'A fireman's fireman': Legacy in stone, services set for Retired Herrin Fire Chief Lindell Coriasco A firefighter for more than half his life, Lindell Coriasco earned the name 'sparky' from his friends and colleagues over the years. "I don't know why that is," said Herrin Fire Chief Shawn Priddy, "That's what they called him." "It's not that he sparked fires right," the reporter asked. "No. He did the opposite," Priddy laughed. But Coriasco sparked a number of changes to the Herrin Fire Department in his 42 years of service. Coriasco died Friday in Memphis, Tennessee from injuries sustained in a car crash last month. Coriasco was 83-years old. Services are being held Saturday at Williamson County Fire Station #1 in Marion starting at 10 a.m. with a public visitation. The funeral is at 1pm. WSIL-TV ABC 3 HARRISBURG Fire at vacant Peoria home causes $50,000 in damage A house fire early Sunday morning caused $50,000 in damage, the Peoria Fire Department reported. Firefighters were called to 1001 NE Monroe St., at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday on a report of a structure fire. When they arrived, they saw large flames coming out of a second-story window and the roof of the vacant home, said Battalion Chief Steve Rada in a news release. Crews had to force their way into building to begin to battle the blaze which extended into the attic. Several extra crews were called into help with the firefighting efforts. A cause of the fire, which caused $50,000 in damage, has not be determined. No one was home at the time and there were no injuries reported. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Massive fire engulfs former church building in Alabama neighborhood Fire crews in Birmingham are currently investigating the cause of a major fire of a church in Ensley. The incident took place at the intersection of Five Points West Avenue and Avenue S. No injuries have been reported. Local resident and Ensley Highlands neighborhood president, Antwon Womack, shed light on the history of the church, describing it as a community pillar in the past. However, he expressed concerns about the building's condition, fearing an incident like this would occur. The church, known as the Warriors of the Words Church, according to Womack, has remained vacant for at least a decade. Birmingham Fire and Rescue crews swiftly responded to the fire Monday afternoon, with flames and smoke billowing from the structure. For Josh Scott, kayaking is a job and his passion. "We rent kayaks out of the Emerald Necklace here in the Cleveland metro parks," said Scott, manager and lead guide for 41 North Coastal Adventures. Scott spends his days teaching people how to paddle and not flip in their kayaks so they don't have to be saved by fire departments like Sheffield Lake. In Sheffield Lake, they've seen so many water rescues that they decided to invest their equipment dollars in buying two new jet skis. "We can get really close to victims without hurting them, like with a bigger boat, you need more manpower," said Lieutenant Brian Davis, Sheffield Lake Fire Department.
