Urbana mayor appoints new fire chief and deputy fire chief Mayor Diane Marlin intends to appoint Kent "Demond" Dade to serve as the next Fire Chief for the Urbana Fire Department. Dade currently serves as the Deputy Fire Chief for the City of Urbana since 2021. He will take over the duties of current Fire Chief Charles Lauss, who retires on May 5. Dade was previously with the city of Quincy Fire Department for more than 20 years, where he was promoted to Deputy Chief of Administration in 2019. He has also been an instructor at the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) for the past four years and is an Illinois Firefighting Medal of Honor Committee member, which is a position appointed by the Governor of Illinois. "I am humbled and excited to accept the appointment as the Chief of the Urbana Fire Department. It is a great honor to assume this role and navigate the divergent change that challenges all fire departments. It's very gratifying to serve a group of individuals that share a distinct commitment to confront and settle any adversity," Dade said. WICS/WRSP-TV ABC 20 SPRINGFIELD People asked to shine a light in honor of firefighters for 'International Firefighters' Day' People are being asked to turn on the red light this week to show support for firefighters. Wednesday marks International Firefighters' Day. As part of the recognition, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is asking people, businesses and fire departments across the world to light up with red. People can share their displays on social media with the tag #Shine4Firefighters. "The day is a chance to pause and say thanks to those who make up the worldwide firefighting ranks, from career firefighters to ... volunteer firefighters," the foundation said in a statement. "Those who volunteer can come from all walks of life. They could be your banker, Little League coach, teacher, mechanic or neighbor. MY JOURNAL COURIER Peoria Fire Department upgrades North Peoria fire station's life saving capabilities The Peoria Fire Department upgraded medical services from basic life support (BLS) to advanced life support (ALS) to the North Peoria area on Monday. Engine 15, located at Station 15 on Detweiller Drive, will now have a paramedic on board with every call. "When we upgrade from BLS and ALS, what that does is it adds a paramedic to that apparatus, and then it expands their capabilities as a firefighter and what they can do," said Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger. Sollberger said the process to upgrade to ALS started back in the 1990s. Engine 15 is the 11th out of 12 fire stations in Peoria to be upgraded. "The collective work over a long period of time with the City of Peoria leadership, four former fire administrations, Advanced Medical Transport, and our courier EMS office has gotten us where we are today," said Sollberger. WJZ-TV CBS 13 BALTIMORE Pennsylvania leads nation in home fire deaths Pennsylvania had more deadly house fires than any other state last year, and it may be on its way to claiming that sad distinction again. And yet many people continue to ignore or neglect the simple tool that could save their lives. The smoke detector. At least 73 people have died in fires across the state this year, according to data compiled by the U.S. Fire Administration. More than a dozen victims have been under the age of 18, including two Hellertown girls killed March 31 as flames engulfed their home. That blaze came a little more than a month after a Monroe County fire killed a Bethlehem Area School District teacher and her four grandchildren, and four months after a fire in Quakertown that killed a father and two sons on Christmas Day. "It's not just an uptick of fires we're seeing, but an uptick of severe fires with fatalities," Allentown fire Capt. John Christopher said. WILLIAMSPORT SUN-GAZETTE - METERED SITE Remembering a Hero: First responders, groups react to fallen West Virginia firefighter PHOTOS: There is an outpouring of sorrow on social media from first responders and their organizations for a Braxton County firefighter hailed as a hero after losing his life during a water rescue attempt. John Dean Forbush, 24, a four-year veteran of the Gassaway Volunteer Fire Department, died Sunday after emergency crews said a vehicle carrying Latonya Bell, 42, and her daughter, Havana Pipkins, 8, both from Cleveland, Ohio, plunged into the water. The Braxton County Sheriff's Office said Bell's vehicle accelerated before the crash, and the mother and daughter died as the result of a murder-suicide. Across social media, both nationally and locally, Forbush is being remembered for his sacrifice in the line of duty. "John Dean Forbush died trying to save a mother and child who were in a car that crashed into the Elk River in West, Virginia," a Facebook post from VFC Strong, a reality-based TV show about volunteer firefighters. WCHS-TV ABC/FOX 8 CHARLESTON All-girl firefighting squad steals the show in Arizona school district VIDEO: A unique program in a Valley school district is giving students on-the-job training and setting them up for life after graduation. While the Fire Sciences program is typically a male-driven field, a group of ladies is stealing the show. The high school students are going through the rigorous hands-on training a firefighter would do, to prepare to join a station in town. They're getting ready physically and mentally while taking some top awards while they're at it. Senior Nevaeh Hacker joined Peoria Unified School District's fire science program by accident. "When I first started the class, I had no idea what firefighters did," Hacker said. "I wasn't actually wanting to be a firefighter. I just kind of took the program to be like 'Oh yeah, it seems fun. I get out early when I can.' And then I fell in love with it." Now, Hacker is hooked. KPNX-TV NBC 12 PHOENIX Florida's Great Fire of 1901: Downtown Jacksonville burned to the ground 121 years ago today PHOTOS: 121 years ago Tuesday -- downtown Jacksonville burned to the ground. The Great Fire of 1901 destroyed 90% of downtown. To grasp the magnitude of the Great Fire of 1901, you need to understand the significance of the downtown area of Jacksonville in 1901. It was the "it" place to live and run a business. It was home to magnificent mansions, lavish hotels, and the centerpiece of entertainment. On the northside of downtown, near the corner of Union and Davis streets, was one of several businesses, the Cleveland Fiber Factory. On May 3rd, 1901, workers took their lunch break. They had laid out another large section of Spanish moss on the huge 200 foot rack that lined the outside of the wooden building to allow it to dry in the warm Florida sun. The moss was used to stuff mattresses and cushions. WJXT-TV 4 JACKSONVILLE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
