Vacant house fires posing risk to Rockford firefighters Firefighters put their lives on the line every time they respond to a fire, and vacant house fires pose their own set of risks. The Rockford Fire Department said that fighting fires at vacant homes puts their men at risk, which is one reason why a local woman is taking matters into her own hands. "Nobody's ever going to want to invest in this neighborhood if it's full of crappy old houses," said Lois Ginter. Ginter lives in the Orchid neighborhood on Rockford's Southeast side. "We had a number of house fires when I first moved here, like seven or eight houses within 18 months in this area here, and I'm like, ‘man, how many house fires can we have, what if all these houses start going on fire,'" she said. She mapped out each abandoned or condemned home around her and took her concerns to the city. WTVO-TV ABC 17 ROCKFORD City of Herrin to fully fund police, fire pensions ahead of state's deadline Cities across the State of Illinois are required to have their pensions for fire and police 90 percent funded by 2040. This comes after legislation was passed in 2021 to reduce pension debts One southern Illinois city is years ahead of this, and said they'll be 100 percent funded by April 2022. "It's positive all the way around, it's favorable to the taxpayer, it's also favorable to our personnel," Herrin Mayor Steve Frattini said. In addition to the salary and health care benefits, those personnel on the Herrin City Police and Fire Departments are also guaranteed a pension. While taxpayers pick up the majority of those pensions, it's still not enough to cover the shortfall in retirement. That's why Fratinni said the city entered into a pension obligations bond program. KFVS-TV CBS 12 CAPE GIRARDEAU Project Fire Buddies ignites hope for Chicago area children with critical illnesses Project Fire Buddies is an organization of first responders dedicated to supporting Chicago-area families with critically ill children. "When you see these kids go through this treatment and have the fight of their life, I mean they are the true heroes," said Kurt DeGroot, the founder and CEO of Project Fire Buddies. The organization, which began at the Oak Forest Fire Department, is a chaptered group of first responders who visit severely ill children in their communities, bringing joy and comfort during difficult times. "Project Fire Buddies is a way for firefighters to create relationships and support with children battling pediatric cancer and other critical illnesses," DeGroot said. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Peoria office building suffers damages after fire The Lexington Hills apartment office building is suffering major damages after a fire broke out just after 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2022. The Peoria Fire Department was called to 3433 W Oakcrest Dr. for reports of a structure fire. Peoria Battalion Chief, Lore Baxter, said upon arrival, the back half of the office was fully engulfed, however, none was inside. The office was closed at the time of the fire. Baxter said six crews arrived at the scene and contained the fire. Baxter also said maintenance was on scene shortly after the fire broke out. "We received a call of a structure on fire arrived at the scene, the back half of the building was fully engulfed. The building suffered major damage at the root of the building," said Baxter. This fire is still under investigation. The estimated damage sits at approximately $100,000. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Firefighters battle 3-alarm blaze at vacant building in New York Firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze overnight in the Bronx. The FDNY said the flames broke out early Tuesday morning on East 165th Street between Prospect and Union avenues in Morrisania. As CBS2's Elijah Westbrook reported, the fire appears to be out, but it sparked a three-alarm response. Video showed the flames and smoke billowing out from the roof of the building. FDNY officials believe the building was vacant, and no injuries were reported. "We had heavy fire at a three-story building, this is a vacant building. Units were met with fire throughout. We had an initial attack, but we had to pull everybody out due to stability issues with the building," Deputy Chief Brian Shovlin told Westbrook. "The weather conditions did contribute slightly, the icing conditions." The Red Cross is on scene to help anyone who may be displaced. WCBS-TV CBS 2 NEW YORK Firefighters in some Maine communities working shorter weeks under new union contracts Maine fire departments are moving toward shorter workweeks for first responders under new union contracts. Orono and Old Town are two of five communities where firefighters recently have approved contracts that reduce their workweek from the traditional 56 hours to 42. The reduction is part of an effort to create better work-life balance for first responders and attract new firefighters to the field, according to the Professional Firefighters of Maine union. The change comes amid a struggle across Maine and nationally to recruit qualified firefighters and retain current staff. While firefighters in Orono, Old Town, York, Waterville and Gardiner will work — or are already working — shorter weeks under their new contracts, they won't take a pay cut because their hourly rates will change accordingly, according to Ronnie Green, a retired Bangor firefighter who is 4th district vice president for the firefighters' union. BANGOR DAILY NEWS - METERED SITE Monday marked the 43rd anniversary of Three Mile Island nuclear accident in Pennsylvania VIDEOS: Monday marked the 43rd anniversary of the accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, the nation's worst nuclear accident. A combination of human error and malfunctioning controls resulted in a partial meltdown of the Unit 2 reactor and caused tens of thousands of Central Pennsylvania residents to be evacuated or to flee the area for several days in 1979. Unit 2 never was reopened and has been placed in monitored storage until the Unit 1 reactor is closed and decommissioned. In 2017, Exelon announced preliminary plans to close the facility unless a buyer was found; after no sale was reached, Unit 1 was officially shut down in December of 2019. Decommissioning is expected to last until 2079. "My involvement really stems from having to bury two 30-year-old firefighters from cancer," said Jason Burns of the Fall River Fire Department. "Cancer has always been a part of our job, we get it. But something changed. Why are we now burying 30-year-olds? It used to be 50-, 60-, 70-year-olds that got cancer. Something changed and to me, it changed when they started pumping our gear full of these PFAS chemicals. You're seeing guys getting cancer younger, and the cancer is more aggressive." The firefighters took part in three tests. The first was intended to measure the overall level of PFAS in their blood, and see how it compares to that of national averages. THE INQUIRER AND MIRROR FDA OKs another Pfizer, Moderna COVID booster for 50 and up U.S. regulators on Tuesday authorized another COVID-19 booster for people age 50 and older, a step to offer extra protection for the most vulnerable in case the coronavirus rebounds. The Food and Drug Administration's decision opens a fourth dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines to that age group at least four months after their previous booster. Until now, the FDA had cleared fourth doses only for people 12 and older who have severely weakened immune systems. The agency said this especially fragile group also can get an additional booster, a fifth shot. The latest expansion, regardless of people's health, allows an extra shot to millions more Americans — and the question is whether everyone who's eligible should rush out and get it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to weigh in. KDAF-TV FOX 4 KANSAS CITY PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
