Chicago firefighters battle East Chatham, Irving Park fires; several displaced VIDEO: Monday night was a busy one for Chicago firefighters, as they battled fires at two different apartment complexes. The first was about 10:30 p.m. on South Drexel Avenue in the East Chatham neighborhood. No one was injured, but several were displaced. The second fire broke out about 11:10 p.m. in the 3700-block of North Troy Street in Irving Park, Chicago police said. The second floor and back porch of a multi-unit apartment complex caught fire. Ten people and a few pets were displaced, but no one was injured. The cause of both fires is still under investigation. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Bartonville fire injures 2 firefighters An overnight fire at a Bartonville home left two firefighters with minor injuries. Before midnight Sunday, firefighters arrived at a home on Desoto Drive, which is close to Clara A. Lauterbach Park. First responders on the scene said they arrived as flames burned through the roof. West Peoria and Limestone Fire departments provided aid on the scene, while Logan Trivoli and Timber Hollis departments covered the village's station. No injuries were reported for the homeowners. The fire remains under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshall. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Chicago police say man stole ambulance, chased him for nearly 75 miles A man was taken into custody near Dwight, Illinois Monday evening after he stole a Chicago Fire Department ambulance and took police on a wild ride for some 75 miles down Interstate 55. Chicago Fire Department Ambulance 66 was stolen at the firehouse in Chinatown, where it is housed along with Fire Engine 8. The ambulance was soon after spotted on the Stevenson Expressway. Chicago Police abandoned pursuing the ambulance, but officers from numerous other departments chased it as the driver spoke incoherently over the radio. The ambulance kept blasting southwest on Interstate 55. Police pursued the ambulance at highway speed as the thief drove between the two lanes of southbound I-55. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO People jump from windows to escape Warrensburg apartment fire Crews were called out to battle an apartment building fire in Warrensburg Monday. Heavy flames were coming from the Diamond Apartments in the 300 block of Southland Dr. with extensive damage visible. Crews arrived to the scene around 10:30 a.m. Residents told WAND TV they had to jump from second story windows to escape the fire. One person was trapped for a period of time, but was able to get out. Everyone did get out of the building, but one person did tell our crew they were not able to save their pets. Another couple tossed their dog out of the window to save it. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR Pekin City Council approves budget highlighted by fire department upgrades Despite objections from two elected officials, the Pekin City Council has approved a budget for the next fiscal year that includes major fire department upgrades. The council, on a 4-2 vote, approved general fund spending to exceed $39.2 million and more than $37 million in capital projects. Council members Rick Hilst and Lloyd Orrick voted no. Hilst said the city should have placed a higher priority on street improvements, while Orrick objected to the way the city plans on spending business development district funds on projects that aren't necessarily tied to business growth. On March 18, Heart of Illinois ABC reported about the fire department's $12 million project that Pekin's fire chief said are necessary because of higher call volume. Whitewater Center in Tennessee used for 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics destroyed in fire VIDEO/PHOTOS: An early morning fire destroyed the Ocoee Whitewater Center Tuesday. The venue served as the host site for paddling events, such as kayaking and canoeing, during the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. Years later, it remained a popular spot for locals and tourists with the waters of the Ocoee River surging just steps beyond the center's back doors, with sweeping views from the balcony. The river's flow was modified to create the paddling venues, with grandstands and observation towers added for the Olympics. TDOT crews in the area saw the structure on fire and 12 area fire departments responded to the site. Crews report the fire has been contained, but an investigation will begin as to the fire's origin. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says that an agent has responded to the scene of the fire to assist in the investigation. WRCB-TV NBC 3 CHATTANOOGA Texas: Mechanical engineering students design device for fire department VIDEO: A group from one of West Texas A&M University's mechanical engineering classes Monday unveiled a device designed and built for the Randall County Fire Department as their spring project. Developed as a project over the 16-week class, the device is designed to make rolling up a fire hose after a fire become less time and manpower consuming. In most cases, the winding up and squeezing of water out of the hoses takes a few men to do the operation and, many times, is done after many hours of work on a fire site. WT Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Fisseha Alemayehu, said the class called advanced mechanics and design is all about students putting their classwork into implementing actual designs. He said that with many limitations, especially time, his class stepped up and created a beneficial device that would be used in the community. AMARILLO-GLOBE NEWS FDNY puts up first all-women rescue paramedic team in national EMS competition in Indiana The FDNY is about to make "herstory" — and they may get a trophy out of it. For the first time, the department is sending an all-women rescue paramedic team to test its life-saving skills against other first responders in a national competition, the FDNY said. The four life-savers fly to Indiana to compete in the 2022 Journal of Emergency Medical Services (JEMS) Conference and Expo, where they will run through three realistic, high-pressure scenarios to see if they can assess injuries and provide care quickly and accurately. The competition begins today and runs through Friday, when the top three teams will take part in a 20 minute, high-energy scenario where paramedics will manage multiple patients at one time. Whoever wins gets a trophy — and, of course, bragging rights. "It's about time," said EMS Lt. Allison Shaughnessy, who works out of EMS' Haz-Tac Battalion. NEW YORK DAILY NEWS - METERED SITE Alaska firefighter, athlete overcomes challenges to win Ski Ultramarathon Jaclyn Arndt is 31 years old and works for the Homer Fire Department as a firefighter and EMT. But her new passion is ultra-marathon racing. Earlier this month, she became the first female skier to finish the Iditarod Trail Invitational (or ITI), a 350-mile course from Knik Lake to McGrath. It's pretty impressive considering she just started marathon racing within the last two years. "Before I never ran more than six miles," she said. "But I did my first marathon in the triathlon last year." The triathlon she referenced was the Iron Man triathlon, which is widely considered one of the most challenging sporting events in the world. Iron Man athletes swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and then run a marathon. For Arndt's most recent race, the ITI, participants choose to run, bike, or ski. KBBI-AM 890 HOMER COVID-19 data reporting is becoming less frequent, making trends harder to track Many states are scaling back on how often they report key COVID-19 statistics, a shift that some experts worry might hinder efforts to mitigate outbreaks and negative effects of the coronavirus. A year ago, all 50 states were reporting new COVID-19 cases on a daily basis. But that has gradually trailed off. This week, Pennsylvania will be the latest state to switch from daily to weekly updates, leaving just six states that will still be reporting new COVID-19 cases every day of the week. About half of states now report just once a week, with Florida down to every two weeks. There have always been fluctuations in daily reporting, making the seven-day average of daily change a smoother way to track trends than single day-to-day change. But scaling back makes the trends even bumpier; it's harder to isolate whether a week-over-week increase in cases is a true trend or the result of a data dump. CNN HEALTH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
