South Beloit appoints new mayor, fire chief Familiar faces in new places as a new wave of leadership hits the Stateline as the city of South Beloit appoints a new mayor and fire chief. A transition for one South Beloit council member to the city's mayor and another man will be splitting time between fire stations in two different states to lead the South Beloit Fire Department. The positions will be different, but their attitude to improve the city doesn't change. Former Accounts and Finance Commissioner Thomas Fitzgerald is the new South Beloit mayor. Fitzgerald says he's worked with retired mayor Ted Rehl for seven years and is a South Beloit native, so this change of power is nothing too daunting. "We're all one vote. So I'll just be the leader of the council, but I don't believe there's any to me it's the same," says Mayor Fitzgerald. WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD Joliet Fire Department Helps Save Dangling Cab Hanging Over Houbolt Road PHOTO: The Joliet Fire Department, with crews from stations 6 and 7, responded to a report of a single semi-truck accident on I-80 with the cab hanging over Houbolt Rd. Upon arrival, crews found the driver was still in the cab and only the weight of the trailer was keeping the cab from falling onto Houbolt Rd. Tower 6 was placed over the top of the cab and assisted the driver from the cab and into the basket. The driver suffered very minor injuries and was transported to Ascension St. Joes in good condition. The Illinois State Police are investigating the incident. WJOL-AM 1340 CHICAGO Family saved from Edwardsville house fire Just before 5 p.m. Sunday, the Edwardsville Fire Department responded to a structure fire at a single-family residence in the 100 block of Fourth Avenue. Fire Captain Bob Morgan said that upon arrival, heavy fire was observed in the garage and had moved to the roof and back of the single-family home with a lower level or walk-out garage. The family was home at the time and was safely evacuated by first responders, including an elderly female who normally uses a wheelchair. The homeowner and a police officer evacuated her to safety and she was uninjured, Morgan said. Edwardsville Fire Department Dep. Chief and Incident Commander Brendan McKee moved the fire to a second alarm, which brought additional fire suppression and EMS units to the scene. The fire lasted for roughly one hour before it was declared under control. THE INTELLIGENCER Life ring saves life at North Avenue Beach days after Gov. Pritzker signs news bill Of the Great Lakes, experts say Lake Michigan has the highest rate of drownings. But just days after Governor JB Pritzker signed a new law mandating lifesaving rings be installed on all piers and drop-off points along Lake Michigan, a life was saved at North Avenue Beach. "A person on the lakefront saw someone struggling in the water. They stayed dry. They grabbed a life ring," said Dave Benhamin, co-founder and executive director of Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project. "They threw it in. They helped pull the person out. They saved a life. they put the life ring back. And then everyone went on with their day." By the time first responders arrived, everyone was safely out of the water, exactly as the Lake Michigan Rescue Equipment Act envisioned. The bill was proposed after the death of 19-year-old Miguel Cisneros in August 2021. The Columbia student drown in Rogers Park with no life ring nearby. In their anguish, his family campaigned for the act. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Apartment fire spreads to neighboring home in Florida An apartment fire that destroyed a six-unit complex on Beach Avenue in Atlantic Beach early Tuesday morning spread to a home that was just 5 feet away, causing severe damage to that home also, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said. JFRD spokesman Capt. Eric Prosswimmer said thankfully no injuries were reported in the multi-unit apartment fire. Firefighters were called to the area around 1:45 a.m. and arrived within three minutes. Neighbors told News4JAX they were knocking on each other's doors to alert each other to the fire. They were still processing what happened as the sun came up Tuesday. "Some are fairly traumatized by it," neighbor Scott Cairns said. "One of the owners of the houses that burned down said he'd lived there for 40 years and lost everything other than the pants he was wearing when he walked out the door." WJAX-TV CBS 47 JACKSONVILLE National Remembrance of Fallen Firefighters Moves to May Starting in 2023 As we prepare for Memorial Weekend 2022 in October we're looking ahead to next year and the start of a new National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) tradition. Beginning in 2023 Memorial Weekend moves to May. A combination of weather uncertainties and the frequent threat of an October federal government shutdown is behind the move of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend from its traditional October date. NFFF Board chairman Troy Markel said, "As with everything NFFF does, the priority is making sure we do right by the families of the firefighters we're honoring." This move does not impact this year's ceremony. The 2022 Memorial Weekend is still scheduled for October 8 and 9. The change means 2023 Memorial Weekend will be May 6 and 7. While the time of year for the Candlelight and Memorial Services changes, our other four decades long traditions will continue. NATIONAL FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS FOUNDATION Remote-control nozzle helped Nebraska firefighters battle three-alarm blaze PHOTOS: The three-alarm fire at Nox-Crete a week ago took thousands of gallons of water, at least 50 firefighters and a full night of tireless work to get under control. But fire crews had additional help from a high-tech gadget: a remote-control nozzle attached to the top of a 105-foot aerial ladder. Five fire trucks in the Omaha Fire Department fleet are equipped with this technology, which allows firefighters to operate the ladder and hose from the ground. This serves the dual purpose of keeping firefighters safe and allowing them to get the best vantage point. "It helps so that we can actually walk around the truck and look at where the optimal place would be for the nozzle to hit," Battalion Chief Scott Fitzpatrick said. From the hand-held controller, firefighters can extend and retract the ladder, control the direction of the nozzle, turn the water flow on and off and even adjust the water's spray pattern without stepping foot on the rig. In a fire like the one at Nox-Crete, a tool like this can be particularly helpful. BEATRICE DAILY SUN Wisconsin sees alarming number of residential fire deaths VIDEO: An alarming number of people died in residential fires across the state this year. That's according to the Wisconsin Fire Inspectors Association. Thirty-three people have died in residential fires, in Wisconsin, so far this year, including a massive fire in Sturgeon Bay and a small house fire in Gillett. It's a number that's sounding an alarm for those who work in the fire service. "Last year, the entire 12 months, we had 40 total. We're almost at last year's mark and we're not even halfway through the year. That's a really big deal," says Adam Dorn, assistant fire chief with Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue. And, in all of those fires, according to Dorn, there were no working smoke detectors. The Wisconsin Fire Inspectors Association is now working on educating people on the importance of smoke detectors on every level of your home and in every sleeping area as well. WBAY-TV ABC 2 GREEN BAY Hawaii fire department welcomes 9 new fire trucks with Hawaiian names honoring ali'i and the places they'll serve In an expansion of their fleet, the Honolulu Fire Department now has nine new trucks. HFD held a Hawaiian blessing at ‘Iolani Palace for the trucks, each given Hawaiian names. The names are significant because they honor King Kamehameha III, who established HFD in 1851. "The apparatus being blessed are given inoa Hawaii, honoring HFD's rich history, service of our ali'i, Kauikeaouli and Kalakaua — service of those past and present, and to highlight the unique places across Oahu. Each name relates to the area that each apparatus primarily serves. Through oral and written history, research and pule, each apparatus was given a name identifying it as part of our community, station, and HFD ohana." HAWAII NEWS NOW PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
