1 dead, 7 injured, including 3 firefighters, in Calumet City apartment building fire A woman was killed and seven others, including three firefighters, were injured after a fire in a Calumet City apartment building, Monday night, officials said. The fire happened in a building in the 200-block of Park Avenue. Firefighters arrived on the scene and reported heavy fire on the second floor in a unit in the rear of the building, with flames extending to the sevent floor and the roof. A woman died from injuries in the fire, officials said. Her identity has not been released. Four building residents and three firefighters were transported to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. Fire officials said the building suffered heavy fire and smoke damage. It was not immediately clear how many people were displaced by the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO 14 injured, 1 critically after boat explodes during refueling on Illinois River, LaSalle County authorities say VIDEO: Multiple people are injured after a boat exploded on the Illinois River in the southwest suburbs Saturday, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said. Conservation police, as well as state troopers, responded after reports of a boat fire on the Illinois River just before 4:30 p.m. at the Spring Brook Marina in LaSalle County, according to Illinois State Police. The incident occurred about 4:20 p.m., the IDNR said Sunday A 40-foot vessel with 17 people on board had just completed fueling. Based on interviews and a review of video footage, authorities said it appears the explosion happened from inside the vessel. Several families were on the boat, about to get ready to head out on the water when the boat exploded while they were fueling, conservation police said. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Fire erupts near Utica resort PHOTOS: A fire affected buildings next to an Illinois resort, officials said Monday. Grand Bear Resort in Utica said in a Facebook post the fire affected "a handful of cabin and villa buildings adjacent to" the resort. The fire was being contained as of after 8 p.m. Monday. Responders said the lodge, the waterpark and most cabins and villas on the resort site have not been affected. Resort officials thanked the community for their support and concern. Utica firefighters said they and all agencies in Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division 25 are involved in the response, along with divisions 15 and 17. The fire is an extra alarm response. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR Resident escapes Belvidere house fire unscathed A resident was able to evacuate during a house fire Sunday without injuries, according to the Belvidere Fire Department. Crews dispatched just after 10 a.m. to the 700 block of Whitney Blvd. for reports of a structure fire that allegedly started on the porch. The resident was evaluated for smoke inhalation but was otherwise uninjured. Firefighters were able to douse the blaze within minutes of responding. They also rescued one animal from inside the home. VIDEO: Explosions heard at Nebraska chemical fire near downtown; evacuation site set up PHOTOS: As thick black smoke visible from miles away billowed above a chemical fire in downtown Omaha on Monday night, fire officials recommended residents in the nearby area evacuate. Omaha Fire confirmed in a report Monday night that a fire broke out in an industrial building near 20th Street and Woolworth Avenue a few minutes before 7 p.m. Monday. OFD officials initially advised sheltering in place, but later sent an emergency alert out recommending those between 13th and 20th streets and Leavenworth to Martha streets evacuated because of "smoke and fire." Authorities sent an alert out around 10:30 p.m. about an evacuation site that had been set up at the Columbus Community Center, located at 1523 S. 24th St., where Red Cross was on hand to assist, Omaha Fire officials said. Fire crews initially classified it as a two-alarm fire, officially called at 7:17 p.m., according to the Omaha Fire Department report, and firefighters were able to get inside the building. KOB 4 was at the AFR Training Academy early Monday morning to get an inside look at the annual tradition and to learn more about the national hero the workout is named after. "When you're suffering, try to remember those that take care of us," said Christopher Epley, captain of training at the AFR Training Academy. "It's in remembrance of Lt. Michael P. Murphy, who was killed in 2005." Murphy was a U.S. Navy SEAL who died in the line of duty in Afghanistan. He received the military's highest decoration for his service – the Medal of Honor. Now on Memorial Day, people all over the country participate in a CrossFit workout named after the hero. "It's one mile followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats a mile, and it will take each person approximately an hour, some folks do a little bit quicker," said AFR Lt. Tom Ruiz. The 18th Annual Firefighters Memorial Ride started with a ceremony at the Cleveland Firefighters Memorial in front of the Cleveland Science Center at 10:30 a.m. Following the ceremony, the processional ride began from downtown Cleveland at the Firefighters Memorial and traveled through the following communities: Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, South Euclid, Mayfield Heights, Willoughby, Mayfield Village, Eastlake and ending at Western Reserve Harley-Davidson in Mentor with food and entertainment. WJW-TV FOX 8 CLEVELAND 165 killed in Kentucky supper club fire remembered on 45th anniversary of Tri-State tragedy May 28, 1977 is a date that may never be forgotten in the Tri-State. 165 people were killed and hundreds more were hurt in a fire at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky on that date. The famed club near Cincinnati, which was known for entertainment, was hosting a huge crowd that night. People showed up to see popular Hollywood actor and entertainer John Davidson, who was headlining the evening. Before the main act ever hit the stage, a fire broke out in the building. Many made it out, but so many were killed in the tragic fire that a makeshift morgue had to be set up nearby. The blaze dominated the headlines of the day.
