Driver In Minnesota A driver suspected of being under the influence crashed into a box truck on a north metro overpass Monday afternoon, causing a fiery chain reaction. The Minnesota State Patrol says the crash happened at about 2:30 p.m. on Highway 10 over MN 65 in Spring Lake Park. A MnDOT camera captured the incident, showing a speeding sedan driving erratically onto the highway from an on-ramp. The sedan strikes the front of the eastbound box truck, causing the truck driver to overcorrect and smash into the highway's side wall, nearly driving off the overpass onto MN 65. The box truck then becomes engulfed in flames. There were only two drivers involved in the crash, and both suffered injuries described as non-life threatening. Investigators suspect the driver of the sedan was "driving while impaired." The state patrol is investigating. WCCO-TV CBS 4 MINNEAPOLIS Brooklyn subway shooting leaves 16 injured, 'undetonated devices' found: FDNY VIDEOS/PHOTOS: The New York Police Department confirmed that a shooting took place at a Brooklyn subway station Tuesday morning during peak commuting hours for employees headed into Manhattan. At least 16 people were injured, Fox News has learned, up from the initial 13 reported. An NYPD spokesperson told Fox News that a shooting took place at the 36th St. station in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The department would not immediately confirm how many people were shot and whether there were any fatalities. The suspect is still at large. New York City Fire Department sources told Fox News that firefighters responded to a call for smoke in the D-N-R lines. Upon arrival, units discovered multiple people shot and several undetonated devices at the same location. It continues to be an active scene. FOX NEWS Pennsylvania: 140 years of the Lancaster city fire department A bell rings, shaking the bricks of the building below at 411 W. King St. in Lancaster. The sound is familiar – something's on fire. Horses rush from the stable behind the firehouse. Firefighters latch on their heavy equipment, driving the teams toward the smoke, hooves thundering and equipment clanking through narrow city streets. It's nearing the end of the 19th century, and the county's first paid fire department is settling into its role. The Lancaster City Bureau of Fire, which marks its 140th anniversary this month, is one of the oldest paid fire departments in Pennsylvania. The first was Philadelphia in 1871. Fourteen decades. Nearly 1,000 firefighters filed through the ranks, led by 17 chiefs. Thousands of blazes extinguished. Eleven firefighters' lives lost in the line of duty. Countless lives saved. Hundreds of properties salvaged. LNP/LANCASTER ONLINE - METERED SITE 'I wanted to scream:' Chilean woman reunites with son, a firefighter in Texas, who was stolen at birth VIDEO: A Houston firefighter opens up about being stolen shortly after birth and his journey to Chile to connect with the birth mother he never knew. Before his journey, Tyler Graf said he was just an ordinary 38-year-old man with a wife and child. "I was adopted by a very loving, caring family," Graf said. "I think it was just knowing that my story did start before I was adopted. So, it's kind of like missing the first five minutes of the movie." After becoming a father, Graf tried to learn about his birth family. Suddenly, he got a call he never expected. "That's when they sat me down and told me who I was, how they know who I am and what the true backstory really is," Graf said. He had been stolen from his birth mother, who was told her son died shortly after birth. The practice of coercive adoptions became widespread under dictator Augusto Pinochet's reign in Chile during the 1970s and 1980s. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
