| We Can Do It Better Author: Dave Winnacker, Fire Chief, Moraga-Orinda Fire District Growing interest in wildfire risk reduction in the Wildland Urban Interface has led to the implementation of strategies designed for our forested landscapes in ways that are not optimized to the unique challenges of the WUI. These strategies often involve the construction of fuel breaks without considering access for firefighting resources, undermining the purpose of these projects. Given the size of the problem, it is critical that limited resources be employed to maximum effect as part of a comprehensive risk reduction system and a landscape level approach, featuring distributed treatments (SPLATS) to disrupt fire pathways, offers a better way of achieving our goals. read more |

Hazardous Lake Michigan conditions put Chicago first responders in danger during rescue VIDEO: A morning swim during hazardous conditions in Lake Michigan on Sunday turned into a dramatic, large-scale rescue that also put first responders in danger. A Beach Hazard Warning was in effect at the time of the rescue. CBS 2 Investigator Megan Hickey had the story. The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project said those signs are often missed or ignored. Fortunately, the swimmer in this case survived, but experts said more needs to be done to prevent scenes like Sunday's. If it's not obvious enough from the crashing waves, a red flag at a Chicago beach means conditions do not meet safe swimming standards and no one should be in the water. "The waves are crashing so hard, so I would just suggest people be careful," said Erika Zermeno. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Good Samaritan Pulls Driver From Burning Car In Round Lake A Good Samaritan pulled a driver from his burning car after it crashed on Route 120 and Wildspring Road in Round Lake Sunday night. The 2020 Tesla Model 3 was found in flames, which were coming from the occupant compartment and a compartment that stored the car's lithium battery, when fire crews arrived at about 10 p.m. Two other fire departments assisted at the scene and it took fire crews one hour and 45 minutes and about 10,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze, according to a news release from the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District. The vehicle had to be flipped to its side so firefighters could gain better access to the battery to put the blaze out, according to fire officials. GRAYSLAKE PATCH Firefighters respond to South Peoria house fire deemed to be electrical A Peoria fire investigator said the issues with a home's electrical system led to a house fire this morning that caused $20,000. Firefighters were called at 4:25 a.m. to 2900 SW Jefferson Ave., for the fire. When they arrived, they found a 1 1/2-story home with smoke coming from the attic. Crews were able to locate the fire in a rear wall and ceiling with a thermal imaging camera. They opened up the walls and quickly put out the fire with a hose. Smoke and water caused damage throughout much of the home. Two people were able to flee the home without any injury but will now need to find a new place to leave. The local chapter of the American Red Cross was called out to help with housing. There were no injuries reported. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: 3 firefighters hurt, dozens displaced after blaze tears through 3 triple-deckers in Massachusetts Three firefighters were taken to the hospital and 30 people were displaced after a fire spread through three triple-decker homes in Dorchester Monday afternoon, officials said. The fire started shortly before 2:30 p.m. Speaking with reporters later, Boston's fire commissioner said the fire appeared to have started in a basement area of a building at 20 Irma Street before rising through the back of the structure, punching through the roof and spreading to two neighboring buildings. All three buildings were a total loss, the commissioner said. SKY7-HD was over the scene shortly before 3 p.m., showing a large plume of smoke over the area. Numerous fire crews were also spotted pouring water on some of the flames. While heavy fire conditions had been knocked down as of 3:05 p.m., the Boston Fire Department said crews were continuing to chase hot spots. WHDH-TV ABC 7 BOSTON San Francisco fire chief says autonomous vehicles aren't ready for prime time at California PUC meeting VIDEO: The debate over the future of self-driving cars is picking up steam. Safety was the top concern at Monday's California Public Utilities Commission meeting, bringing autonomous vehicle companies Waymo and Cruise face to face with first responders who've raised concerns about the vehicles. San Francisco Fire Chief Jeanine Nicholson said there have been more than 50 cases of the self-driving vehicles interfering with or impeding emergency responders so far this year. "I appreciate the safety that autonomous vehicles can bring to the table in terms of no drunk drivers, no speeding, all of that kind of stuff," said Chief Nicholson. "However, they're still not ready for prime time because of how they've impacted our operations." Waymo and Cruise both cite safety statistics saying their vehicles are safe. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO $4M National Institutes of Health grant will test worksite sleep health coaching for Arizona firefighters A $4 million award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, a division of the National Institutes of Health, will allow researchers in the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health to identify key factors for the successful implementation of workplace sleep coaching to improve sleep health in Arizona firefighters. Almost half of career firefighters report short sleep and poor sleep quality, and about 37% of firefighters screen positive for sleep disorders like sleep apnea, insomnia or shift work disorder, according to research led by the Harvard Work Hours Health and Safety Group. Unfortunately, firefighters face unique barriers, including long working shifts and mandatory overtime, that can prevent them from using evidence-based interventions to improve sleep.
