Quincy Fire Department sees record year for calls It was a record-breaking year with over 4,500 calls for service for the Quincy Fire Department in 2022. The Quincy Central Fire Station finds staffing levels at the lowest they've been in more than 50 years; that's forcing a lot of staff, already spread thin, to work even more. The Quincy Fire Department received more than 4,500 calls for service in 2022. Quincy Fire Chief Bernard Vahlkamp said that the 2023 year is starting off busy with lots of calls already. Some firefighters wish they had more help to answer those calls. Firefighter Bryan Meyer said the pressures of working overtime are starting to effect them physically and mentally. "It's definitely a burden that everybody keeps in mind, but we all pull our weight to cover these shorter staffed times and we put in the extra hours to really help out," Meyer said. WGEM-TV NBC 10 QUINCY Rockford agrees to pay bump for police, firefighters Rockford City Council on Monday agreed to new labor agreements with the unions representing the Rockford police and fire departments, increasing salaries for public safety by $16.1 million. Rockford Police Department officers represented by the Police Benevolent & Protective Association Unit 6 will see a 3.5% wage increase in 2023, 2024 and 2025. The increases will total $8.9 million in additional salaries over the life of the agreement. The police department's annual budget totals $76.6 million in 2023. Among new provisions of the police contract is a pilot program that will convert the afternoon Rockford police shift to a 12-hour shift. Rockford patrol officers until now have worked 10-hour shifts, a system that has for years been thought to be inefficient and expensive. WEEK-TV NBC 25 PEORIA Sterling Fire Department donates retired fire engine to Ukraine Engine One has served the City of Sterling for over 20 years, it will continue its service, but not in the normal way one would think. The retired engine will go toward safety and rescue efforts in Ukraine. "It all just came together at the right time and at the right moment," said Sterling's City Manager, Scott Schumard. "The value of a used fire truck in the US just isn't there once is reaches over 20 years of age, we just thought we could get a lot more use of it in Ukraine than trying to find another department in the U.S. that could make a good use of it." Schumard partnered with a group called "U.S. Ambulances for Ukraine", which started donating ambulances to Ukraine to provide frontline support amid the Russian and Ukrainian War. It started with one ambulance and quickly trickled into several more; even spanning into fire engine donations. WREX-TV NBC 13 ROCKFORD PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |
