Peoria traffic signals will automatically turn green, flash lights as ambulance approaches Peoria first responders have formed a new Traffic Signal Preemption partnership for quicker response times. In partnership with the city and Peoria Fire Department, all Advanced Medical Transport ambulances are now equipped with Opticon Systems, a device that automatically changes traffic signals to ‘green' for ambulances during a ‘lights and siren response.' An indicator on top of traffic lights will also start flashing as the ambulance approaches. "Emergency vehicles have the ability to control the light, so that's keeping the general public safe. It's trying to control traffic flow so the emergency vehicles can get around traffic and get to where they are supposed to be," said Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Fire in Evanston displaces 2 residents An early morning fire Tuesday displaced two residents from an apartment building at 208 Custer Ave. in Evanston. Division Chief Kimberly Kull says the fire was reported about 4:30 a.m. She says firefighters found smoke and fire coming from a second-floor apartment but managed to extinguish the fire in less than 15 minutes and kept it from spreading to other units in the building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. The American Red Cross provided services for the two displaced residents. EVANSTON NOW Crews called to fire outside The Station Theatre in Urbana Firefighters were called to a fire outside The Station Theatre in Urbana early Tuesday morning. A call came in of a fire in the 200 block of N. Broadway around 2:45 a.m. Crews found a fire in the alley on the south side of the building. They were able to quickly extinguish it within minutes of arriving. Crews entered the building and determined the fire had not breached the outside wall and there was no fire inside. The damage was contained to the outside of the structure. No one was inside at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR Springfield Adds New Fire Engine and Ladder Truck to Fleet The city of Springfield, together with the Springfield Fire Department, announced Friday the addition of a brand-new fire engine and a new ladder truck to the fleet, the city said in a news release. Both have arrived and will be serving the Springfield residents in the next few weeks. The community got to see the new ladder truck Saturday during the St. Patrick's Day Parade. It was featured with the Springfield Fire Department's parade entry. "The Springfield Fire Department is recognized as ISO Class 1. That achievement is not possible without the continued support the department receives from the residents of Springfield," Mayor Jim Langfelder said. "Modernization and citywide coverage has been a strong focus for the city and its first responders. This new equipment is one more piece to ensure that the Springfield Fire Department has the necessary tools to operate at its highest level." FIRE APPARATUS MAGAZINE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Fire destroys New Hampshire business Fire officials in Littleton are investigating the cause of a fire that impacted two businesses. Fire Chief Chad Miller told News 9 the fire started shortly before 10:30 p.m. Monday on Cottage Street. He said when crews arrived, they saw flames coming from the roof and some small explosions. There are no reports of any injuries. The fire destroyed the company SBP Builders and heavily damaged another business, New England Truck Tire, Miller said. He does not believe anyone was inside when the fire broke out. WMUR-TV ABC 9 MANCHESTER Virginia fire department remembers 2014 CSX train derailment amid nationwide derailments Rail safety has been a big topic of discussion with the recent train derailments in Ohio and one as recently as last week in West Virginia. Our region is no stranger to derailments, like the 17 rail cars that fell into the James River in Lynchburg back in 2014. Next month will mark nine years since a CSX train derailed in Lynchburg, dumping thousands of gallons of fuel into the James River. Lynchburg's Battalion Chief Daniel Williams was one of the first crews to arrive on the scene that day. "When you turned the corner, everything was just black. And so the first thing we wanted to do was to make sure life safety wasn't a situation. If it is then we want to evacuate as quickly as we can," said Williams. No one was hurt and no hazardous chemicals were released from that derailment. Since then, Williams says the city has taken extra steps to prepare for future disasters. WSLS-TV NBC 10 ROANOKE Women's History Month: One-on-one with fire & rescue chief in Ohio As we continue to celebrate Women's History Month, WTOL 11 is featuring a different female leader in the community each week. This week, WTOL 11 sat down with Toledo Fire & Rescue Chief Allison Armstrong to talk about what women have inspired her and what it's like being a woman in a predominantly male field. "My goal from being a young child was 'I wanted to be a Toledo firefighter,'" said Armstrong. "Not just a firefighter, I wanted to work for Toledo." Allison Armstrong joined TFRD in 2000. She became chief in 2022. She says she didn't endure obstacles one might think being a woman in a field that is made up of predominantly men. "I do feel, I will say this, that the women who came before me really paved the way for me to say that," explained Armstrong. "I didn't feel like I experienced any of those barriers that may have been there before." WTOL-TV CBS 11 TOLEDO Treacherous flooding is about to get worse in California as another atmospheric river closes in on storm-battered residents Californians pummeled by an onslaught of dangerous storms will get deluged again as another atmospheric river threatens more deadly flooding. More than 30 million people in California were under flood watches Monday that cover much of the state, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Fresno and Sacramento. The brunt of the storm is expected to lash Northern and central California beginning late Monday and Southern California starting Tuesday. Already, a levee breach in Monterey County blamed on devastating weekend flooding has prompted evacuation alerts for thousands. And Monterey Bay residents could soon find themselves on a virtual island, cut off by more floodwater. About 20 swift-water rescue teams in more than 10 counties have been positioned ahead of the looming storm, the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services said Monday, following dozens of water rescues in recent days.
